Six months ago, myself, Alex Thurston, and others here at The Seminal joined with Robert Greenwald and Leighton Woodhouse and others at Brave New Foundation to create the Afghanistan Blogger Fellowship.
Blogging is hard, and it’s usually unpaid. But we wanted to change that, because we felt Afghanistan too important an issue to go uncovered. The fellowship was designed to promote a blogger who was passionately against escalating the war in Afghanistan. If they brought their research, intelligence, and rhetorical skill to bear fighting against escalation of this meaningless war, then we would bring that blogger traffic and influence to get the message out.
We chose as our first fellow an unknown blogger from Austin, TX by the name of Derrick Crowe. Derrick was smart and he had a knack for research. He was also a religious Christian, and brought his background of faith to the anti-war message, creating a potent argument. Over the course of six months, Derrick has transformed himself into a leading voice against escalation in Afghanistan, regularly appearing throughout the blogosphere and in the mainstream media. And, as he’s just announced here, he’s now working full time on the issue with Brave New Films.
We’re sorry to lose our blogger fellow, but thanks to the generosity of people here, on other friendly sites like Crooks and Liars and Down with Tyranny, and our friends at CREDO mobile, we have raised the funding we need to continue the fellowship for another year. We just need a blogger.
Do you want to get paid to write about Afghanistan? Are you against the war and looking to help find a way out? Are you a blogger who needs an audience? If so, apply for our fellowship!

Let me just say that this was a fantastic experience and a great way to get involved on the issue. It will bring you into contact with some great people and give you a great platform. Apply already!
Is it possible to ask Malalai Joya to do it? She’s the most famous Afghani voice that I know of (in fact she’s the ONLY Afghani voice I know of), she went on a recent Code Pink promoted book tour (http://authors.simonandschuster.com/Malalai-Joya/49986851/author_appearances), I heard her on Amy Goodman’s Democracy Now– my impression is that she has a firehose LOT to say and just needs outlets to get it said and understood. I admit I had a hard time getting through her accent and fast speech rate, but I don’t expect I’d have any trouble at all reading her. I hope there’s some way she could be invited in to FDL.

Malalai is a great voice, no doubt. I’ll see if I can ask.
Very very cool. Good luck to all those anti-COINdinistas who are putting pen to paper.
Derrick,
Congratulations and thank you for all your contributions and thoughtful responses to commenters on your posts. Looking forward to your future efforts at Brave New Films!
Jason,
This is a wonderful way to support new voices in the blogosphere. The combined efforts to raise funds for a fellowship is a generous gift to the readership here at Seminal/FDL.
Thank you.
Thanks klynn! If you know anyone who should apply (or want to apply yourself), please do!
I’ve just applied…! ;-)
Application received, thanks!
Good luck CT!
You people are awesome!
nemesis grants?
When my cellphone contract is up in a few months, I’m switching to Credo Mobile.
I don’t think I should apply.
Because I have only one simple thing to say.
Get the fuck out. Now.
And thanks Derrick and everyone.
Unfortunately, I don’t have the required strong moral stance against fighting in Afghanistan. My objections are practical.
We’ll take that, too!
jason,
I sent your call to bloggers along to my friend who writes for a local column. Thanks.
If you ever need any antiwar graphics I am still painting for the peace vigils. You can see the work here: You need Safari or firefox to download the photos:

I am working on a painting about the drones entitled: “Baby killers, Inc.” I am not finished with it yet, but when I am I will put it up on the web gallery.
Good luck y’all.
here’s some inspiration for you.

Horrific and sad and not at all inspiring. I have not been able to paint very many pictures because I am only able to hold so much at a time. You read me 180 degrees wrongly. That’s okay. That happens alot.
Thanks for passing it along, and thanks for that link. Awesome stuff!
How do you get $$ from CREDO??
Love you guys, did not see you on the ballot choices.
Since I’ve read a thousand blog posts on this site since it began, I chastise you for not letting me know how to “pick you” in the Credo list of non-profit things.
??? maybe if I go looking for it.. I would find it.
Amy Goodman got the money you woulda shared.
We worked out a more temporary arrangement with CREDO, so yeah, we weren’t on that list. But they were most generous in helping with this important work.

they’ll buy out your contract….
Please get someone who actually knows about Central Asian history and culture!
If you know anyone good, please show them this post.
Obama made a terrible decision when he sent in those 30,000 troops into Afghanistan. He had two choices: go in, or pull out, and in a situation like that, you CANNOT choose “BOTH!”
So he has sent troops in there to be slaughtered – a sacrifice to please both sides.
pu-leeze get a grip. sent to be slaughtered?
Here’s a piece I wrote about low level leverage points in Afghanistan that may be of interest
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/12/4/192157/751
Gotta read this one later, but I did a click through on one of your links there to another of your diaries about Three Cups of Tea. You should put that one on your resume here too:

I would totally be interested in reading blogs about the interface of Afghanistan and America, where they try to teach or we try to learn things like that, instead of the story always being about us trying to force our ways on weaker countries. I keep thinking we are behaving like such idiots, and it would actually be quite compelling to read a real conversation between Afghanis and Americans. This is all such tragedy, but…it could even be sitcom, really. Does anyone remember the movie The Russians Are Coming The Russians Are Coming? So perfect. Hey, I hear NBC needs to fill five hours of 10-11pm prime time a week…
And here’s another piece I wrote about Badshah Khan and a nonviolent Islamic army in the Northwest Frontier Provinces of what is now Pakistan. It was probably the first non-violent army in the world and based upon Islamic principles and Pashtun tradition:
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/6/27/23370/2751
ding ding ding!!!!
The once and future perfect army — nonviolence is strength — would you be able to write current blogs that incorporate that idea? Is it lost to the Afghanistan/Muslim people or still something they think of, even cherish? Why was it outlawed, when they threatened no one? They could teach US. I hope you write your blogs anyway whether you’re the chosen blogger or not.
Really a great diary, thanks for posting.
Here’s a thought:
I blog. I sometimes blog about Afghanistan. I compose music. I’m now writing a large set of pieces for orchestra about Afghanistan. Two of the four pieces are complete in their first drafts. I’m furiously working on the last two, because we start rehearsing the set with the Anchorage Civic Orchestra at the end of next month. The work premieres in Anchorage on May 15th.
I wonder if they’re interested in somebody blogging about writing music about Afghanistan.
Very interesting, ET. We’re actually toying with the idea of starting a cultural series here at The Seminal. Can you drop me an email at seminal@theseminal.com?
I don’t understand. You have Attackerman right here at FDL already. why not just give the money to him?
Well, being as how Spencer supports fighting over there, he may not be the best guy for the gig.
He’s also a full time, paid journalist already.
and judging solely by his output, he’s pretty damn busy.
but if you hire somebody such as Tuttle, Spencer might be a good person for him to ask about finding sources of info.
The blogosphere doesn’t much need another voice that’s “passionately against escalating the war,” however intelligent and persuasive. Much more, we need voices offering constructive, specific, proactive ideas on how to end the war and get out.
The media and the blogosphere are already rife with criticism. We need people who really know what they’re talking about to articulate and propagate vision(s) of the *ideal state*; to make concrete proposals that are compelling enough to go viral.
We’re looking for someone who can do both, for sure.
