The Democrats are making President Obama’s 49th birthday on Wednesday a big deal. Our society uses birthdays to define responsibility and adulthood. The Constitution provides that a person is not mature enough to be President unless he or she is 35 years old. You have to be at least 30 to serve in the U.S. Senate and at least 25 to serve in the House of Representatives. If you are 18 years old, you can vote in federal or state elections, according to the 26th Amendment, but states or Congress could make the voting age even lower.
We know the President was old enough to host a “beer” summit at the White House, and we know he sometimes sneaks a cigarette. Under the law he is old enough and mature enough to take those risks with his health and the risks to society.
How old would President Obama have to be in order to be responsible enough to smoke marijuana? 49? 35 years old? Old enough to be a Senator or a Member of Congress? Old enough to drink? Old enough to vote? Marijuana is safer than alcohol and tobacco. That is not in question. As a society, we presume that if you are 21 years old you are mature enough to use alcohol responsibly. We only punish alcohol drinkers who are actually irresponsible.
Proposition 19 is on the November 2, 2010 ballot in California. It would let adults who are 21 use marijuana and grow their own. Isn’t that reasonable? Isn’t it time to Just Say Now?
Mr. President, happy birthday. Aren’t you old enough to smoke marijuana? How old should the rest of us be to take responsibility for our marijuana use? If we are old enough to drink, aren’t we old enough to be given the responsibility to use marijuana?

Thanks and welcome to Firedoglake!
Thanks! And I believe Obama has smoked, though not legally. Maybe next year in California!
I’m a huge fan of this piece, and the fact that we have people like Eric Sterling on the advisory board of JustSayNow.com.
Bravo.
Once Obama in league with the Pete Peterson’s of the U.S. political scene have reduced the working and middle class to serfdom surely they’ll allow the peasants a little reefer madness.
Too many big campaign spenders make too much money off of the fact that marijuana is illegal. If Obama doesn’t have the guts to address something that is entirely within his purview, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, nothing is going to shame, persuade, cajole or entice Obama in doing anything to address ridiculous marijuana laws. He just got a bill on his desk doubling the penalties for brownies for crying out loud. Barack Obama: Change you can only imagine…
Good to see you here Eric. Have you been involved with the resurrected Voluntary Committee of Lawyers? They’ve got an event scheduled this Friday in SF.
Duh, you’re a moderator of that event and President of the VCL.
I’m a bit slow today.
Legal smoking in the US is problematic due to federal law and the Single Convention. Technically there isn’t legal smoking in the Netherlands due to the Single Convention.
Changing state laws is a good first step.
Hey Kris I see ya are over in the east bay, are ya interested in coming to a Meetup of Pups this 8-7 in RWC?
If you are 18 years old, you can choose to serve in the Armed Forces and be compelled to kill or be killed in the name of your country.
Surely by the time you’re 21, you can make the decision to get high.
I think Obama tried marijuana once, but he didn’t inhale.
Only Victory Gin for the Outer Party and the Proles.
Sadly, Obama is complicit in committing crimes against humanity and violating several treaties, etc. So while he had is band of marauding rape and pillagers are free to wield tremendous power as they see fit, an unimaginable number of Americans are brualized in incarceration for cannabis possession. http://gallery.marihemp.com/charts/Americans.gif
OOOhhh, we can all hope that Mr. Bipartisan has smoked some reefer. It will surely cement his cred as a transformative figure in some segments of the progressive community. Progressive community, that sounds funny.
Margaret, I don’t think it‘s made its way to or through the House yet. I haven’t read or heard anything since DiFi’s bill was announced though.
Company party this Saturday in San Ramon. :( Negative, Ghostrider. That Pattern is full.

the capitalist agenda is to have most americans working for third world wages.
have a nice day. :-)
“the capitalist agenda is to have most americans working for third world wages.” That’s if you can even find a job.
I’ve been wanting to send Michelle a note and say that I could not wish her husband Happy Birthday because I continue to find him to be as stupid, morally bankrupt and corrupt as GWB and I have absolutely no positive regard for him and his administration. Well, sometimes I say that I actually despise him and his administration, but these days I’m trying to be more charitable as a spiritual discipline by not despising people.
As for the marijuana issue, I’d be happy if the Just Say Now campaign succeeds here in California and elsewhere in the nation. But alas, it is very low on my list of priorities for things I’d like to see and would spend some time and energy on to educate myself and take some action for or against an issue.
Nevertheless, I would wish that Obama could grow in maturity and leave his childish GWB predilections far behind him, correcting his gross policies as he goes forward so that America might have some semblance of national integrity as a basis for renewed hope, not for him so much as for humankind.
blessings to all,
