Disappointed that Joe Lieberman has retained his chairmanship of the Senate Homeland Security Committee? Me too. But, could this seeming capitulation by the Senate Democratic Caucus actually be a GOOD thing? Here’s my take.
It is pretty much common knowledge at this point that Joe has long ago given up his intention of serving CT. He is serving the right wing of the Israeli government and right wing Jewish hawks, the AIPAC/Neocon/Likud contingent.
By keeping him at the Senate foreign policy oversight position Obama is sending a strong signal that the group which once ran Bush’s entire foreign policy will be placated with some sort of proximity to power, but at the same time they will be marginalized to a far less influential role than their inexorable influence over Bush — or what might have been if Lieberman was promoted to Secretary of State under John McCain.
I would have much preferred if he was rejected outright, but to me it gives clear indication that Obama is holding to his commitment of changing the tone of politics in D.C. from partisan warfare to civil discourse. And that includes placating the Jewish hawks on the right who should now be significantly more inclined to think that Obama will be a pro-Israel President than if he had banished Lieberman to the wilderness with his Neocon Republican buddies. Allaying those fears with a simple act of contrition in this instance could go a long way towards mitigating the outright assault on President Obama’s Middle East policy that we expect from the right.
And for the wonks who can distinguish between policy and politics… When it comes to domestic politics, this is another exercise of the old adage:
Keep your friends close, your enemies closer.

Spot on.
Tried to point that out a few days ago. Got leveled.
Heh. I just called the committee office and asked when they are going to publish the schedule of hearings that Joe surely had to promise to hold in order to keep his chair. After all, I said, they have a lot of making up to do since he did nothing for the last two years. The reply was that they don’t announce anything till the new session starts and that they actually were very busy and Joe was doing his job. Could have fooled me…
Dems need to shift to pro-active tactics once the new Administration takes office.
I think Reid and Pelosi accurately considered that a Bush impeachment was going to be costly at the ballot box, energizing a Republican machine that is dreadful at governing, but skilled at taking grievances of any kind and turning them into news dominating narratives.
Fine. You sandbagged the Reps and won the election.
Now stop sandbagging and do something.

I don’t see how Obama is holding his commitment to change while he requests Lieberman stay as chairman of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee. Lieberman campaigned for republicans, senatorial races and for McCain. He said he wouldn’t be part of a fillibuster for the dems. He said Obama wasn’t fit to be pres because of a lack of experience. I take that to mean the he thought Sarah Palin WAS experienced enough. Joe was defeated in the primary in Connecticut so he ran as an indy. He sopke at the repub convention against O and B. So, tell me again why he should remain chairman of hsga committee. Gah!
This presupposes an elegance, an ability to dissimulate, to hide how one governs from how one appears to govern, that seems well within Obama’s talent, but which is grossly at odds with his platform and his mundane public choices, such as Holder as AG.
If true, it will be harder to tell who really governs in an Obama administration than in George Bush’s. I don’t think that’s what many voted for, and it doesn’t seem required by the margin of popular and Congressional votes that Obama and the Democrats were given.
Lie-berman and Reid and the Democratic Senators may have wanted to frame this as an issue of retribution for Lie-berman’s campaign misconducts.
For the netroots, Lie-berman is a pattern of misconducts. A pattern of breaking his word, of obstructing the people’s interest, of lying about his supposed allies.
Pattern. To be continued….
Joe Lieberman continues to serve: HIMSELF! I feel like I’m stuck in the buffet line behind the most obese guy in the room….
