Tom Morello and Bruce Springstein have performed this song together many times. I believe this to be the best. As some of you (the younger of you) may not know, Tom Joad was the main protagonist in the book: The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck and the movie of the same name. The last verse is a paraphrasing of what he said to his mother as he left to avoid arrest. Enjoy, it is a great song!

Well, this is actually the last verse:
“And the highway is alive tonight
Nobody’s foolin’ nobody is to where it goes
I’m sittin’ down here in the campfire light
With the Ghost of Tom Joad.”
and I still prefer Rage’s version but it IS a great song that Bruce wrote.
Springsteen still supports Obama. He’s dead to me.
I know, I know. How can Springsteen “get it” and yet not “get it”??
you’re right, I guess I thought of the verse that begins “And the highway is alive tonight” as the chorus.
It is a mystery to me as well. It seems that someone can simply BE, regarding a narrow part of their life, such as a great athlete or artist and still have no clue in other areas. Maybe he will figure it out. Write him a letter?
You would think Morello and he have had ‘discussions’; I think it comes down to being a ‘chronicler’ versus a ‘rebel’. And Bruce is probably stuck in the ‘lesser of two evils’ mindset of the chronicler.
Would you prefer he supported Romney? Or Ron Paul?
