Bmaz has written a great post about the coming right wing war against Eric Holder for AG. She cites how Rove has already rallied the troops and they are preparing for some grand old party style pearl clutching.
Bmaz and Looseheadprop have been leading the way in recognizing the risks that Holder is not quite the Attorney General we need to solve the simple problem of restoring the rule of law. It’s not like the lack of the rule of law lends great credence to the argument (made presciently from Paul Rosenberg at Open Left) that America is a failed state or anything…
Anyways, if Rove is to win this battle (what, democrats folding, I don’t believe it)…wouldn’t it open a gigantic opportunity for Obama to permanently end the Blago connections and general "corrupt Chicago politician" talk for the rest of his administration with a Fitzgerald appointment?
Other massive political assets this move would hold include:
1. It would be a message to our CIA agents in the field that he has their backs, and Obama could argue that this is the way a president really "supports our troops".
2. It would reignite the memory that it is the Republicans so corrupt that they committed what even George H.W. Bush defined as treason.
3. It is EXACTLY the kind of bipartisanship with the sort of Republicans who act in good faith that democrats should be engaging in.
4. It opens the door to explain how the Bush administration has been anything but tough on terror as evidenced by how they outed a CIA agent actively working to prevent WMD proliferation in the Gulf for political ends.
5. It opens the door to explain the domestic propaganda campaign that had engulfed the American people in regards to WMD in Iraq—which would compound his message of why he never bought the argument for war in the first place about a million fold.
And, perhaps most importantly:
6. IT SENDS A SIREN CALL ACROSS THE VILLAGE THAT SHILLING FOR THE REPUBLICANS IN WAYS THAT ALMOST GET CIA AGENTS KILLED IS NO LONGER ACCEPTABLE! Bringing the Valerie Plame story back with all the grizzly details about media complicity would be a permanent trump card to any beltway insider who was in on it. Any establishment figure involved in the defense of Scooter Libby—any—would permanently have their license to criticize Obama’s patriotism removed. If not, Obama could end their political or media career by spelling out the grizzly details of their complicity.
This post has so far been about the political benefits to Obama for making such a move. However, the results for the country would be even more incredible. Wouldn’t AG Fitzgerald press conferences be cathartic enough to actually convince our country (including bloggers like ourselves) that we truly have nothing to fear but fear itself?
There is not a person in the country that has more of a working knowledge about how the GOP media industrial complex works–and the damage it can cause–than this man. He knows it from the inside in ways patriots like ourselves could only dream.
With the post at AG and a proven track record of demanding accountability REGARDLESS OF PARTY, who knows what this hero of a prosecutor could do!So…if the democrats, like usual, capitulate on this one, it might just not be so bad.
After all, doesn’t Obama want to spend his political capital elsewhere, and shouldn’t he be enticed to open the floodgates of political capital by appointing this man to AG instead?

Thanks for the diary. FWIW, I’m pretty sure that bmaz is a guy.
I have tremendous respect for what Fitz accomplished in investigating Rove and Libby. When a lot of his peers caved, he stood firm.
Since the Libby conviction, however, a lot has surfaced about his positions on rendition and torture. I think Fitz would be an improvement over Holder, but I think we could do a lot better.
Whoops, sorry about the gender confusion Bmaz!
And thanks for the comment BooRadley. I did not know that Fitz held such views on rendition and torture…that certainly is a big impediment to this conception. As you said though, he would be an improvement over Holder, although we certainly would not want to be pushing for an AG torture enabler.
However, even if there are better choices than Fitz, I doubt there is one that the blogosphere could make an impact as much as with him. With the blast of Blago talk from the talking heads they probably would be receptive to discussing the heroics of Fitzgerald. If a push for him as AG only increases his air time and brings back the Libby discussion it might be worth it. It would certainly be a big help to Obama to remind the nation what whole other level of corruption the GOP has been playing at lately—-especially in comparison to whatever atrocities they claim Obama committed with his senate seat replacement debate.
Erm
Actually, a Fitzgerald appointment could (possibly correctly) be viewed as a kick upstairs, distracting him from the important work he is doing in IL.
If not Attorney General, I believe there is also an opening for special prosecutor, regarding some of George and Dick’s shenanigans.
Isn’t the Valerie Plame case still technically open? The cloud still hangs over the Vice President, and the post-Blago media and the Republican congress these days seem much less inclined to protect the Bush administration.
It has been a long time since we have heard from Plame or her husbnad. Both were ardent Hillary supporters during the primaries, and Wilson wrote a series of scathing articles about Obama in the Huffington Post. Here’s hoping Obama is willing to work hard to get back into their good graces by insuring there is justice!
Ahem, maybe they should be working to get into Obama’s good graces, not the other way around?
And why not support Fitz for AG if the Rovian tactics succeed in taking Holder down. Just what Rove needs…Fitz with a budget and a mandate.
There are few in this country who have exhibited their patriotism as explicitly as Wilson and Plame. Yes, you are right that they should be working to get into Obama’s good graces as well. However, if our country is going to address the truth of her outing and the general propaganda campaign they are amongst the very few with such credibility that it might even stifle the village.
In general, I think they need to work together. The worst possible thing would be for them to leave the public eye, and although there were signs they would have been active in a Clinton administration I have yet to hear/see anything about an Obama administration.
On this we agree. But mindful that they have a young family to raise, one hopes they’ll at least, with a new administration, be able to fully tell their story in public without the censorship of partisans controlling the CIA.
History deserves no less.
Was what Fitzgerald did by speaking to the press ethical or did it compromise the right to a fair trial?

John Edwards should be the Attorney General. He’s earned it for his advocacy for people over profits. Whereas Holder has been a shill for corporations. Holder has no record of public advocacy, Edwards does.
I hope someone on this blog agrees with me.
We in the blogosphere deserve an appt. and it looks frightening like it’s not going to be in Interior (see top recommended diary Daily Kos for more).
