   Here we have my oldest returning from his first semester at the university of Washington with his two college room mates from Malaysia . One a Theravada Buddhist, the other a strict Muslim , who will not be able to eat the main course ,turkey, because it is not halal, blessed by a clergyman .

   I will be driving him an hour away tomorrow to the closest mosque for prayers and look forward to the experience of accompanying him in the practice of his faith as an interloper .

   They, as well as a couple very old friends and their daughter, whom my two daughters have known since birth, will be here together with us celebrating and sharing .

   My stars, what a wonderful multicultural holiday you’ll be having. Our kids and grandkids had to cancel in the end, so we’re just going to have pumpkin pie for dinner.

   I’m envious that you’ll get to say prayers at a mosque; I’ve never been to one. I send all of you long-distance hugs and warm wishes, dear one.
