Gore Vidal wrote long ago that the Democrats and the Republicans are just different wings of the Corporate Party that rules America. While some of us may have suspected this all along, recent news from New York confirms that Democrats really are interchangeable with Republicans.
Steve Levy, a longtime Democrat and Democratic Suffolk County Executive left his party to run for the governorship of New York: as a Republican. The New York Times explains:
Fresh off an announcement that jolted the New York political world, Steve Levy, the Long Island Democrat who abandoned his party to run for governor as a Republican, is working to secure endorsements as he tries to gain an edge in the contest for the nomination.
…
Mr. Levy, who has developed a reputation as an outspoken fiscal conservative during his two terms as the Suffolk executive, declared himself the only candidate with enough independence to take on interest groups and labor unions, which he blamed for the state’s soaring deficits.“We face a critical juncture in the history of the great state of New York,” Mr. Levy said, as more than two dozen Republican leaders from across the state stood with him on a small stage. “Here in Albany, an alarming lack of leadership and resolve have brought us to the brink of fiscal insolvency. The people of this state are crying out for someone with a proven record as an executive manager who can balance budgets, make the tough decisions to protect taxpayers and save New York from financial ruin.”
Another source indicates that Levy essentially stands for pretty much nothing, asking voters to just believe in him:
Mr. Levy has compared himself to Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown, saying today, “You know in Massachusetts it was perceived very early on that there was going to be a coronation and he came along and said ‘hold it, not so fast… the people will decide who will represent them.’” Levy called his own candidacy a grassroots movement that goes beyond party saying, “what I’m doing is laying out my particular perspective on the recipe we need to save this state from going bankrupt and anyone who wants to join with me from any party I’ll embrace and walk with, but so far these (Republicans) are the folks who are with me. …On social issues, Levy says he is pro-choice but is against partial birth abortion and on the topic of gay rights that he is in favor of civil unions but marriage should be between a man and a woman."
Is it a wonder that politics in America has really devolved into "leadership cults" as we witness the doings of the Obamabots? The Germans had a name for this: Fuhrerprincip or the cult of the leader. It led to disaster there and will here too.
Here’s more proof that the fate of the Democratic party means nothing to these modern day Democrats because they stand for the same things the Republican party does: aid to Wall St.; bailouts to big banks; escalating wars overseas; waging war at home against average Americans; and, gay bashing. Notice that the turncoat New York Democrat is running as a fiscal conservative. Social Security "reform" will be Obama’s next, big target and sold as "fiscal reform".
Vidal was correct: Democrats and Republicans are interchangeable.

It’s called a ‘political class’; a recent phenomenon in the annals of power.
If the parties are exactly the same branch, then shouldn’t we want elections that are based on leadership and individuality? I think it’s much healthier to prefer a candidate over party affiliation. Levy is at heart a moderate, because he has strong beliefs on both sides of the political fence. He thinks for himself, unlike so many other puppets in politics. This election will be thrilling now that he’s entered the race.
