From the voices of Latinos facing the injustice:
by Felipe Matos, Presente.org
In 2008, I was one of the many who hit the streets, knocked at doors and stood under the hot Florida sun to help President Obama get elected. After two and a half years, what did I get from my hard work? 1 million deportations and a total devastation of my community! President Obama is the president that has deported more people in our nation’s history –with the grand majority posing no threat to society at all.
When I turn on the TV or read the paper about Secure Communities (S-COMM), a controversial program that forces local police to share information about the immigration status of people they detain (before conviction), I cannot react any other way but to fight back. Today, Presente.org and several local organizations helped to organize a day of action against S-COMM in 6 cities across the United States (Chicago, Miami, Charlotte, Houston, Boston and Atlanta) and we delivered 35,000 signatures that were collected in just 5 days to the Obama for America’s campaign offices.
In Miami, I met Reyna, the mother of four children, whose husband was deported for driving without a license in Homestead, FL. Now, she is raising her children by herself and feeling hopeless to the fact that she can also be stopped and deported because she doesn’t have a license. Her tears are a reminder of the sense of betrayal that Latinos who voted for Obama have been feeling.
President Obama’s deportations and program such as the controversial S-COMM have alienated the support from the Latino community. 56% of the 1.2 million Latinos that voted in 2008 for Obama in Florida (a key swing state), did so because they believed in his promise for change. June polling by impreMedia/Latino Decisions found that a majority of Latino voters (53%) said they know someone who is undocumented, while 25% said they know a person or have a family member who is facing deportation or who has been deported. President Obama has only terrorized our community and separated our families through the expansion of S-COMM and deportations. He is losing our community’s support!
Cecilia Munoz, an official from the White House has said, “The President continues to work every day to fix what’s broken about our immigration system…” Yet, I still remember unmistakably, the President’s own words at this year’s NCLR conference, telling Latino communities: “We [the administration] are working everyday to make sure we are enforcing flawed laws in the most humane and best possible way.” Tell that to Reyna’s children left fatherless, or to the millions of families separated by his immigration policies. The response of the crowd at the conference and our community nationwide has been clear: “Yes, you can!” He has the power to stop our suffering through the end of S-Comm and deportations, but he chooses to push us even more into the margins. The President is the only person with the power in this country to immediately stop the enforcement of flawed laws –in fact; courageous and deliberate action in the face of injustice is the only thing that has ever given this country the real hope of change and progress.
Our families are mixed status and every year another 500,000 US citizen Latinos turn 18 in this country, becoming eligible to vote. Our commitment to continue denouncing his plot to deport our mothers, fathers and peers will not end with today’s action. This is only the beginning and I hope he understands that we are jumping off his bus unless he stops putting us on Immigration Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) buses.

Thank you for posting this wake-up call, Felipe Matos.
Does your community intend to merely cajole Obama, and then vote for him regardless of whether he hears your legitimate and desperate calls to humanity on the part of both the President and his Party, or do you intend to NOT support someone who has behaved in a fashion which is arrogant, uncaring, and downright brutal?
Essentially the question is this, when do you or your community reach the “point” where enough IS enough?
You see, Felipe, Obama’s failures are profound and cynically deep, going well beyond his treatment of your community, your people and your humanity … Obama and the Democratic Party have abused ALL of us, they show continuing disdain for the Rule of Law, for truth and for justice … across the board. They continue the endless wars which members from your community as well as members from all communities but those of the wealthy and powerful are paying for, not merely with blood and grievous injury, but with lost opportunity, lost hope, and lost trust.
This lost of TRUST is very important for it reflects a deeper truth.
Bluntly, President Obama is NOT on your “side” nor mine, nor the side of anyone who is not “astute” and clever and rich.
If you and your communnity seek to “move” such a one, with reason, with understanding, or with humanity … then you shall fail.
For Barack Obama is above such things, such consideration. Trust not his words, but look to his actions. Any man who sends drones to kill others, at his whim and decree, is not a man of conscience, or of mercy, or of heart.
If you believe and behave, knowing this truth, in the hopes that anything but money or brute power may “move” such a one, then you shall condemn yourself and your community to further disappointment and increasing despair.

Felipe was with me and Dan Choi on the Netroots Nation panel “what do you do when the President is just not into you.”
Felipe is one of the most uncompromising people I know DW. He and Juan Rodriguez, Gaby Pacheco and Carloas Roa walked from Miami to Washington through some really scary territory on behalf of Dream Activists.
What he is doing right now is absolutely the right thing to do — using the election season to press the President for change, at a time when he needs the votes of Latinos to win in 2012. There are millions of Dream Activists who are at risk of deportation. It would be self-defeating to refuse to support the President right now, rather than say “if you want our support, this is what you must do.” The lives of many, many people stand to be affected.
This is a fine post and a righteous cause. I’d gladly sign a petition demanding Obama stop being the deporter-in-chief. I’d like to see them go back to police not reporting every non-citizen they come in contact with to ICE. Just makes folks distrust the police more. Good luck to you for standing up for what you believe; that’s more than I’ve seen Obama do since he was elected. That man, Obama, it’s a freak of nature how he can talk out of both sides of his mouth at the same time like he does, how he can be on all sides of every issue. It wreaks weak, sad to say. The only thing worse is…and I hate to say this…Perry, Backmann, Ron Paul (but at least I think we really know what he believes), Romney, et al.
Thank you, Jane, for the further insight.
As you know, I agree with your last paragraph in its entirety.
However, the “change” required of Obama is NOT about simply one thing, it is about many things … and the “community” which must press, and press very HARD for these changes is the community of ALL of us, for our plight is common and universal.

Don’t ya know this is all part of O’s grand strategy? Be more Repug than the Repugs until the second term… then he can become the Great Progressive he promised us in 2008…
The measures being implemented against the undocumented are unprecendented and are actually the harbingers of an even more draconian police state than we already have…
One of my FaceBook friends is in Phoenix, knows the DREAMers, and made a comment yesterday that the Maricopa Community College District has given instructions to their staff that any students who cannot produce proof of legal residence will be reported to ICE… this on top of outrageous raises in tuition…
What can we do??? There is a fear that if Obama is primaried it may give the election to a Republican.
But there is another option – impeach Obama.
This may be the only way to get rid of Obama without replacing him with a Republican president. There will certainly be support from the right wingers. Admittedly, Obama chose a poison pill for a Vice President but I find Biden looking better all the time.
IMO Biden would have been a much better prez.
He doesn’t appear to be spineless at least.
Felipe, excellent diary!
I feel badly for the Latino community. Obama not only failed them but all of us. We should all support each other. At some point the group think has to step beyond its small borders and grasp hold of the ideas to make small groups into huge groups.
Yet Biden is quite as much “for” the monied “interests” as Obama, Twain, and has been Obama’s chief “go-between” in many of the secret dealings/bargains …
However, were Obama impeached, it might scare ole Joe into a semblence of human responsibility. Since impeachment is, to coin a phrase, “off the table” for all reasonable intents and purposes, any discussion of Biden as Chief Scalawag is moot.
(And “scalawag” is a most appropriate term …)

Citizen Felipe Matos:
Bless your heart and your courage Brother Felipe. Stand tall and don’t quit organizin’. As a veteran of the insurgency here in Wisconsin, I have long been able to maintain hope because of the emmerging Latino force in our politics especially in key regions (read Florida, Texas and California) as well as right here in Minnesota and Wisconsin, the heartland of democracy and the anus of progress.
The war on workers, the wars of occupation and the diliberate dividing of people of color against each other are goin to force this President to make some changes not just in his political rhetoric but in actions or he will be toast in 2012. And don’t fear the alternative to Obama because we will be here long after Obama is gone regardless of the out come of this next election.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THERE IS NOWHERE TO HIDE!!
“Don’t ya know this is all part of O’s grand strategy? Be more Repug than the Repugs until the second term… then he can become the Great Progressive he promised us in 2008…”
So that is his plan? He might as well run as a republican or Koch style Libertarian. Dumb plan if you ask me. Why would Dems support a repub for re-election?
This must be why he has forgotten all about the great changes to our immigration policy.
Ahhh! There will be an answer, Let It Be.
Well written.
Another piece of excrement sandwich served by this administration. These actions make no logical sense, but we left sanity a while ago.
Banksters and warcriminals go free, are rewarded for their acts and destroying the economy, destroying millions of jobs, and destroying millions of families.
So of course O … goes after “those” people. Illegal? Who cares, you’re one of “those” people. Decency? Not for “those” people. Decency and compassion are on par with communism/socialism these days.
What have I learned from all this and more shite? He’s a Repub and will do more damage to this country than even Hoover. We can vote for him till the cows come home. A second term for him will mean he will ramp this up even more. Believe your lying eyes and the mountain of evidence, or believe in more hopey changey BS.
Twain,
I’m to the point to where I think anybody would have been a better President than 0/zero. He must be saving that change to Immigration policies for his re-run show!
I’m serious. It is to be a Re-Run. I know we haven’t finished watching the first episode, but I really don’t care to see it again.
Jane:
“Support the president right now, rather than say “if you want our support, this is what you must do.” And if he doesn’t comply, then what? During the last 2-1/2 years you’ve seen exactly who and what obama is and you still have “hope?” Unbelievable!! Maybe if a republican wins the presidency in 2012, the democrats can go back to being democrats.
The propaganda, from whitehouse.gov:
President’s Vision for Reform
The President plans to create a 21st century immigration system by:
Continuing to fulfill the federal government’s responsibility to securing our borders;
Demanding accountability for businesses that break the law by undermining American workers and exploiting undocumented workers;
Strengthening our economic competiveness[sic] by creating a legal immigration system that reflects our values and diverse needs; and
Requiring responsibility from people who are living in the United States illegally.
The reality:
Under S-COMM, undocumented “criminals” who drive without a license (because they can’t get one) are put in jail and then deported. These are often men who have lived in the U.S. for many years, paid income and social security taxes, contributed to the economy, and are now gone, with their families having to go on welfare.
The President’s Vision for Reform? His vision for re-election is greater than that. Obama’s 67% share of the Latino vote in 2008 was 9% of the national vote, and he’s betting that Hispanics will have no other place to go in 2012.
from a
2002 election analysis:
An analysis of the 2002 vote clearly shows that Hispanic voters base their voting decisions on the same factors as other people. Issues like economic security, jobs and quality education for their kids are critical to determining who can capture Hispanic votes. For the vast majority of Hispanic voters, a candidate’s support for high levels of immigration and lax enforcement of laws against illegal immigration are, at best, a neutral factor.
Might Obama change? Not a chance, as DWBartoo says.
I wonder if Obama would have deported his own father?
I voted for Obama too because, as a naturalized citizen of this great country, I wanted change for the average citizen. Reyna’s husband wasnt deported just for driving with out a license. He was deported because he is in this country illegally.
There are thousands of immigrants in this country legally and there are now paths to citizenship, paths like the one I took. Since I became a citizen I vote every chance I get and also voted for the President. However, we as citizens should take our valued time and resources and fight for rights of workers who are legally in this country, who are losing union support, who are losing benefits, who are losing pensions.
If you are so supportive of latino communities, why not fight for better schools, better facilities, better job opportunities for already established latino communities that are full of legal citizens but few opportunities. There are lots of places in this country like 172nd street in the Bronx or Camden, NJ or Hialeah, Fl that are filled with latinos. And these places are not much better than the old country, buildings falling apart, corrupt and ineffectual govt, crime, unemployement. I say if you want to fight for latinos lets work to make these areas better for everyone.
Oh yeah it doesnt matter how many illegal aliens President Obama wins over, because none of them will be voting.
If Biden continued to be the President for MBNA Bank as he had been the Senator for MBNA and then the Vice President for MBNA, and he were impeached as well, would we then end up with Boehner as President?
@Broadstreetbuddy…
So you belong to the “what part of illegal do you not understand” group?
How did you gain your path to citizenship? Marriage? Luck out in the visa lottery? Come from a place with a higher immigration quota than Mexico and most Central and South American countries? Are you a Cuban who managed to make it ashore and gain automatic residence?
Your comment ignores the ugly realities of Obama/Napolitano’s draconian application of the immigration laws and the so called Secure Communities program, which most police chiefs do NOT want to have forced upon them because it makes their communities LESS safe…
Get Real… by the way, I know whereof I speak because my wife is from Mexico and we have had to deal with the “easy” path to residence that married couples face… lots of fun questions…
If Obama can’t get a “dance partner” for comprehensive immigration reform (“CIR”), there is a hell of a lot that he can do administratively to achieve many of the same results. Maybe if Republicans learn that saying no way no how would lead to implementation of policies administratively that are beyond what would have resulted from good faith political negotiation, they would change their tactic a bit. Trying to placate them through draconian and thoughtless enforcement programs sure isn’t working. The recent ICE prosecutorial discretion memos released by Morton were a step in the right direction, but were met immediately by vocal insurrection among the ICE storm troopers. If a “path to citizenship” (don’t even think of using the dreaded word, “amnesty”)is to be part of CIR, then more thoughtful and reasoned approached must be taken in the area of immigration enforcement, and that would include remedies of deferred action and temporary protected status for persons like Reyna’s husband. I remember seeing a figure for the basic cost of removal (not including detention costs) being about $55,000 as of a few years ago. That cost has risen dramatically as Congress authorizes virtual unlimited funding for additional immigration judges, immigration courts, and ICE trial attorneys (for prosecuting immigration removal matters), yet the backlog in those courts for initial calendat call hearings is two to three years, and climbing, due to the massive numbers of simple “overstays” brought before the immigration courts as a result of S-Comm. Resources expended to force the removal of Reyna’s husband were not available for the apprehension and removal of more dangerous undocumented miscreants.
No I came from the best country in South America and I had to wait 7 years just like the rules say. I am very committed to helping out my latino brothers and sisters here just as I am committed to helping out all Americans by supporting progressive policies and candidates. Which is why I did vote for the President but i wont be voting for him twice.
My point is we have a legal latino communities that desperately need help. Thats a good place to start.
Yesterday the Catholic Church in NM came out against the draconian policy goal of the current Governor (whose grandparents came illegally to the US) to strip driver’s licenses from “illegals” who are allowed to obtain them in NM.
Every once in a while the Church does something good.
It is tragic what is being done to immigrants, legal or not, in our name.
Thank you, Felipe! The US immigration system is amazingly hypocritical. We must bring all pressure to bear to reform it and protect everyone’s human and civil rights.

Interesting point and I have found that there are many Latinos who feel the way you do, that you came here legally, so should they.
The point about not voting for Obama again (which many won’t do for all kinds of reasons, not just the immigration issue) is that undocumenteds don’t vote anyway. So what Obama is doing is not going to hurt him at the polls by losing those votes. The question I have is will immigrants here legally refuse to vote for Obama over it?
Mr Obama likes to pick and choose which laws he wants to obey and which to enforce. Those that have to do with limiting his ability to conduct war and imprison people without trial, and those that have to do with financial fraud are just left to slide. Those that hurt an unpopular group for political advantage are enforced.
He who is willing to destroy a thing can control a thing. Obama has given us no reason to vote for him he is like a deadbeat abusive husband who takes our cash/votes then goes to the bar trying to pick up other women and laughing about how stupid we are for giving him our cash/votes when we know he is trying to pick up White Girls.
Jokes on you Obama the Racist White girls are not into you:)
If you were not such a pig the Lefty non racist White girls would be into you but you hate the treehugger, vegan lefty girls.
Its said we want what we can’t have but come on racists! That is why you do all these deportations you are trying to impress the racist white girls/racist voters.
Most guys date a psycho at least once and get this out of their system by their 20′s.
Grow up Obama.
We gain political power when we laugh at those who oppress us and say if we were given power we would not be like you.
We do not want to be you.
Obama is not on the side of people who ARE clever, either! Just look at his refusal to listen to our most eminent (including Nobel prizewinners) economists.
Matos, thanks for the post.
All, if you are interested in learning about or getting involved in immigration issues, I highly recommend that you check out Presente.org. The persecution of Latino immigrants over the last decade has been a diabolical clusterfuck. Recent changes at the border have forced immigrants into ever more inhospitable terrain in the Sonora Desert where perhaps as many as 10,000 have died crossing over the last ten years. You may also be interested in researching the for-profit detention facilities (largely funded at public expense) that have sprung up across the Southwest to indefinitely detain Latino immigrants, especially those who are “Other Than Mexican.”

What a country, God Bless America. This is the only country in the world that allows illegal alliens(not true immagrants) to come to this country and vote and protest and demmand their rights and get intitlements and all the other bullshit that goes with it. When a person crossed a border illegally in the other countries, you take your chances. You get caught, your history.
Booyakasha! For my money, TCU, this is the best comment you’ve ever posted.
I like to know, how they voted the last time!
Well that won’t go over well here
