With the race tightening, the Feminist Majority has launched a campaign for Barack Obama (www.feministsforobama.org) to make sure that undecided women voters—the largest bloc that will decide at the last minute—support Obama.

Explains Feminist Majority President Eleanor Smeal:

“Not only is Joe the Plumber not named Joe, and not a plumber, he’s also the wrong gender. Women are the vast majority of undecided voters and we have to reach them on women’s issues. It’s Jane the Clerk, Jane the Garment worker, Jane the Factory worker.”

“During the debate, if you watched the tracking meter of the undecided-women’s focus group on CNN, you saw that when Joe the Plumber was mentioned, women’s response flatlined. When Obama touched on women’s issues, women’s response soared. Duh: Women respond to women’s concerns and are insulted when we’re not even mentioned.”

Smeal believes a McCain presidency would be disastrous for women, whereas Obama/Biden “have the strongest platform on women’s issues in history.” The Feminist Majority has created videos highlighting McCain’s terrible stance on three issues of broad concern to women — breast cancer, domestic violence and rape kits:

One in Six
"Under Sarah Palin, rape survivors were forced to pay up to $1200 for rape evidence collection kits."

Unholy Trinity
"John McCain voted against funding to fight and prevent domestic violence."

Violation
"John McCain and Sarah Palin are running on a platform that seeks to outlaw a woman’s right to an abortion even in cases of rape and incest."

“Women simply cannot afford a President McCain,” sums up Smeal.

More breakdown of the huge gulf between Obama and McCain on women’s issues is up at www.feministsforobama.org — check it out and pass it on to any Jane the Clerk you know!
