This is the language in my Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois PPO that I have through my employer.
MATERNITY SERVICE
Your benefits for Maternity Service are the same as your benefits for any other condition and are available whether you have Individual Coverage or Family Coverage.…
Your coverage also includes benefits for elective abortions if legal where performed.

Abortion is cheaper than birth for your insurer. It really makes no sense from any point of view for the Stupik amendment to go through.
Most insurance covers these services now.
I was trying to get people to look at their own employee provided health care plans.
It’s one thing to say “most plans cover it.” It’s another to look at your own coverage and realize that Bart Stupak want’s to mess with your and your family’s personal coverage.
The guys in my office (data driven reality based dudes) didn’t believe abortion was covered in our plan until I showed them the paragraph.
Then instead of being an academic issue about women’s reproductive choice, these guys who otherwise might not have gotten exercised, are feeling it a little more personally that Bart Stupak wants to mess with them.
If folks would check their own policy, they can say denfinitively to their coworkers, “hey did you know that our policy covers ….” Then even if you might not otherwise discuss abortion rights with your coworkers or whoever, in this case it’s about their own coverage that’s in the news.
I read in a Guttmacher paper that 87% of employer-offered health care plans cover elective abortions. That’s likely because it reduces the cost of the plans (Rather than “encouraging” childbirth when it is the only covered option) and also keeps female employees in their jobs. It may also reduce the need to cover maternity leaves by giving women one more affordable option.
