I just got a fundraising email from John Tester’s campaign. Senators Baucus and Testor inviting me to a $50/head barbecue near Helena on August 8. Now Tester does some things that make me crazy, but overall, I love the guy and will give him money (again!) How many people can we organize to show up and pay $50 to publicly and pointedly tell Max – at a fundraiser he is hosting, and we pay to get into, – that the overwhelming majority of Americans that want a public option do not believe that public policy that preserves the insurance industries monopoly is in the interests of the country?

I have heard some discussion of mass number rallies for health care, but this seems to me to be one of those situations where modest numbers would, in the news coverage of the day, be huge! If 1000 progressives showed up, and others donated in a recognizable way, it would be a spectacular way to send Jon love while simultaneously smacking Max upside the head…

Anyone up for this?

I have since learned the event is at Max’s ranch.

I think there are many among us feeling the urgency of the times, and angry enough with Baucus to spend the weekend on a charter bus in order to give $50 to Jon Tester, shake his hand and say "Pleased to meet you Senator Tester, but if you’ll excuse me, I need to have a word with our host…"

If Marcy, Jane, Mike Stark, or Eve or Slinkerwink, or others chose to attend and called for mass numbers to show, we get the news cycle proportionate to how many people show. One busload of activists makes a significant national story. 50 buses, 2500 pairs of boot on the ground would likely dominate the news that weekend. 1000 buses, 50,000 people and you have the most newsworthy public event of the season…

This is doable as a weekend charter bus trip from most of the West Coast and Mountain West. I ask that the FDL and Kos notables comment, or better yet, steal my idea.

This is a war, and the other side just invited us to conduct operations on their front lawn. I think this idea is worth the effort up to at least at the level where it gives us dominance in coverage over the weekend.

I’m in $50 for Tester and $100 to defray travel costs for whatever name blogger steps up.
