I see a bunch of right-wingers -and a few veal pen “pwogwessives” (as the late Alexander Cockburn dubbed them)- gloating over Chavez’s death. It’s easy to see why:
Chavez didn’t invade other countries. This alone made him Not Serious.
When dozens of countries volunteered to help Bush’s henchmen kidnap, torture and “disappear” turr-ists, Chavez not only refused but led the effort to convince other Latin American countries not to cooperate with the Cornpone Torquemada and his thugs. Very Serious leaders should always be at the beck and call of the White House -or at least, the CIA.
In 2004 Chavez stopped sending Venezuelan officers to Fort Benning for “training”, so they could no longer be taught the fine arts of torture, murder and overthrowing lawfully elected governments. Worse still, he encouraged other countries to do likewise. This is very Un-Serious: Where else can military officers learn to rape and kill nuns, then force local peasants at gunpoint to dump the bodies in a shallow grave?
Chavez didn’t assassinate people for writing nasty things on the internet, nor did he have someone’s 16-year-old son killed. Worse yet, he never used “double-tap” attacks designed by Very Very Serious People to kill first responders because if there’s anything more vile and Un-Serious than being the 16-year-old son of a man who writes mean things on a website, it’s someone trying to give first aid to the mortally wounded 16-year-old son of a guy who writes mean things on a website.
If only Chavez had waged illegal wars, tortured, raped, kidnapped and murdered whomever Washington wanted, when Washington wanted…
The Village would have loved him.

Indeed … Be like Bush and Obama and like what Bush/Obama did/do to who Bush/Obama did/do it to how Bush/Obama did/do it.
Be a Pentagon/CIA “good buddy” and by all means buy USA weapons with USA “aid” money to impose what the WH and DEA wants you to be doing and help kill/do the killing WAshingtonDC has decided you need to be doing to show “political/economic loyalty” to WH,Langley and Wall St.
Always kowtow and jump to Bush/Obama GWOT “plan(s)” with a “How high!?” and not “How come?” , “Why should I?” and do not say “No.”

You make some very good points, but you are forgetting a very big, very salient point for why the 1% HATES ON Chavez: Chavez had the temerity to – shriek! gasp! moan! – nationalize the Venezuelan Oil industry, make sure that his country & citizens benefited from this by improving their educational standards (much higher now that Team USA Fuck YEAH!!), improved health care, improved standard of living, etc.
Why the very idea! How DARE Chavez not kowtow to & give away Venezuela’s Black Gold to the Big Seven???? Chavez coulda been egregiously RICH, had he done so, but his citizens woulda suffered… which woulda been the point.
Instead, we are LIED TO about what a huge sucking “Dictator” Chavez allegedly was. No, while Chavez had his flaws (who doesn’t), Chavez had the NERVE to promote something more akin to Democracy – shriek! gasp! shudder! – in his country. How DARE he do that??? Commie! Dictator! Fascist!
Meanwil, now Chavez is dead, the CIA is busy trying to revers all that nasty socialism (and let Big Oil) take control of Venezuela’s oil.

Clearly that’s a major factor, but the seething hatred for Chavez goes far beyond the poor taste he showed by having his country on top of “our” oil. If Venezuela’s oil disappeared tomorrow, few people outside that country would care.
What galls neocons and war whores is that he thumbed his nose at the empire and more importantly, set an example for others in South America to follow -which they did. They’d hate his guts just the same if Venezuela didn’t have oil or precious minerals.
