In spite of Haley Barbour’s initial happy talk (Oil? What Oil? Press Should Stop Scaring Tourists), BP Oil finally and inevitably hits the Mississippi coastline. Now he’s crying for help:
At a news conference on Monday, Mr. Barbour said "the plan we agreed to with the unified command and BP wasn’t being given the resources to be totally effective. There continues to be more oil in the (Mississippi) Sound than we have the capacity to deal with, unless we get lucky."
This is a hard picture to look at, makes my heart weep.
As of June 27, 2010, the entire gulf-facing beachfront of several barrier islands in eastern Mississippi (offshore of Pascagoula) had received a designation of at least “lightly oiled” by the interagency Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Team that is responding to the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. A few small stretches of Petit Bois Island had been labeled heavily or moderately oiled.
This high-resolution image shows Petit Bois Island (top right) and the eastern end of Horn Island (top left) on June 26. In general, oil-covered waters are silvery and cleaner waters are blue-gray. This pattern is especially consistent farther from the islands. The intensely bright patches of water directly offshore of the barrier islands, however, may be from a combination of factors, including sediment and organic material, coastal currents and surf, and oil.

Sad picture. Guess Haley is getting payback for being an idiot. They always want gov’t help when they have been railing against the gov’t for years.
Thanks for posting this, E. Really hurts when you think about it, that the pic in your post is really a zoom in of this pic from NASA’s Earth Observatory the day before. The resolution makes so much difference.
And to think the slick is only the visible part of a much larger mess in the form of a plume below.
Who you gonna believe, Haley Barbour or your lyin’ eyes?
Why anyone would want to go to Mississippi for a vacation is quite beyond me!
barbour is just following the standard repug line: slam the federal government for being incompetent when it does something wrong (from his view) and slam it for not doing enough when it does something right (proving its incompetence).
It’s really quite pretty and the coast is wonderful with great beaches.
just as with Texas, folks are pleasantly surprised to find there are ungodly beautiful places all along that coast
The truly sad thing his Barbour will probably continue to get elected due to his ability to straddle the line between complicit and incompetent. It’s called, “Blame somebody … anybody … but me!” and tends to work well for those of the Republic persuasion. *gag*
Neither Barbour or Jindal want anything to do with fixing the problem. The standard talking point for the Rs, and their talking head minions, is that the regulators are the problem and if we didn’t have regulators then everything would be peachy. Much the same as saying that if we didn’t have firemen, who sometimes fail to put out a fire, then homes would no longer be at risk.

Barbour got all kinds of press when he was touting Mississippi’s clean beaches and most referenced the possibility of his running in 2012. Will his stupidity get just as much press play or are we going to see the MSM play dumb as usual.
It is amazing the crap these politicians can spout without sufficient blow back and consequences. After watching the Press Piranhas go after Hastings for his transgressions of reporting the truth of McCrystal and Afghanistan, it is more than likely that Barbour will still be held up as a possible contender for 2012.
That is a poor choice of words. What are you going to say when all those who have lived there all there lives lose their homes because it won’t be possible to live there, or the ones in all those icky places in Louisiana, not to mention Florida, and then when everyone has to leave what will you say. What will you say when the rains bring this shit up the east coast.
Sorry but I don’t think anyone realizes just what is about to happen, and we will have to watch as our government does nothing, or the something they do, completely wrong. My country/your country is toast in its present iteration.
Obama, Bush, Clinton have all been present while our country is gutted. It is not by accident that our economy has crashed and will get much worse. You have but to observe to see it coming. I am no TB’er, no republican, or any other name, I am a human being who is in tears of frustration, while I watch fools do foolish and evil things.
A mighty fine diary, though it’s a sorry subject. Thanks Elliott – recd
4 foot storm surge possibe from Alex. A 4 foot rise in sea level, with some wind-driven spume on top of it, equals one hell of a mess, and further inland than just the beaches.
The Coast Guard, continuing it’s role as BP’s best bud, is pimping the high surf and wind as a good thing, in that it will supposedly cause the oil to break up into smaller patches and then sink and be out of sight.
Which of course, is what BP and Obama are praying for.
Oil? What oil? Oh, that’s just chocolate mousse!
I hope the Democrats in MS play Haley Barbour’s words over and over and over to the people of MS. For all the noise he has made in the past about Obama, the federal govt, spending, etc. I say “Screw Haley Barbour!!”
