Generational: Promises that have a life of their own
Of my ever-expanding list of favorite writers, Linda Valdez writes for the highly conservative-oriented newspaper, the Arizona Republic, continues apace with her latest opinion column, located on Page B-10 [Viewpoints] and that being yesterday, or Sunday, while titled, “Arizona’s subdued rainbow is about to bloom in full color.” And she points “el dedo” or the finger of blame and neglect onto Arizona’s leaders. To wit, she says the following:
“In a state where the median age of native-born Latinos is 18, paying attention to the needs and interests of Latino kids should be a top priority. They are the future. The median age of non-Latino whites in Arizona is 44; for non-Latino blacks, it’s 31. The numbers come from the Pew Hispanic Center.
“Yet instead of leaders who nurtured the talents of young Latinos, Arizona got the four horsemen of the anti-immigrant apocalypse: former state Sen. Russell Pearce, Gov. Jan Brewer, Attorney General Tom Horne and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. All Republicans.
“Instead of celebrating a marvelous cultural heritage, Arizona outlawed bilingual education, criminalized undocumented workers, institutionalized racial profiling, denigrated Mexican American students as gangsters, banned ethnic studies and made it official state policy to harass the undocumented—many of whom are mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, cousins and classmates of Arizona’s young, U.S.-born Latino residents.”
With regard to the 160,000 new and now registered Latino voters since the election cycle of 2008, and as of this past Thursday, 34,320 Latino voter applications and who were registered during these past several weeks, were submitted for acceptance to the Secretary of State’s Office. And all this was accomplished by Promise Arizona and which has been funded primarily by the service-workers union, Unite Here, and thusly, Promise Arizona, recruited and documented over 1,000 volunteers with the majority being students.
Of course, my long-time friend of these many years, Petra Falcon, from my times at Glendale Community College and Arizona State University, our wealth of demonstrated MECHA experiences and combined successes, was put to good use, and as such, Petra, and her army of volunteers, has been tantamount to much hard work and of an exemplary success for our community-wide civic engagement.
And needless to say, but I will, she and her volunteers are well-deserving of our support and recognition. Congratulations!

Highly recommended, ese.
I notice that you all are even pulling Obamavato into contention, surely as an unforeseen by-product of activism.
When is the last time Arizona went democratic in a presidential election?
1864?
Q: What do you get when you mix Green with Brown?
A. Your bong.
donkeytale,
Thanks for your responses.
In the past few days, the State’s attorney general has filed their appeal with the SCOTUS, challenging the 9th’s decision to uphold the local federal court, when it comes to Arizona’s voter ID Law. The Republican argument holds that “illegal aliens” are voting in our local and statewide elections since federal law does not require birth certificates be utilized to register to vote. As such, this two track approach to voting, and in particular, federal law should not supercede Arizona law, consequently, tossing out the federal voting process, is not necessary. However, without any miminal evidence that “illegal aliens” are voting, what is left for the Republicans to argue other than “voter protection or voter suppression” and this litmus test for Common Sense will require the SCOTUS to ‘explain’ their rationale, and which should be at odds with the delight of the instutionalized bigots and racists.
In any event, SCOTUS is expected to ‘hear’ this case sometime in February of next year.

Registering more Latino/Latina voters is excellent news, jaango. I hope that at least on a state level, more votes for Dems translates into better government for now. Wish the federal D’s had something to offer.
Thank you for the report.
Such an insensitive and shortsighted response, Wendy.
Tu no sabes, Gringa.
Many latinos, especially the young who are children of illegal aliens, don’t share your older white middle class progressive’s unconcern regarding whomever wins the POTUS election makes no difference. Maybe it doesn’t to you.
But the GOP taking over the executive branch isn’t necessarily a “no loss/no gain” on immigration rights. Remember, the Executive branch enforces immigration law. And Obama’s executive order for the modified DREAM Act will likely be repealed by Romney.
But thanks for condescending so sweetly…
Yes, and no one is going to be hassling you at the polls either, are they, Vieja?
That would be the Federal Court protecting those rights as Jaango mentions and it flies right over your head.
Aye yi yi.
Do you really believe the Justice dept under a GOP POTUS would sue Az, Utah and Alabama over their heinous anti-immigration laws. Wendy? Would Mitt Romney sue Sheriff Arpaio?
No difference, my donkey…
Sorry Jaango.
Out.
Oh, yes, Donkey. And it was *such* a diligent lawsuit they shut it down. And how long did they hem and haw and allow Arpaio to hold all the cards with impunity?
“On Friday night, Oct. 31, in another in a chain of Closed Probes, Ann Scheel issued a news release on behalf of US Attorney John Leonardo saying that after an ‘exhaustive’ four-year investigation of Maricopa County, AZ’s “America’s Favorite Sheriff” and cronies, there won’t be any indictments. The release was skimpy on details, but in a letter to County Attorney Bill Montgomery, Scheel mentioned several allegations that had been investigated: civil-rights violations, misuse of public money, and perjury.
She said prosecution had been declined because of a lack of evidence or an insurmountable burden of proof.”
Oh, yes, the modified Dream Act was a significant gift from O’s campaign, but…not the one he promised.
Party hack away, though, Donkey. But the ‘Vieja’ was lovely…and true, to boot.
C’mon, donkeytale.
Lighten up on our Good Friend, wendydavis, and albeit, an excellent “companera” of high repute to have on your side.
Therefore, tread lightly!

all my best,

The most true part, since you have zero idea what you actually said to a Spanish speaker.
I also wanted to say that I’d hoped that this President would support Jeese Jackson’s minimum wage to $10/hour bill, and not deport far more undocumented aliens than Bush ever did, and call for an end to the cradle-to-prison drug war by decriminalizing MJ; and to call for a jobs stimulus bill to aid the many disproportionately jobless black and brown people; to end the Race to the Bottom school privatizations that will, again, affect poor and lower middle class, no matter what color, and many other things he promised while campaigning, but failed to do.
And @ kelly canfield: I won’t dignify that with a response.
Unnecessary and totally uncalled for.
Yer smug trumps yer heart.
Not kewl.
Now you are bullying, using slurs.
Not kewl.
Yer flagged.
Right on, good to see you wade in on that.
Appreciate the update, added voters from the Latino population is a good thing for your burgs, and for the state, and for the nation.
Highly Rcc’d.
As if I care what you think.
You still have zero idea of what you expressed in your faux spanish compared to what a Spanish reader will read.
The FAIL is strong in you. Cope. Or not.
Yikes. Now I wish I’d tried faux Yaqui for jaango instead. ;o)
Wendy,
I thank you for your expressed thoughts and intentions, despite Google. As such, Google, is not all that important, to my way of thinking. As to Yaqui, your humor is well-noted here.
Jaango
;o)
my best always,

lol… I’m sure their eyes turned into saucers, and the part about the registration of voters probably caused them to reach for their nitroglycerin.
@donkeytale still working your vile race baiting angle for the democratic party are you?
One must now call into question your fake reportorial skills as well as your fake Spanish, Wendy. You see, you may not know this, since your exposure to the legal system is undoubtedly far less than either those nobelwomen Stein and Honkala, who apparently sat shackled alone in jail for 8 hours (where were all their supporters? RIOTOUS!) but a criminal probe and a lawsuit are two different legal actions.
Besides, you never did address my point: which is The GOP has undertaken heinous, ongoing civil rights actions in Arizona and other states while a vital and fast-growing (unlike the Green Party) movement of chicanos and native Americans in Arizona are fighting back and receiving material support from the Obama Administration and the Federal courts in the form of criminal investigations, lawsuits and favourable rulings against the voter ID laws and other GOP engendered voter obstruction targeted at minourity voters in particular.
For you to then dismiss these actions at the federal level as making “no difference” to chicanos is simply not true, as well as a condescending dismissal of the chicano movement in Arizona which is successfully organizing under the banner of the Democratic Party and offering internet fakes an example of true activism against real civil rights violations.
Linky thingie to the actual facts as not reported by Wendy Davis.
Please point out specifically in this thread where I am “race baiting” and then describe in your own words how what I said is “race baiting.”
Calling out the persistent racial/ethnic insensitivity that is at the base of the white third party progressive non-movement is not race baiting.
Its the truth.
Deal with it.
Sorry, Jaango. I promise to remove myself from your threads hereafter.
