Time to move on. It may be time to admit there are no political solutions. The system is too corrupt, at all levels. The deficit/debt ceiling “debate” is just another distraction in a world where ratings agencies that engaged in criminal collusion with the banksters to crash our economy the first time, are threatening to do it again by lowering the credit score of the United States over a self-imposed limit all rational economists consider farcical. Standard & Poor’s et al. are playing god in a market-centered universe whose Prime Directive is: “All Insane Gambles Must Be Paid.” Otherwise, we’re told, investors will withhold the market lubricant, money, interest rates will rise and debt will skyrocket, putting the US and the entire world into the shoes of a homeowner whose mortgage has just reset to a higher rate – under water! All this misery because people who are too rich for their own good don’t want to take a hair cut? Who are these people, and who died and left them God? THAT is the level at which we must engage the system – where the power is. Let’s be clear; not Obama clear, really clear. This is perceived, not real, power. True, reality is largely consensual, but consensus can change quickly in times like these. True power, now as ever, is with the people, who not only manufacture all the wealth they are now threatening us with, but the very consensus on which their house of cards is built. We need to present an ultimatum, paradigm, manifesto, whatever, with the basic message: “Wealth is no good unless you can enjoy it. You are not gods, you are people. We, the vast majority of the species to which you belong, can deny you the enjoyment of your wealth. What’s it gonna be? Easy way, or hard way?

It’s gonna be the hard way.
I remember opposing Obama in 2008. My liberal acquaintances were stunned that a long-time lefty like me would be against Obama. I look like a genius now. LOL. My predictions over the years have been frighteningly accurate. I predicted Reagan’s deregulation of lenders would be a disaster (hello savings & loan debacle), I predicted Clinton’s deregulation of finance would be a disaster (hello 2008), I predicted the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq would not work (hello quagmire), I predicted the housing bubble would burst in 12 months, thanks to the great commentary of Dean Baker (hello 2008), and I predicted Obama would be a disaster. All the while, the people in my world labeled me “cynical” and a “hater” and “anti-American.” I’m tired of being right.
Oh, I forgot one: I predicted Obama’s war in Libya would be a disaster. Once again, I’m being proven correct. It’s scary because my predictions for the future are horrific and I don’t want to be right about it.
if the US goes into default that could be seen as part of the Norquist “drown it in a bathtub”, no? So, this stalemate is part and parcel of their “fuck you” to beneficiaries of progressive/liberal programs that may have disruptions in payments soon.
Jim
Ditto on that. The really big problem is, even though we have been right (as in correct) over and over, many liberals and progressives still refuse to listen to us.
Can I now put n my
DONT BLAME ME- I VOTED FOR NADER bumper sticker?
Right next to my
Lesser Evil? Still Evil. Join the NPA bumper sticker.
Oh and for the record
Do NOT forget Obama. Do NOT loose hope and drop out.
That is what the corporate powers that own the Congress and White House want.
IMPEACH George W Obama
Time to organize. Like we frigging mean it.
How many are active in NPA or October2011.org or Anonymous?
It’s out in the streets or get f#cked over by the puppets of big business. The parties are too corrupted, elections are too far in between and themselves not truly democratic. We’re on the sinking Titanic right now with the rich and their puppets in government hoarding all the life boats and stealing whatever they can from the passengers before they drown in the ocean. No time for “better Democrats” or another and another and another third party or write in. The elections are a scam and have been since the beginning of this “democracy”. Americans got f#cked in the past and are getting f#cked again, but in the past we had stronger resistance on the ground and were able to scare the puppets from giving in completely to their masters. They have no one to worry about now except those who own them.
Well don’t know about the rest, but simply great call on O.
A lot of us were fooled. I admit it, for my part it was pure willful ignorance.
It would be interesting if you wrote a diary on this. Just a thought.
“Lesser Evil? Still Evil.”
That needs to be a bumper sticker.
FDL should put that one out there.
Sadly I must agree.

The whole system is rigged.
Well, I didn’t want Hillary the War Hawk but I got her and more wars anyway. I do not believe she’d have been such a pathetic wimp.
I want one that says “I won’t eat my peas” and maybe I’ll need one that says “I won’t eat catfood”.
Whoa! I ain’t no Hillary supporter. Sorry if I gave that impression. I would have voted for Nader if he was on the ballot. I didn’t vote in 2008. I did give Nader over $2,000 in 2000 but didn’t vote in 2000! I remember in 2000 liberal friends of mine asked, “Hey Jimbo, what’s your opinion on Gore picking Lieberman?” Told them it was a HORRIBLE choice. They were stunned at me. Average liberals who don’t follow politics are not educated about their Democratic Party.
Thanks, my biggest reason for not supporting him was a foreign policy speech he gave in Chicago in 2007. The speech could have been written by any neoconservative. He advocated expanding the size of the military. It talked about how “America must lead the world” and how we Americans are “exceptional.” LMFAO! It was gross. Also, CounterPunch and Alexander Cockburn are a great source of reading the “devil’s advocacy.” Even if you think they are too radical for your senses, you should check into CounterPunch now and again. Here’s a CounterPunch article from 2008 which helped solidify my strong opposition to Obama: http://www.counterpunch.org/kafoury06242008.html
“Who are these people, and who died and left them God?”
You may think this is a little bit off the subject, but have you not heard of the Inquisition? I mean the current one that took over immediately after the last one was ended in any country. It is the judicial/police branch of the Catholic church. Their religion tells them that it okay to break all the commandments and the golden rule when dealing with unbelievers – specifically non-Catholics – because according to their game rules, on the day of judgement if there is anyone who does not believe what they do, it will keep all of them from going to heaven.
And who is the Club of Rome? Maybe you think religion has nothing to do with the concerns you have voiced, but everyone has a philosophy which can be summed up at the end of their lives, whether they ever voice it or not. Their religion is how they practice/express their philosophy. The Catholic church has a global mission.
Obama is a tool of a Global interest, not a national one. Americans tend to wear blinkers and can’t see past their national borders, but some “American” so-called “businessmen” (who are really international corporate crooks with USA passports) do their business in other countries, so you need to take that into consideration. They are ACCOUNTABLE to no one outside their own “church”.
THAT is what has to change, so that if you buy meat, you need to know THE NAME of the cow, like my mom did back in l950 (or, for those of you who are vegetarians, it would be good to only buy non- genetically modified, locally grown foods or turn your back yard and parking strip into a garden and grow your own). Then you know who to complain to if something goes wrong, and you can be influencial in correcting the problem, the system, and not just the Food and Drug Department, but the guy who grows the food.
However, most Americans have been cowed into accepting conveniences for so long they don’t know how to grow their own food and process it themselves anymore (and I admit, most of that work was done by women who tend to get tired of slavery in the name of love). What I am afraid of is that unless our leaders get serious, it could take a great upheaval, something like the series of assinations across Europe that preceeded World War One to purge the rot. A lot of innocent people could get caught in the cross fire of a bloody revolution. Think about how many Americans own guns…
“Time to organize. Like we frigging mean it.”
There is a credibility problem about organizing overtly. Any organizing effort will be immediately observed and subverted by FBI plants (like RANDY TOLLER) or whoever the secret services call themselves these days. Organizing means you need a leader and they become vulnerable to threats and corruption. Instead, a common will needs to develope, a Jung’s collective conscience sort of movement of people with an intelligently focused energy. I would hope that American creativity and individualism could survive that, but when Americans spontaneously em masse get out in the streets, lobby, and educate all at the same time, the leaders will get scared (the “God is watching” phenomonem)and suddenly develope enlightened self interest, and change will happen.
Something else, as long as I’ve got my wind up: The Arctic ice cap is disappearing, and new transport channels have opened up. Nations are already negotiating/arguing over the right to use some passages. The ice that provided a natural barrier between Russia and the Scandinavian countries and Canada is now uncovered and has revealed oil and probably mineral reserves that Canada will not be able to protect. 90% of Canada’s wealth is owned by the US (this could be updated from my information 20 years ago, but I doubt if Canada runs its own financial show in that respect) and with the recent heavy immigration into the US from Central America, and a lot of unemployed young men in America looking for a way to spend their energy, there is the possibility of Americans being involved in a conflict on Canada’s northern border. There is nothing more wasteful than electing leaders who can’t effectively communicate directly with each other. When the global snakes battle each other out of existance and eat their own tails we will need a well-honed foreign affairs department, meaning well-versed in other cultures and LANGUAGES to work well with other nations. The answer is to be prepared. I have spoken. Mark my words.
The “lesser of two evils”? STILL EVIL bumpersticker is available at http://newprogs.org/npa-store/npa-merch
If you haven’t checked out the New Progressive Alliance (NPA) (at that URL), make it a point to do so — it is my hope that this will develop into a real alternative for fed-up voters of any party.
Forget Obama? Ahhhhh if only I could. Unfortunately with the disasterous policy positions that he takes I suspect I’ll be remembering and cursing him well after 2012(much the same way I do his predecessor.)
I was another one of those Cassandras. Although my issue with him was domestic policy. I remember when he said nationalizing health care would mean making poor choose between rent and health care, when he had Austerity Foolsbee on TV talking smack about infrastructure spending, when he went campaigning with someone who publically stated gay was an illness that could be cured, when I found out he voted present on abortion for political cover, and when he praised Reagan as his “transformational” role model. I couldn’t get onboard the Obama bus, not with that many questionable actions.
I’ll not be getting on this time either. I’ll be writing someone in. TPTB can kiss my backside. Too many men and women have died for me to play the rigged game they think they have all figured out. This is one member of the electorate that won’t go down without a fight.
Do you find it interesting that the USA credit rating didn’t fall when it took on all those toxic assets during the bailout?
It will fall only now, unless we cut the social safety net. The net has become the new target for the banksters since they raided most of the juju out of the 401ks last time. And what do our illustrious protectors, the Democratic Party, do to shield the little guy? Why, they have no choice but to throw us under the bus, don’t you know.
“Average liberals who don’t follow politics are not educated about their Democratic Party.”
Ding.
Yes, that’s a keeper!
excellent and thoughtful points cbsunglass! Very telling considerations that I hope readers here take note of.

In regard to other comments: Who are we paying off? Why the Rothschilds and bankers like them. We are paying off the upper 1% that’s who.
The only hope I swear is for the majority to wake up– the 80% of the population of the USA who earn less than $100,000 a year and elect people from this group to run as independents. I think that most of those from the 20% still believe in the myth of grabbing the brass ring as evidenced by their investments in Wall Street.
If any REAL change is to happen,it must come from the 80% majority who earn less than $100,000 to lose. [And perhaps a few from the bottom part of the 20%–those who earn less than $150,000 a year because even these people are slipping into the 80% as our economy continues to melt like an ice cream cone on the street in July.
“. . .earn less than $100,000 a year and have the most to lose. . .”
“excellent and thoughtful points cbsunglass! Very telling considerations that I hope readers here take note of.”
Ditto! Good point, cbsunglass!
Would be nice if you wrote a diary on the subject.
Interesting discussion – the point of my post was direct action targeting corporate and financial power. Organizing is a start, but what is the goal, and what are the tactics? Corporate power is very vulnerable. Concerted action by an organized minority can bring about disproportionate change, as the Tea Party idiots have demonstrated. The rich are running scared, there’s a lot of “torches and pitchforks” talk already, and a slight majority of the rich already favor being taxed more. I make my own t-shirts, and wearing my “TAX THE RICH” shirt is a kick – almost everybody loves it! I like the anonymous approach, as that snowballs I think a demonstration of people power is in order. How about selecting a company we don’t like and ending it? That will get their attention better than crowing about how right we were all along. Meanwhile, we can go to Rodeo Drive or upscale malls wearing our “PITCHFORKS AND TORCHES” t-shirts. “PROFITS ARE TAXES, STUPID” gets a good reaction when I wear it. “Deficits Don’t Matter” will be relevant periodically. Plain t-shirts are about two bucks apiece, and fabric paint is all over the crafts outlets…
