Via John Tirman, Executive Director of MIT’s Center for International Studies:
We are now able to estimate the number of Iraqis who have died in the war instigated by the Bush administration. Looking at the empirical evidence of Bush’s war legacy will put his claims of victory in perspective.
…
The overall figures are stunning: 4.5 million displaced, 1-2 million widows, 5 million orphans, about 1 million dead — in one way or another, affecting nearly one in two Iraqis.
Victory indeed.
What’s on your mind tonight?

1 million Iraqis equals about 330 times the deaths on 9-11. This travesty is perhaps the most egregious blind spot in our nation.
Especially seeing as Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11
I wonder how many Afghanistanis we’ve killed.
That figure is largely still being written…
This is why myself, and millions of other people demonstrated against this war before it started.
Anyone could see that this would be the result.
But some authority will just say “we don’t agree with this” and that’ll be the end of it.
Onwards and upwards in Afghanistan.
It’s clear that Bush saw himself as some sort of Messiah figure spreading free markets and democracy around the world – and that Cheney and others used him to accomplish their more sinister goals.
I’m starting to think that Obama is more of a pragmatist when it comes to war. He has a strong domestic agenda to push, and he’ll do internationally whatever gains him the popularity to do what he wants to at home. He opposed Iraq during the election because he knew that it would please the left. He suppoerted and has now escalated in Afghanistan because that pleases moderates and conservatives. I hope this isn’t the case – it’s inhuman to play politics with millions of human lives – but I’m starting to wonder.
that’s not clear to me, to me he saw himself as the faciliator to the theft of the treasure of nations, I believe no such higher goal then greed in this depraved individual
Nah, he’s not that self-aware.
that’s a great stat, I wish it had the profilactic;
shut down the “he had to protect us agaisnt terrorism” meme
