Thanksgiving conversations at a lot of families this year are likely to involve a lot of politics — dissecting, chortling, and/or teeth-gnashing after the election, and discussion about going forward. My guess is that most places, the economy and the bailout will be #1 on the list: a $7 trillion price tag has a way of focusing attention! Still, there’ll probably be opportunitites to talk about FISA and civil liberties as well.
The way to look at it is that this is a chance to try to let people know about the issue (many have never heard of it; others think that it was all over in July) and our successes so far — and try to get new people involved. It’s a recruiting opportunity; and it’s also a chance to test messages to see what is and isn’t persuasive to those who aren’t already convinced.
Some good things to think about:
- what’s a good way to bring up the issues of telecom immunity and warrantless wiretapping?
- think about some relatives who are likely to be skeptical but persuadable. how will you try to convince them?
- if people want to know more, where will you send them?
- if people want to get involved and help, what will you suggest?

I welcome your invitation to brainstorm about messages, JP. However, my holiday is an exercise in surviving the howls of the wounded cult members. Lots of head bobbing. A little ducking and weaving. And this is progress. I used to listen attentively. Now, not so much. It’s too much to expect any amount of info to go the other direction. I concentrate on stemming the deluge coming the other direction.
