In China today, AFP quotes President Obama:
"I am a big supporter of non-censorship," Obama said
Oh? Really? Here is the Washington Post on May 14 of this year:
"The publication of these photos would not add any additional benefit to our understanding of what was carried out in the past by a small number of individuals," Obama said yesterday.
Barack Obama: fighting censorship over there so we don’t have to over here. Any questions?

No question that his words and his actions are often not in sync.
Every time he (or any other US leader) punches the hypocracy button, he loses.
I heard that same story, Jim, and had an identical reaction: “Oh, really?!”

Recommended. Thanks, Jim. There’s a name for this abnormality: cognitive d___. Somebody help me out here, only had one cup of coffee. What’s that second word? In layman’s terms it’s: “You can’t believe a word he says.”
cognitive dissonance
He doesn’t even understand the hypocrisy of his statements.
[Enjoy your coffee!]
Thanks, Jim. Caffeine immunity seems to be setting in – hope it’s temporary. *g*
For Obama it especially doesn’t pay to look back, especially to something he himself said. He’s going to snow those Chinese whose ancestors were professional manipulators long before the Western Hemisphere was discovered??? He can no longer snow even this one old lady.
“There is a Chinese proverb: “Consider the past, and you shall know the future.” ”
I guess he doesn’t want to know the future ’cause he isn’t looking back..’g’.

Jim, this article goes right along with your diary here. There is a picture that must accompany the diary and I still don’t know how to do that.
transfer cases (coffins);
dignified transfer (ceremony);
and the bell-ringer: Overseas Contingency Operation (war in Afghanistan).

Russ Kick of the Memory Hole obtained 360 pictures through a FOIA. No copyright attached so they can be used.

More like cognitive pissonit.
Even if you do have the appropriate neurons to see the discrepancies, they will never bother with hiding or changing what they do that causes it, because we have a “kinder, gentler” form of censorship, dyk.
It will be interesting when the China Press catches this post Jim White. Imagine, receiving pressure to release the torture photos from China?
The decision not to publish the photos was made with the thought it might save lives…American lives. I think that was justified.
I do not believe it is all that different from censoring someone from yelling “fire” in a crowded room.
And in the process it contributed to folks in Muslim countries believing that no US person will ever face prosecution for torture–leading to more terrorist recruitment–leading to more deaths. Thanks.
Jim, as you know Afghanistan borders Uzbekistan. CIA was in Uzbek before the invasion of Afghan.. CIA was giving questions to the Uzbek ‘Security’ Force for their ‘interrogators’ to torture answers out of Muslim captives. On an earlier thread JohnfromSacramento gave us this link to the most horrible pictures and article that I, at least, ever need to see.
Here is the link to my earlier diary on Uzbekistan and the clip of the interview with Craig Murray, former Brit ambassador to Uzbekistan 08/2002-mid 2004. He knew and associated with most of the CIA men involved.
There are video clips of Craig Murray testifying before a Hearing in Parliament about these horrors and the fact that Britain had used info gleaned from such torture. Following his testimony the same panel had Philippe Sands testify regarding the legal issues involved. Seemed to me that the panelists disregarded the main issue, that Britain had accepted the fruits of torture, and were only concerned as to whether that acceptance and use reached the crime of complicity or encouragement of the crime of torture, since they did not actually participate in the act of torture itself. [It appeared to me that Sands was pretty disgusted with the shallowness of the panelists - just my perspective.]
I’ll get links if anyone is interested.
My point is that hiding these horror pictures only keeps some Americans in the dark when the rest of the world knows what is going on. Hiding the pictures is only to protect the guilty from prosecution, i.e., Bush, Cheney, Rummy, Dir of CIA, and all those who got us entangled in these crimes of torture. I wonder if there is any citizen of Central Asia and the Mid-East who has not had a relative or acquaintance who has endured these crimes? They are neither ignorant of nor unaffected by these abominable assaults.
Have a look for me please. A picture instead of a video this time. Her left hand; what do you think?

Blue, I enlarged the pic. My eyes aren’t what they used to be, but: Is that really a hand? Compare it to her right hand for size and color. Her left hand is very red from above the wrist and that one middle finger is held very peculiarly. At first I thought it was an artificial hand. I can’t see that she is holding anything in it. Maybe someone with better eyes or computer skills can see what you are talking about.
Thanks for trying. It looked to me like her hand was bandaged and we are seeing the tip of one finger only. She has very long fingers for such a tiny lady. Going to have to buy a magnifying glass and then maybe I can tell for sure. It seems like it could be a tensor bandage over her whole hand.
You may be right. I wonder if she is a left-handed person? …hand damaged so she could not write? I’ll look again.
I looked at other sites (probably with a stupid search subject). Only one listed her damages: abdominal wounds, part of intestine removed, they took out one kidney (damaged? or sold?) and brain damage. Nothing about her hand. But there is something wrong in that picture. I couldn’t get it to enlarge any bigger than just once.
If her hand is damaged she could not have picked up the gun, got the safety off and fired with any speed. Not that she’d know what the safety was anyways. That’s why I want to know; I’d notify her lawyers if I knew for sure what is on her hand. The FBI released the poster of her on April 2/03. Betcha they took the picture of her with her head uncovered because she had already been kidnapped. The story of why they are looking for her is of the make believe variety.

~~~ModNote: Above link heads straight to a PDF~~~
I have pdf capabilities, so no problem. That’s an interesting link, especially for its date, 04/02/2003…sooner or later the Israelis enter the picture. FBI’s never going to fess up to anything and whatever she says will be attributed to her brain damage. BTW, how did she get that?
They keep finding excuses for delaying the trial – how many times now? Now it’s Jan. I figure she won’t live to be tried, then (like Ivins) the story will fade and she along with her children will be forgotten along with the crimes of the FBI. Surely her lawyers will pursue the matter of her children.
BTW, that pic: When she and the children were captured the oldest boy was only 7 years old, so how is it that the boy next to her is a teen-ager if that pic was released Apr/03?? FBI can do anything with photos, as shown in the Oswald pics. [after reading the book on J. Edgar Hoover, Lane's Rush to Judgment and Piper's Final Judgment, I would never contact the FBI.] If there be such a thing as Grace, I would ask that it keep me and my loved ones out of the clutches of “Justice”…
Here is link to Craig Murray’s testimony before the Hearing Committee of the House of Commons.
Here is link to Phillipe Sands’ testimony before the same Hearing Committee about the same matter.
When Your the begger, you are the begger and at the mercy of beggee. We sent the begger of the free world, to beg for us. Hope His begging is good, or we could become the begon.
“a small number of individuals”
Dick Cheney, George W Bush, David Addington, John Yoo… yep.
“And yet America is hardly free of censorship. Heck, the president himself has gone to court to prevent the release of photographs of US troops torturing captives in Iraq, Afghanistan and at Guantanamo. Talk about censorship! But it goes way beyond just such crude, totalitarian style control over information.
Let’s just take the issue of depleted uranium weapons, over 1000 tons of which have been expended in the US invasion of Iraq, most of it in populated areas where millions remain exposed to the radioactive dust of the burned material. There is almost no reporting on this topic in the US media.
There is no reason why the US media cannot report on depleted uranium and its deadly legacy in places where it has been used, such as Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan and Kosovo, or on and around American military bases from Maryland to Hawaii. And yet it does not.
The end result of such a process, however, is that the American public is as ignorant about certain things as someone in China.
More ignorant in fact. ”
