Lloyd Blankfein a few hours ago:
“Broadening the personal income-tax base by closing loopholes will generate substantial additional revenue while minimizing increases in marginal rates that could stifle risk-taking and robust growth.”
Republican Senator Boehner talked the loopholes scam a week ago and I assumed “his side’s” initial negotiating position would be President Obama’s final one, but now the money has spoken and said the same as Boehner.
So, we can be certain — markets, are you listening? — here’s how it will go down:
In the end Obama will enthusiastically extol ‘closing loopholes’ — which will take the rich and their tax attorneys five minutes to figure out how to get around — and that will be what ‘our side’ gets. No change in tax rates on the 1%. On the other hand, the 1% Democrats and Republicans will get definite and painful cuts in Medicaid and Medicare, and a perhaps smaller cut in Social Security that won’t be called a cut (it’ll be called ‘a change in the way cost of living adjustments are calculated’), but that will amount to a 3% slash after ten years, 6% after twenty, and so on.
If Romney were President I don’t think he would be able to get away with this … but he was worser evil-wise, apparently.

Enough of the “loopholes,” just raise the damn taxes already.
Cenk had a pretty good discussion on what “loopholes” and “tax reform” means. It means cutting taxes to make the economy grow. Didn’t we debunk this 20 years ago?
The biggest ‘loophole’ is where investment income — only possible for those who are rich or upper-middle-class and can afford to gamble in the Wall Street casino — is taxed half of income from actually working. But that’s intentional and open, so not considered a loophole.
“minimizing increases in marginal rates that could stifle risk-taking and robust growth.”
Looks as if we are going to get more trickle-down delusions whether we like it or not.
How’s life been going Fairleft? Good to see back here.
Over my shock that 98% of us voted for Obamney and that stupid libertarianism got almost triple the votes of Jill Stein.
Bob Somerby’s “TV liberals throw Krugman under the bus!” is instructive. No opposition will be tolerated, hear that leftists?!
okay ,now that Rmoney is relegated to the dustbin, can we impeach Obie i didnt know about Patraeus Prez?
The irony is that Krugman is actually a moderate.
Which makes him part of the “far loony left” as far as our elites are concerned…
The question is this: will Obama once again follow the misguided and self-destructive orders of our self-proclaimed betters and stomp all over the lesser classes on behalf of his masters?
… okay, you can stop laughing now… you’re frightening the neighbors…
Thanks for that link, the Nation has always been an elitist liberal entity.
Anyone who can’t see these folks appearing on Corporate TV for whom they are, well the time will come. All of ‘em on TV,from Maddow to Corn to Sharpton appearing on corporate TV are appearing on behalf of the oligarchical elites.
I quite frankly don’t watch any crap on Corporate TV and pays no attention working for big media conglomerate pretending to be liberals.
During the healthcare debate, the person selected by corporate media to stomp on progressives was Jonathan Alter of Newsweek now this time around it seems that it will be David Corn.
Ain’t that something, million dollar babies(corporate paid) telling ordinary Americans what they must accept.
I do not watch any of these political pundits, not any of them. I’m grateful for the link and transcript – somehow reading people in print lets my mind work on what they are actually saying rather than how cute they look – I think it helps.
The big loop hole that will never closed is the lack of morals loop hole. Blankfein belongs in jail along with the other Masters of Fraud.
Any MSNBC host that said anything critical of Obama got canned or are gone (Cent and Dylan)Chris Matthews is the most disappointing and I noticed the change in him during the 2010 mid terms. Money seems to be more important to these guys. Mother Jones selling out? Shame on you David Corn! Hey Chris do you have the balls to put Krugman or Bill Black on your show?
I never ever watch BigMoney tv. It’s worthless.
Sadly, it appears that David Corn of Mother Jones (who happens to be spinning like a top in her grave!) SOLD OUT a loooong time ago. Money talks…
If, as you indicate, Tweety is actually looking glum, then he gets a half a point. No love lost on my part for Tweety, but I do think he sometimes have a conscience that bothers him. Sad to say that the same cannot be applied to most of the rest of the sell-outs on MSNBC.
Obama got his “directions” from Wall ST a loooong time ago. This is nothing new. It’s just: same old, different day… which is why I didn’t vote for Barry Zero. Just saying…
Sad, isn’t it? Esp the dealio with that libertarian fraud getting way more votes than Jill Stein.
Honestly boggles the mind that Ayn Rand panty sniffers have more conviction behind their misguided beliefs – and are willing to put their votes on it – than so-called “progressives.” But there you have it.
Now we get 4 more years of this sell-out corporatist, and I guess all these “progressives” are doing a Happy Dance whilst Barry guts our Soc Sec & Medicare & continues tax cuts for the mega-rich. Yay Team! We WON!!! woot! /s
LOL!
Daily Howler is nice for that, reading instead of having to listen to. As you can see, the story is several days old. I’m a little behind on the ‘corporate liberal media’ and its right-wing antics. I hadn’t known how bad the Nation and Mother Jones (?) had gotten till I looked at Daily Howler again.
I stopped watching Chris M (and all of MSNBC) in mid 2010 when I realized that BO was a sell out (I saw it coming earlier). I voted for Jill Stein as well. I have voted 3rd party in the past but now I am committed to never voting for a candidate from the uniparty. Who knows how things will work out in the future but there is no doubt that the Frauds have won for now.
Somebody, I’m too alienated to do so just now, ought to take a good look at our vaunted Green Party and its campaign. A complete flat-lined failure, in this economy, with these two right-wing mainstream candidates, with 8% unemployment or worse for four years running, and with both parties discredited on economic management for the 99%, to get 0.35% of the vote?
By the way, the mainstream media doesn’t report the national vote %s for minor parties anymore. The only place you can find them is on Wikipedia:
Obama (Democratic) 62,613,406 votes, 50.61%
Romney (Republican) 59,140,591, 47.80%
Johnson (Libertarian) 1,211,910, 0.98%
Stein (Green) 431,710, 0.35%
Goode (Constitution) 118,272, 0.10%
Barr (Peace and Freedom) 56,349, 0.05%
Anderson (Justice) 38,747, 0.03%
Does seem like dark days for what is left of liberals and those of us on the left who still maintain our principles and didn’t give into the cult of personality.
I’m the kind of person who would be an optimist if it were honestly possible, but it ain’t. I agree.
