I have been a member for a short while, and have posted an op only a few times. I have been forced to consider the reasons for this.
It was too easy on some of those other sites. An entire op could be one or two sentences and there was no problem with that! I went over the “guidelines” for an op here, and they suggest a minimum of 100 words! Hell, I don’t even know if I know 100 words!
And then there is the dread of having ones op stand beside the other often brilliantly written ones. It is downright intimidating. I actually have to THINK and THINK SOME MORE before daring to risk comparison!
Let’s not forget the “thinking outside the box”thing. It seems nothing is “sacred” on FDL! People rip apart entire parties, besainted “progressives” and canidates without the hall monitors swooping down on them to teach them the error oftheir ways! Freedom of thought can be quite scary… There doesn’t seem to be some mainstream flow of opinion that you can settle into comfortably like a warm bath, all steamy and bubbly. All too often, diving into the op is more like the cold shock of plunging into icewater!
I post less here not because I don’t enjoy the site – quite the opposite. I come here to check in to see what is going on that the other sites won”t talk about. And I am rarely disappointed.
Thanks to all the writers at FDL for informing and incisive writing. I hope this place never goes away!

Right off the top all I could think of is this Garret Morris bit.
As for writing / not writing I’ll share what a mentor asked me when I landed an actual byline column and was shared scitless about it, “Who better than you to express your point of view?”
oh, now, lets not get full of ourselves.
This site gets out on the end of it’s own ideological branch–while sawing near the trunk, as well.
take a look at some of the comment threads. Some are a self-affirming, group-think chorus with more heat than light.
Sorry, but my only twitter activity has been with OccupyFreedomLA. So seriously, I have no clue as to what you are talking about. And my twitter account isn’t under the name I use here. So, whatever your problem is, I wish you luck with it.

I was trying to alert someone who uses the handle @firebagger on twitter. It’s odd that you would choose that handle being new here, and all.

to many of us, firebagger has become an endearing title, like yankee was intended as a perjurative when it was first introduced but the yanks loved it and went with it and made it there own, same thing for firebagger

I understand just how intimidating the idea of posting a diary can be. Over the years I’ve read FDL I’ve only written 2 or 3. Not because I don’t have anything to say, but because the writing at this site, across the board is soooo good. (That coupled with the fact that I can’t write.) That said it has been my experience that the commenters here have been fair, friendly and receptive. Good luck.

Perhaps, I am biased, but the best part of the FDL, is the Myfdl and its diaries. “Reading” the Diaries, demonstrates, that we can always do better, especially when the “unassailable” Facts are prevalent.

Well said! I always find myself going to “My FDL” first!
Just retrieved my Crown Vic after a frightening experience last night. As a snowelter, you probably know too how easy it is to forget how dangerous the cold can be. I got a friendly reminder. The “witch of January lake effect” bit me a good one where it hurts!
