Days before the UN Security council was scheduled to begin its monthly meeting Bibi Netanyahu told the Knesset, at its opening session “I want to make it clear — Israel will not take any chances for peace if it can’t defend itself,” . UN chief Ban Ki-moon supports a Palestinian proposal to reopen debate on the Goldstone report in the Human Rights Council, his spokeswoman Michele Montas said on Monday.
The report from The Raw Story:

This threat by Netanyahu, to shut down any peace process and progress presents Obama with the potential to turn the tables on Netanyahu and demand numerous concessions in exchange for a veto. Such a veto would have been routine in the previous regime. The US could abstain from voting in which case Ehud Ohmert, Ehud Barak and Tzipi Livini as well as military leaders could well be facing trial in the Hague.
How will Obama play his cards?

Netanyahu is not interested in the peace process and will sabotage it at every turn. Obama, like every other President in the last 30 years, has no intention of pushing the Israelis to do anything.
Right now the Israelis and their neighbors have a lot of latitude. But, there is also a notice up that they don’t have much time to solve this. It would be ideal if they would solve it themselves, so their own interests would be best served. Somewhere along the way that latitude disappears and the U.S. and whomever else wants to help should step in and say “You’ve failed, so now we’re going to set up Palestine and rules for relations.”
Since, more than anything, the Palestinians want access to Jerusalem I would think that has to be part of the solution regardless of who designs it. The Israelis want security and to that end they think the West Bank needs to be prosperous. That’s true, but it’s self-serving and their cup is so full they can’t hear the Palestinians.
A more ideal solution will appear over time, but it’s safe to say at this point that the Israelis would not like a solution designed by people who do not live in the Middle East and who are not Jewish.
They need to realize this NOW.
