On September 14, a fight broke out on a school bus headed to Belleville West High School in Belleville, Illinois. An early statement from local police suggested that the fight may have been racially motivated. A white male student was punched repeatedly by two black male students.
Police quickly recanted the claim of racial motivation:
"No evidence is present to suggest that the motive for the conduct was the race of the victim," Haida said, referring to the possibility of a hate crime. "Illinois law requires such evidence in order to support that charge. Illinois law is clear that the fact that a defendant and victim are of different races is insufficient without more evidence to support a hate crime charge."
This same article interviews the first student to throw punches. Here is his story of what happened, where he is referred to as the fourteen year old:
The ninth grader said the older student entered the bus and walked to the rear area and told the 14-year-old to move his books, and when he didn’t, the 17-year-old pushed them to the floor.
"He told me to move my stuff, and then he pushed my stuff on the floor and sat down. I told him to pick up my books and he didn’t say anything. He elbowed me, so I pushed him back. He pushed me again and then I started hitting him," said the youth, who has been suspended from school for 10 days. He receives his school assignments at home.
The video marked "Bus fight: full version" at this same website confirms the story of the fourteen year old. As the older student sits down, his arm appears to sweep something off the seat and the two begin shoving one another immediately.
Even though at least five minutes elapse between the two sets of punches being thrown, irresponsible reports in the right wing media have fanned this incident into a racial crisis. Here is the fourteen year old, again from the same story:
The 14-year-old said that what he later saw on Fox News was an edited version of the videotape that made it seem like there was one continuous fight.
"They pumped it up and they made it seem like something it wasn’t. They made it more than it really is," he said.
I searched Fox News and I found several links to video they produced, but none were functional. Here is a compilation by Comcast that includes a video that may well be the edited clip seen by the fourteen year old. The video does put the two sets of punches next to one another, but, amidst the outrage, the anchor does mention that there is a five minute gap between the two sets of punches.
Drudge then picked up the story, and as reported by Raw Story, blared the headline "White Student Beaten on School Bus; Crowd Cheers".
Not to be outdone, Rush Limbaugh then jumped into the fray, and, according to MediaMatters, said:
It’s Obama’s America, is it not? Obama’s America — white kids getting beat up on school buses now. I mean, you put your kids on a school bus, you expect safety, but in Obama’s America, the white kids now get beat up with the black kids cheering.
It should come as no surprise then, that we learn this morning that a white supremacist rally is now planned for Belleville:
The protest has been promoted on several supremacist Web sites, including the National Socialist Movement and Stormfront.org.
The event is "to protest the racial double standard with hate crimes. If it had been white kids doing the beating they would have been charged with a hate crime," stated a link on Stormfront.org, which boasts the slogan "White pride world wide."
On the National Socialist Movement Web site, Cpl. Jason Bonn writes, "People in this town are rightfully angry at the double standard that we know how this would be working if the races were reversed."
A counter protest is planned:
In response, the Rev. John Curry, of Conqueror’s Christian Center in Belleville, is organizing a silent peace rally across the street. Those participating expect to hold signs that say, "We love you," and, "No more us and them."
It should be reiterated that both the police and another student who was on the bus have stated that the attacks were not racially motivated:
D’Vante Lott, 16, said he was on the bus and witnessed the attack by the two black students.
The victim walked onto the bus, looking for an open seat, but students kept turning him down, as D’Vante said happened often with this student.
But Monday, the victim apparently tired of asking for a seat, D’Vante said, moved one student’s book-bag off a seat, and just sat down.
The student next to him then started hitting the victim for moving his bag, D’Vante said.
But the second assailant was just trying to act tough, D’Vante said. "The second guy hit him because he wanted to hit him," he said.
D’Vante didn’t think the attacks were racially motivated.
"Nobody even knows the kid," D’Vante said. "He’s a quiet dude."
Let us all hope that Saturday in Belleville is peaceful. Any violence that takes place, however, can be laid directly at the feet of Drudge, Limbaugh, Fox News, Stormfront and the rest of the radical right. Limbaugh deserves a double dose of responsibility for any violence from his effort to link this incident to Obama, adding more fuel to the racist hate of Obama seen in Beck’s 9/12 rally.

Good post Jim. It’s amazing and more than a little frightening how willing the radicals are to fan incidents like this into way more than they are. The limited and categorical “remorse” that was expressed by O’Reilly and others when Dr. Tiller was murdered, and the smirks that accompanied them, say everything that needs to be said about their “culture of life”.
Thanks, Pedinska. Yes, the level of violence with this hatred is really growing. You are right to mention Tiller, and then we also may have the story of the Kentucky census worker (although what really happened here is not yet clear). “Culture of life”, indeed.
Fox News and Limbaugh aren’t interested in just a white supremacist rally…they want a ‘race war.
It is beginning to look that way, isn’t it?
There isnt going to be a race war, the fat man dosent know how marginal he and the degenerate, lumpen-right really are. If (when) there’s a breakout, it will be a class conflict with the reactionary forces trying to settle their twisted, colonial age, race fantasies. I think limbutts dreamed of American operation barbarossa would end for them they way it ended for the nazis – anihalation.
EW has a most interesting post on that census worker story. This one definately bears watching, as the right tries to construct a new reality around a relatively common event.
Yes, the discussion thread at EW is very informative.
This is so bad that it has caused some conservatives to call Limbaugh out. Here is a good example, where Rod Dreher in unambigous language says exactly what Limbaugh’s conduct on this issue amounts to:“This is evil.”

Thanks for the timeline of the videos, Jim. Your version makes a lot more sense.
My sense, strictly from observation, is that, in general, kids today care a whole lot less about race than previous generations. Now, class may be another story.
Precisely. From what I could see on the video, it didn’t look to me like there was de facto segregation on the bus; the kids looked quite intermingled. Sadly though, with the attention and stirring from the radicals, these kids now are forced to think of this event, and perhaps even much of their future school exeriences, in a racial manner.
Best explanation yet, Jim. Thanks.
How much more will beck’s, hannity’s and limbaugh’s be allowed to spew before they are stopped? Does limbaugh have to call for the death of Pres. Obama before he is made to resign?
And how will Fox stop them? It will look like censorship to the crazies.
They are allowing the craziness to escalate and it will explode in a major way. Of course, they will take no responsibility for the death and destruction.
Enough is enough!
It is high time that Democrats hit back at Republicans, especially at wackos like limbaugh and beck. Good article pointing out the holes and sheer lack of logic and common sense.
I’m sure those “We Love You” signs will have a real positive effect on Nazis. I’m surprised that no one thought of that as they were being loaded onto cattle cars headed east back in 1942. Heck, a few more “We Love You” signs and everything would have been fine.
There are people you can reason with and people you can’t reason with. People opposed to this should certainly come out in force and make sure they take photos of every Nazi in that rally. Would make for a good online database of nuts.
If the anger is ever going to de-escalate, someone has to take the first step. In small, midwestern towns everyone knows everyone and they tend to identify one another in part by which church they attend. If the signs cause even one person to feel a bit of remorse when they see a friend who waved one of the signs at them when they encounter each other again at the grocery store or church in the next few days, it will be worth it.
Now, as for those who will travel far out of their way to spread hate there, you may well have a good point.
Recommended.
…Lord of the Flies…bus driver is just another of them, grown older.
Jim, in case you didn’t catch this check it out as it addresses both race and class dynamics.
Great post, now if can only get CMM momentum.
How do we keep our kids safe from hate radio?
So, let me get this straight: After complaining about the “Socialist” policies of the current administration, all it takes to get the right-wingers to follow the “National Socialist Movement” is have a couple black kids beat up a white kid. The cognitive dissidence is palpable.
Jim,
Here’s another piece from Huffington Post that is relevant to your post.
First paragraph:
The writer recognizes that such over-the-top reactions only come from those who feel they are losing ground.
I hope you’re right, Karen. Had we a different media, I’d be quite happy about these revealing developments. But we don’t.
That’s true, CH, but as in so many other things, the public is often ahead of the Legacy Media. Race is only one example. I think the writer recognized (and I hope she’s right!) that the losers are those who become so desperate.
I sure hope that’s true, because otherwise that list of events suggests that things are going the wrong way. I honestly don’t know which alternative to believe.
I think Cheney’s term for it was “last throes,” but I don’t really believe in last throes anymore, not after that crew came back from the politically dead after Watergate and Nixon.
However… things do ebb and flow, and in that process changes do happen, even if so very slowly. For example, we actually elected a black president last year. I really wasn’t sure I’d see that event in my lifetime, but it happened.
That does not mean that I don’t expect to see more of these violent events. There will probably be more of them. Until someone with the proper platform makes another plea for some simple decency. And then, just as the use of more overt racist language became socially and politically unacceptable, the guilty parties will realize that their presence now is no longer acceptable in polite company. (And that their street theater has begun to look like something out of “Lord of the Flies.”)
And I always remind myself of what Molly Ivins said about this topic… that when you realized your parents had lied to you about race, you wondered what else they had lied to you about. She was born of two die-hard Republicans, and was raised in Texas… and look how well she turned out!
And, I was born (in the 1950s) of two parents who were both raised in southern families, but because my father had enlisted in a then-integrated Air Force, racism was never really part of my life. I saw it later, but by then it didn’t matter.
I’m concerned about the kid that no one would give a seat to and no one knew much about as he was pretty quiet. He could use some help before he breaks wide open.
Yes, it crossed my mind to wonder whether he was the type who evntually breaks very violently. However, once actual punches started being thrown, he seemed to just cover up and do nothing to protect himself. It seemed like dumping the book bag and elbowing his way onto the seat was as violent as he wanted to get, so he could indeed just be a quiet kid.
Given the intense attention the episode has had, it sounds like some counseling would be good for all the kids who were there.
Welcome back… to the 1960’s
The following is a summation of Frank Luntz’ “American Dream”:
