At the risk of becoming just another social media site, the Watercooler is seeking to learn more about the folks who read and write for The Seminal. We’re doing this by asking you to explain how and why you got your screenname. We’ll get the ball rolling with a few of our regular authors:
Bill Egnor (aka "somethingthedogsaid"): "In 2005 I was arguing with a conservative friend of mine about the war in Iraq. At one point he slams his beer down and tells me my ideas are about the same quality as the dog that told the Son of Sam to kill people. About two weeks later I was signing up on the Great Orange Satan and I wanted to be anonymous. I needed a screen name. Then it hit me, I would tell the world ‘Something The Dog Said."
Jim Moss (aka "justjim73"): "It was on the first day of a New Testament Ethics class when I was in seminary. The professor made us play one of those dorky get-to-know-you games. Everyone had to come up with an adjective to describe themselves that started with the same letter as their first name. I couldn’t think of anything, so when it came to be my turn, I blurted out, ‘I don’t know. I guess I’m just Jim.’ My friends all thought it was a brilliant pun to emphasize my interest in social justice (though I didn’t intend it that way), so the name stuck."
Jason Rosenbaum (aka "fatbyjhnsn"): "I picked it when I was in middle school because I thought it was funny. And never changed it."
Hmmm… It sounds like there’s more to this story that Jason’s not telling. Anyway, we’d love to hear about your screen names, and of course, whatever is on your mind tonight.

I got my user name from the days I spent in Hawaii as one haole type GI. A reminder of the good times indeed.
Mine comes from Noel Coward’s “Mad Dogs and
EnglishmenAmericans” (with apologies for the modification):My original FDL name (TeddySanFran) which I still use at Digby’s place, Eschaton and the Orangerie is my first name and current home town. I started using my real name at FDL when I hosted the Book Salon for David Sirota’s “The Uprising,” believing that an author deserved to be hosted by a “real” person.
Teddy isn’t actually my given first name, nor is Theodore, but I am a “third” and decided a while back I wanted my own name, not my dad’s or grandfather’s. Like the late Senator Kennedy I have an Ed- name that most people don’t think of when they see “Teddy.”
As an IT professional I have several un/pw combinations for different purposes (aaa/bbb for client’s sites I work on, ccc/ddd for financial sites like my bank and credit card, etc.)
I was signing up for (I think) townhall.com and none of my standard names were available. After trying four of five and finding them all already taken I started to get a little grumpy about it, and you can guess what happened next…
I started blogging at a time when a lot of political activity included anonymity giving the lowlife a feeling of freedom to be obnoxious, so I used my actual name as a contrast. The first one who says they think I AM obnoxious, gets unfriended, and I don’t even use FaceBook.
If being enshrined in the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame makes me a famous mountain biker, then I am a famous mountain biker.
One of my claims to fame was putting on the first of what years later turned into a world championship competition, downhill mountain bike racing. We called our race course “Repack,” because it destroyed the bike so completely that you had to take it home and repack all the bearings with grease.
It’s a long story, and I have collected it onto a website that will take you days to read.
There’s a hilarious take off on a red red haired red faced sweaty Englishman staggering around in the noon heat in Egypt in a Pynchon book.
These stories are a great read, keep ‘em coming.
cbl = Clare Boothe Lucid, my original online name since 2004
my real name is cynthia
wow. though I love Teddy Partridge – sounds like an earnest hero from a classic book
and MadDog – always assumed that was the origin of your handle :D
Did you ever watch Star Trek, the original series? In the episode, “A Piece of the Action” Kirk calls Spock, dressed as a gangster, “Spocko”. Then in the other classic episode, Spock’s Brain, a group of people steal Spock’s brain and put it in a box. It is used to power the complex and keep it running.
I combined the two because I felt that the act of blogging was taking your ideas and putting them in a box (a server) and it helps power a community. My ideas are out there working even when I’m physically in another place with my body. My “brain” (my ideas) are duplicated and are now floating around in boxes around the world.
Also, I like the idea of wearing a cool fedora.
ahh
so that explains it…
nothin’ clever about Elliott
on edit: and no comment on any other screenname I might employ elsewhere ;)
lol
once I became a firedog, I made it a rule to never use my fdl name anywhere else – just in case I said something extremely dumbass, I didn’t want it to reflect poorly on the tribe :D
That is an interesting conundrum for me too. My persona is simply the ordination received by dropping my 25 on Marcy’s thermometer. Now I’m stuck with it because the number doesn’t change even if I goose the kitty.
So what happens if I comment somewhere else? I’m still just a number.
But I like commenting here for some strange reason. It feels somehow familiar… alot more like home.
Maybe I was a different commenter in a past life…
Now that’s cool.
