I am the Afghanistan Blogging Fellow for The Seminal and Brave New Foundation. You can read my work on The Seminal or at Rethink Afghanistan. The views expressed below are my own.
As of this morning, the cost of our war in Afghanistan hit the $1 Trillion mark:
You can head over to Facebook and tell us what you would do with a trillion dollars. You’d be surprised at what you could be getting for that money. You could buy Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn many times over, or buy health care for everyone. Only it’s just a game, isn’t it? You’re not really buying that stuff. But as the video says, you’re not really getting what you’re paying for in Afghanistan either.
You’re not any safer because of that money. If anything, you’re less safe because of that wasted money. California had to cut its "Healthy Families" program, among countless other basic human services. We’re supporting corrupt drug addicts and committed war mongers overseas. We even have airplanes literally falling out of the sky because of how our broken our economy is. That trillion dollars is gone, the war is coming up to its 104th month, and we have only disaster to show for it.
But don’t be fooled by our Facebook app. It’s more than just a game. No, you can’t buy Bill Gates or the Large Hadron Collider, but you can actually force the government to spend money on programs which do make us safer. You can even cut off the war ending funding entirely. After all, the cost is just hitting $1 trillion, it’s not stopping there. It’s only going up, faster and faster as President Obama’s escalation continues. It’s not as simple as dropping your items in a shopping cart, but it doesn’t take much more than that either. With just a little bit of action, you can go way beyond a Facebook game and actually accomplish real change.
For example, here’s Rep. John Conyers, of the Out of Afghanistan Caucus, telling us what he would do with the money:
What could we have purchased with this $1 trillion? Today, we might be enjoying the fruits of a green economy, spurred by New Deal-like investments in wind and solar. Perhaps we would have created a single-payer health care system and used this $1 trillion to provide health security to every man, woman, and child in the United States for an entire year. Or, we might have made the smart investments in our domestic law enforcement capabilities and homeland security apparatus to provide true protection from Al Qaeda and others who would wish us harm. Sadly, we’ll never know, because our political leadership never explored alternative means of achieving peace, such as emphasizing rigorous regional diplomacy, and instead overextended our military forces abroad.
He’s a real congressman, with real power to introduce real legislation controlling real funds. And lo and behold, he’s doing exactly that, co-sponsoring the War is Making You Poor Act alongside Rep. Alan Grayson:
Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) introduced bipartisan legislation called the “War Is Making You Poor Act,” which aims to call attention to a) how much money is being spent to fight the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and b) how budget gimmicks are used to pay for them. Grayson’s legislation would slash the $159 billion request for supplemental war funding and use that money to deliver a tax break for all Americans. Grayson demands the Pentagon use its currently existing $549 billion defense budget to fight the wars.
It’s not just a game, that’s a real bill. Because their constituents pressured them into it, Conyers and Grayson turned an idea like actually getting something for our money into legislation, and with a little more pressure it can become law.
That’s where you come in. After you’ve played the game and told us about your plan, go just a little further and turn that plan into action. Call Congress at (202) 224-3121 and ask to speak to your representative. Tell them your plan for the trillion dollars. Tell them about all the real benefits we could be getting instead of wasting it on the disastrous war. Tell them to block the upcoming $33 billion war supplemental. Tell them $1 trillion is too much already and it has to end now. It takes a little bit more than a Facebook game, but not much.
We know this pressure works, we’ve seen its successes over and over. Just last week we saw a big move in the senate to end the war, all because constituents forced it. We have Conyers’ Out of Afghanistan Caucus, and Grayson’s War is Making Your Poor Act, not springing up spontaneously but because you demanded it.
So go check out the game, it’s fun. Tell us your plan on Rethink Afghanistan’s Facebook page, but remember, it’s more than just a game. You can turn that plan into reality, you can end the war in Afghanistan, it just takes a little pressure. Contact your representative, and tell them no more funding for a trillion dollar war that isn’t making us safer.

I didn’t even get a lousy T-shirt
LMAO…! Nice one, Ellie…! ;-)
Great job, Josh…!
If I had a $Trillion, I’d hire all manner of special prosecutors and go to work on oil, banking, defense and other transnational industry executives. And if any members of Congress tried to impede the process, I’d have them arrested and thrown into the same pile.
Oh…and I’d buy my own damn pony, too, since (it appears) the gubnint ain’t gonna be giving me one anytime soon.
It really is an excellent tool. Blew my mind what we could have had for that trillion dollars. I had to keep adding more and more goodies.
We should spend cash on useful things that pay us the money spend back like Green Power. We cannot afford the wars, we cannot afford to support the banks gambling with imaginary money.
The Neocons are worried about Ossama fine we we can cut off Ossama’s cash. A million Green cars a year would drop oil prices.

Don’t ever forget Barack Obama said in 2002 that an American war in Afghanistan was the “right war”. He said it in the presidential campaign of 2008. He called it a “war of necessity” in 2010 – no mention of what is the necessity.
This is the man who was favored by Democrats when they were able in 2008 to choose a different Democrat, a sensible, experienced politician who opposed both invasions by the US (Iraq and Afghanistan): Dennis Kucinich. This Obama was favored over the greatest American presidential candidate of our time: Ralph Nader. Why? Because “Nader could not win”! A vote for Nader was a vote for McCain, they said. Could McCain have been any worse than Barack Obama? Could Palin have been any worse a president than Barack Obama? Hard to imagine!
We now have a president who defied all the odds. No one imagined that GWB’s successor could be as bad or worse a president than GWB. But he is! BO is worse than GWB because he is more artful, glib, affable and because Obama has had the chance to see what GWB’s policiies have done to our country. Yet, Obama follows in GWB’s footsteps and in the footsteps of that other fool, Bill Clinton (NAFTA, de-regulation).
Whether Obama is in for four years or eight, he will not suffer for the harm he is doing to our country. He says, “I take responsibility”. How? How does this political miscreant take responsibility? Will he cut off a hand? Will he cut off a finger of his hand? Will he go to Tibet and shave his head? How will he take responsibility for the harm to our country, for the killing and suffering he is inflicting in foreign lands and on our own service people?
imperialism has a price
these two wars are the cost of imperialism.
this capitalist nation will meet its empiricist end as all nations of imperialism have in history.
watch world war two documentaries as the Germans lined up in the streets to cheer on their returning soldiers after they had invaded much of Europe.
then watch four years later as they were being bombed out and the Russians “hunting down the German women like rabbits” as one German woman remembers.
this will not happened to America but what will happen is bankruptcy in economic conditions to third world status.
few Americans understand we are imperialists even fewer understand the evils of capitalism left unchecked.
these young men were not drafted like the nam war but they were brainwashed in our educational and political and capitalistic systems to believe they are fighting for our freedoms.
Our soldiers that we call heroes are fighting for an imperialist and very self-righteous nation.
a nation where the congress, white house, supreme court, media, educational systems are controlled by corp fascism.
we are not in afghan so little girls can go to school as we are not in Iraq so they can be a democracy. it is about $$$$$$$$$$
but we will suffer because the same mentality that invaded Iraq for its oil is the same corp fascist capitalist mentality that created the massive oil slick in the gulf.
this is karma defined as a national mentality not a god made in man’s image punishing folks for their original sins.
Ouch, that’s pretty bleak dude. You know you can fix it just by putting some pressure back on your government, right? Those “corporate fascist” imperialists are still just boring old elected representatives. Their policies, no matter how wicked or destructive, rely explicitly on the consent of the governed (even if that consent is implied through apathy).
Why wait for karma? You can do something about it right now.
To believe that this country can be governed by consent is naive, Sir. We are governed by a system of campaign finance and careerist politicians. The Supreme Court has placed big obstacles in the path of changing these factors: 1st amendment and no term limits. It would take amendments to the Constitution to change the law as it now stands.
How do you subdue apathy when the apathetic are ignorant or uncaring citizens mesmerized by TV sitcoms and propagandized by corporate media? This country is NOT run by consent of the governed, because the governed are ignorant and want to remain ignorant.
your votes are worthless
follow the money
they want you to think you can change things.
check history then you will see what and who has controlled gov.
it is the system not the persons.
few in the world will understand my words very few.
the capitalists have you right where they want you
thinking you have control of gov.
the capitalists now even control the supreme court
and you think your votes count for change.
the system has 85 to 95% of the control of the outcome.
dr deming spent 50 years telling americans this and few listened.
very few had a clue what he meant, most still dont.
anyone that understands systems influence on human behaviour knows that capitalism must self destruct just as socialism and communism must also self destruct. that simple.
99% of americans would not know a social democracy if they fell on it.
Researcher: Do you mean “empiricist end” or “imperial end”? As an empiricist, I should hope you mean the latter. Most empiricists end as empiricists, though I suppose a handful end as idealists or even metaphysicians (or are they metaphysicists?) The English language is sooo difficult!
Researcher: Is it really about $$$$$$$$ ?????
I wonder if anything in Afghanistan is worth what we are borrowing to conquer! I think there is some copper there, and the Indians (not Mohawks or Comanches) would like to mine it. It is also a crossroads, maybe a place for a pipeline here or there. Mostly, it’s a rugged, mountainous or desert country that you have to have ancestors in in order to love fully.
To Josh Mull: Conyers and Grayson (Kucinich et al) are grandstanders. They all put in bills that have no chance of passing in order to look good for their followers. Their followers have grown far fewer since the Reps belied their pledge to vote against Obamacare unless it contained a vigorous public option. They betrayed us who supported them. Why did they betray us? The answer often given: they did not want to destroy Obama’s presidency!!! Why the Hell not! What in Obama’s presidency is worth saving?
The best thing is to abandon Obama and find another candidate, a candidate who will quickly end the wars if elected, maybe Feingold. We need to be rid of this war criminal Obama, not preserve him for another 4 years. OMG !!!!!!!!
The House Dems who broke their word are not worth spit!
How do you figure that all the money spent isn’t making me safer?
At the very least it’s actively employing a massive population of deluded sociopaths in a place very, very far away from me.
Why wait for karma?
Karma is perfect. Whereas human responses are almost always based in ignorance.
The same mentality that invaded Iraq for its oil is the same mentality that has created a massive oil slick in the gulf.
The same mentality that believes in capitalism of profits over people is the same mentality that borrows hundreds of billions of dollars from a communist country.
The same mentality that makes mega dollars off of health insurance by denying coverage for pre existing conditions to enhance corp profits and CEO bonuses is the same mentality that is causing a nation to self destruct economically and in moral values.
The same mentality that wants cheap labor is the same mentality that has open borders for third world workers, then arrest the third world workers and make them criminals. Tell me who are the real criminals in this tragedy?
The same mentality that is in love with capitalism is the same mentality that calls a corporation a person and their free speech includes their money. I.e. this allows the capitalist’s control of the reelection process that Americans think they control with their votes. This is the tragedy of ignorance.
The same mentality that loves capitalism is the same mentality that has allowed and created corp fascism. Can you not see that? The media will not tell you these things. They depend on corp money like congress does.
The same mentality that loves patriotism and nationalism beyond spiritual values is the same mentality that has wars for profits and parents that raise their children to fight in these wars for profits and then call their children heroes for fighting in these wars for profits.
Capitalism leads to imperialism no exceptions.
The list is long need I go on.
Now the good news: capitalism must self-destruct we are witness to that self-destruction now in this nation. What would the universe be without our self-destruction?

not what you read on here or any media
carlin knows the symptoms of capitalism but fails to see the systemic implications of capitalism.
most of the world confuses symptoms with origins or root causes.
