What a great interview, Jbade, thanks for posting. I especially like the way, about 22 minutes in, the interviewer starts talking over Greenwald and trying to back him into a corner and Greenwald essentially says, “Look, asshole, stop talking over me and let me answer your question or I’ll take this mike off and I’m outa here.” The interviewer backed off. Classic GG.
The interviewer, for the most part, did a good job, though — he was skeptical and challenging, which is the job of a journalistic interviewer.
A sad thing for me about the interview was Greenwald’s all-too-true remarks about Bob Woodward, a man I used to idolize. He said he would be alarmed if Woodward had approved of what he’d done in the Snowden case, and that Woodward is now one of the richest journalists in the world, a status he attained by leaking secret government information in order to burnish the reputations of high government officials.
Specifically, he called Woodward a government mouthpiece. Bullseye.
This is a great Thanksgiving present; again, I appreciate your posting it.
agreed, the real problem here is the interviewer would never, has never used the journalistic skills he uses on glen on any part of the establishments chosen narrative
in that sense he is a blatant propagandist, challenging the messenger but never the message
Interviewer: I like the state to look up my arsehole. Why don’t you?
Gotta disagree a bit, there.
The skepticism and challenging would have been great if the subject was the information in the documents GG has. Sadly, the interview was entirely lacking substance on the leaks and instead went for ad hominem attacks to discredit GG himself. This interview employed standard, transparent psyops techniques and was quite an embarrassment, IMO.
Thanks. Very entertaining.
I caught most of this live and am happy to see this video posted. I was sorry that Glenn didn’t quote James Clapper when the interviewer said in amazement that Glenn couldn’t really believe that these top government officials lied to the people. Remember Clapper’s “I gave the least untruthful answer”? – and he was speaking to Congress, those responsible for oversight!
and subject to prosecution for having lied to Congress (by his own admission). So just imagine how little compunction he would have lying to voters for, you know, our own good (as he determines what our own good is).
Then again, who am I kidding? They don’t prosecute their own, unless they have some independent political reason, like cleansing the House of lefties or some such.
I take it that HARDtalk took its title from Matthews’ Hardball?
Its wiki says that its original host was provocative, getting the show some good ratings. However, the show was recently moved to a later time slot, now beginning at 12:30 am. That background may help us understand why the current host seems like a bit of an arse.
The interview could have been worse. However, very early on it was apparent that Greenwald was choosing his words very carefully in explaining why he decided to publish, while the host of HARDtalk kept trying to make Greenwald sound like a fool by putting words into Greenwald’s mouth.
Example: Greenwald very carefully explained his decision to publish, adverting to citizen skepticism when government is secretive, whereupon the host responded with something like, “So, your default position is not to trust anything that government says?”
A less intelligent, less measured man than Greenwald might have been led down a garden path by those tactics. All that actually happened was that Greenwald came off as careful, competent and intelligent; and the Hardtalk host came off as less intelligent, less competent and a lot more desperate and clownish.
BTW, kudos to the title of the thread.
To be balanced would, the interviewer also interview Clapper and Alexander?
I believe the interviewer behaved like an establishment tool, but I’m prejudiced. He could gain my trust with an equally conformational interview with the Clapper and Alexander.
That would have been the coup de grace.
“Glenn Greenwald Roasts a “Turkey” For Thanksgiving-”
First of all, thanks for that hilarious headline.
I love the English, had a lot of fun there many times and almost married one.
But this is at least the 2nd time that one of these wanker Brit journalists has sat there and acted as if they were dealing with just another tongue-tied American simpleton. You’d think they’d get the idea that this was a different animal, that he had chewed up limey stool pigeons before and perhaps a bit of caution and careful preparation would be in order. But nope. In they strut, cocksure of a quick walkover.
And then Glenn does his thing and I feel like playing some John Phillip Sousa.
What. A. Great. Post.
