* NSA WHISTLEBLOWERS: NSA COLLECTS ‘WORD FOR WORD’ EVERY DOMESTIC COMMUNICATION

Source: Washington’s Blog

Anyone Who Says the Government Only Spies On Metadata Is Sadly Mistaken

PBS interviewed NSA whistleblowers William Binney and Russell Tice this week.

Binney is the NSA’s former director of global digital data, and a 32-year NSA veteran widely regarded as a “legend” within the agency.  Tice helped the NSA spy with satellites for 20 years.

Binney and Tice confirmed that the NSA is recording every word of every phone call made within the United States:

[PBS INTERVIEWER] JUDY WOODRUFF:   Both Binney and Tice suspect that today, the NSA is doing more than just collecting metadata on calls made in the U.S. They both point to this CNN interview by former FBI counterterrorism agent Tim Clemente days after the Boston Marathon bombing. Clemente was asked if the government had a way to get the recordings of the calls between Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his wife.

TIM CLEMENTE, former FBI counterterrorism agent: On the national security side of the house, in the federal government, you know, we have assets. There are lots of assets at our disposal throughout the intelligence community and also not just domestically, but overseas. Those assets allow us to gain information, intelligence on things that we can’t use ordinarily in a criminal investigation.

All digital communications are — there’s a way to look at digital communications in the past. And I can’t go into detail of how that’s done or what’s done. But I can tell you that no digital communication is secure.

JUDY WOODRUFF:   Tice says after he saw this interview on television, he called some former workmates at the NSA.

RUSSELL TICE: Well, two months ago, I contacted some colleagues at NSA. We had a little meeting, and the question came up, was NSA collecting everything now? Because we kind of figured that was the goal all along. And the answer came back. It was, yes, they are collecting everything, contents word for word, everything of every domestic communication in this country.

JUDY WOODRUFF:   Both of you know what the government says is that we’re collecting this — we’re collecting the number of phone calls that are made, the e-mails, but we’re not listening to them.

WILLIAM BINNEY: Well, I don’t believe that for a minute. OK? […]

* HAS THE GOVERNMENT LIED ON SNOOPING?

Since Edward Snowden leaked documents detailing the NSA’s sweeping surveillance programs, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper was forced to admit that part of his congressional testimony was “erroneous.” Here are six claims about NSA surveillance that have been undermined by recent disclosures.

* ‘EVERY STROKE YOU TYPE’: GREENWALD REVEALS XKEYSCORE, VINDICATING SNOWDEN

By Juan Cole, InformedComment

When Edward Snowden went public, he alleged that as a low-level analyst, he could see you type your emails in real time:

“I, sitting at my desk . . .” could . . . “wiretap anyone, from you or your accountant, to a federal judge or even the president, if I had a personal email”.”

Snowden was repeatedly called a liar by Washington DC insiders like Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI) and Rep. Peter King (R-NY), who denied that Americans’ emails are being collected or examined by the NSA. Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald charges that Rogers, whose political campaigns receive contributions from security-linked firms, is simply lying through his teeth to the American people.

Glenn Greenwald now reveals the exact software program about which Snowden was speaking, called Xkeyscore.

Greenwald writes:

“Training materials for XKeyscore detail how analysts can use it and other systems to mine enormous agency databases by filling in a simple on-screen form giving only a broad justification for the search. The request is not reviewed by a court or any NSA personnel before it is processed.

XKeyscore, the documents boast, is the NSA’s “widest reaching” system developing intelligence from computer networks – what the agency calls Digital Network Intelligence (DNI). One presentation claims the program covers “nearly everything a typical user does on the internet”, including the content of emails, websites visited and searches, as well as their metadata.

Analysts can also use XKeyscore and other NSA systems to obtain ongoing “real-time” interception of an individual’s internet activity.” […]

* MOZILLA FURIOUS AS DISGUISED SYPWARE USED AGAINST PRO-DEMOCRACY ACTIVISTS

By Jennifer O’Mahony, TelegraphUK

Internet firm Mozilla has demanded a British surveillance software company stop using its browser as a front for governments to collect data covertly from citizens. (image: Citizen Lab)

Developed by Hampshire-based Gamma International, software known as ‘Finfisher’ was installed unknowingly by users in at least 36 countries, misrepresenting itself as a programme named Firefox.exe, identical to the programme name of the Firefox internet browser.

Finfisher can grab stills of computer screens, record keystrokes and Skype chats, and remotely switch on cameras to film users at work, but does not infect the broswer itself.

Mozilla announced yesterday it had sent a cease and desist letter to Gamma International, “demanding that these illegal practices stop immediately” and referring to the use of Firefox’s brand and trademarks to trick users into downloading Finfisher as “abuse”.

A report released by the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab research centre claims that Finfisher servers in 36 countries are monitoring citizens’ internet usage, including those located in Pakistan, the UAE, Bahrain and Qatar, all of which are headed by governments routinely condemned for their human rights records.
