Last night OPD raided Oscar Grant Plaza again, bringing at least 17 cruisers and 40 to 50 cops in riot gear. I am still trying to get the details but this is what I know so far:
12 to 14 arrests were made; our NLG attorney says that all but two of those people are apparently being charged with obstruction. Two have more serious charges, at least one involving possession. On OakFoSho/Spencer’s video above, one of them yells out that the police have planted ecstacy on him. These two people – both African-American men who have been arrested previously at OO – are a couple of the more visible and outspoken occupiers and clearly were targeted. None of us who have spent hours and hours with them over the past three months has ever seen them using drugs. I find this incredibly suspicious.
The person you see on the KTVU video below is another regular who says that he just showed up with his camera and thus had not been doing whatever illegal thing the occupiers before had supposedly been doing. He is arrested in short order even though he says he was following police instructions to move back.

According to a Facebook account from one of the occupiers of the Interfaith tent:
Police in riot gear advanced and gave no order to disperse, no warning and no explanation of what was happening.
People were told to move or be arrested.
The two African-American men I mentioned above had crossed the street but police went after them anyway.
An OO attorney appeared on the scene and those who had not been kidnapped attempted to march with her to the jail to find out about those who had been, but were met by a line of riot police.
Once they finally made it to the jail, they were denied entrance and shuffled back and forth from the police station to the jail when they attempted to find out why their comrades had been arrested. The attorney attempting to represent these clients was also given the run-around.
We are planning to Occupy City Hall today at 2 PM and demand the release of these political prisoners and the restoration of our rights to assemble at the plaza.
Stay tuned. Also, hopefully I have corrected all my typos – trying to post this in too big of a hurry – or perhaps in too much of an outrage. Deep breath.

Update: the two African-American men I referenced above have been charged now – one with one felony and other with two felonies (I believe those are in addition to misdemeanor obstruction).
Eight other people have misdemeanor obstruction charges; another has one additional misdemeanor charge; and another has an additional felony charge.
The raid is the police state in action. Infuriating.
Thanks, for the update HFC.
In a “he said, she said” situation like this, I would never take the police’s word at face value. Sad, isn’t it?
You can bet the FBI is busy at Occupys all over the country, trying to recruit vulnerable people into one of the DOJ’s manufactured terrorist plots.
It’s kind of astonishing (not to mention chilling) to watch this play out. One thing they are getting away with is keeping people for several nights in jail and then not charging them with anything. I’m sure that’s illegal but the punishment has already happened for the victim. All of this seems intended to intimidate us and deplete our bail funds – in addition, of course, to keeping us from being able to exercise our rights.
Chilling is a very appropriate description.
The exact tactics you describe are being used in cities all over the country. You can bet that DHS is providing coordination and support services. Speaking of the word chilling, I’ll bet their seminars are chilling to those of us worried about the rise of the police state.
Thanks for the continuing updates, hotflashcarol.
It is sad, indeed, that we can’t trust the police NOT to plant drugs on us.
Yup. And these felony charges really up the ante. These two young men have put themselves on the front lines of this revolution and it really saddens me to see the prison-industrial complex snatch them up so fast and so mercilessly. It is very eye-opening to be among a group of people hollering at the police and see who they choose to arrest. Shockingly, it has not been us middle-aged white ladies. But I have no doubt they will come for us eventually.

In case anybody feels moved to complain about this…
Hey hotflashcarol,
Thanks for the post, OO is located at Fascist Central apparently. Hope your attorneys are up to the challenge of the faux felonies, time to earn their combat medals in the movement so to speak.
Rec’d.

“But I have no doubt they will come for us eventually.”
Well, that’s chillilng, and kinda profound, carol. Shades of the old Martin Niemöller poem:
“First they came for the communists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.”
Oakland does seem to be the epicenter of the resistance. My stars; stay safe.
Just returned from City Hall, where We the People were locked out. Three emissaries from the Interfaith Tent were allowed entrance to the building that apparently no longer belongs to the citizens of Oakland. These three got to meet with Arturo Sanchez – who is not the Mayor or the City Manager, but their designated hitter. They have not yet emerged.
A Facebook Posting from one of our attorneys, Laleh:
Occupy Oakland has been the victim of almost daily raids by the police in the last two weeks. Dozens of us have been arrested and detained for days – only to have the flimsy charges eventually dropped. When raid after raid results in prolonged detentions and dropped charges – that’s not law enforcement, it’s police terrorizing nonviolent protestors.
Last night 12 more people were arrested, all of whom are still sitting in jail. Please call the numbers below to demand their immediate release. They take our tents, our umbrellas, and our blankets – but we cannot allow them to come back night after night and take our loved ones. Please call.

I called Quan; hard to say what was up. Message said to press the # sign any time to leave a message, so I did, but there was no hint that I wasn’t talking to dead air. Same thing after first waiting through five messages in six languages or something. I was, lol, very passionate, given that I prolly… will not be heard, even by some lowly staffer with a clipboard.
Gave it a try, sweetie. ;o(
Thank you so very much for participating in our waning democracy. I pity the fool who has to transcribe these messages for Queen Quan, who won’t even talk to the press today. They have a basement or a bat cave or something so she probably made it out alive, even though protestors were banging at all the doors of her castle when I left. I will probably make some calls myself tonight; I am too tired to go out again.
