Initiative 502 is insufficient and has so many loop holes it still allows the government to WASTE our tax dollars. For instance there is no way to test for marijuana on the fly if someone is driving BECAUSE it stays in your system for up to 30 days, there fore there WILL BE several false arrests resulting in law suits just costing the tax payers more and more money. Second the money that is raised by the taxes need to go into EDUCATION, not drug education, but EDUCATION IN GENERAL!, Those taxes need to go where it can do the most good, and helping stir up new propaganda for the government isn’t one of them! I’m sorry these two things alone are enough for me to say NO to I-502 and I AM! Yes, I want it legalized, but we have waited far too long for justice to have limitations put upon it. GIVE US JUSTICE!

There are any number of problems with I-502, not the least of which are the practically unworkable DUI provision. That said, the people writing these legalization initiatives seem preternaturally disposed to write stupid into them. I suspect the language was crafted by the small group of deep pocketed supporters who actually aren’t too bright and nobody involved wanted to point out the obvious stupid for fear of alienating them. Why can’t a resident grow a few plants in the yard like anyone of legal age can make their own beer or wine for personal consumption?
All that said, I want far more to see this thin edge of the wedge breaking open the hermetic seal of the debate into the mainstream than I care about the shortcomings in the initiative itself. I’ll be voting yes without any second thoughts whatever. The good far outweighs the bad here. You really can’t expect the first successful iteration of the concept to be anything like perfect.
