It’s a slippery slope from dissent to treason, and it’s one that right-wing pundits started sliding down as soon as Obama was elected.
First, there was Rush Limabugh’s "I hope Obama fails" comment back in January. Then came Glenn Beck’s "Obama hates white people" rant from July. This Wednesday, Limbaugh might have crossed the line from commentary to incendiary exhortation with this quip on his radio show:
Many have said that this remark is much more than a joke. It’s calling for a military coup, and it’s sedition. Perhaps it’s time for the FBI to step in and flex its muscle, if for no other purpose than to keep these guys honest. Do we want to wait until something horrible is done by one of their followers before we take action?
What’s on your mind?

what’d Limbaugh say? can’t listen to the clip as my wife is sleeping (headed that way myself). I’m thinking about Afghanistan and whether we can extricate ourselves. also wondering how we call ourselves a nation when we rely on only a thin slice of the population and their families to bear the brunt of wars.
It’s the bit about “will they detain him” when Obama is at west Point for his speech.
very nice. I’m glad right wingers are so respectful of this president
Sedition is just warming up for Limbaugh.
Nyeaah! No court in the land would bring charges on that comment. He’d say it was simple satire, humor.
Besides, I wish they WOULD detain ‘im. For treason against Progs and all the people who worked so hard on his campaign!
Just what the country needs, an insurrection by the military. In the southern continent, they’re just emerging from that era of tinhorn dictatorships that so appeal to these banana republicans.
rush has not hidden it, he hates who we elected and wants him out of office even if it means the destruction of america
too late for that though, the previous adminstration had done quite niceley destroying this country
here’s what’s going on with rush;
he was irrevelent, in fact, he was and is counter productive, people have left the party en masse because of rush limbaugh
rush needed to re-exert his presence and the only way he could do that was to become obscene with political extemeism more extreme then he demonstrated before
he had to try to trick his financiers he’sworth his paycheck because it became obvious he’s not
they fell for it, they really do not know the damage he’s done to their party
Bush Co fell for it? Well in their crazy made believe world I guess so. Anything to keep the hatred going.
Jim, I wish they would ban him from radio. Either that or cut his time in half and make sure a progressive voice was heard on the same channels. There truly is no fair and balanced reporting or talk radio.
Personally I don’t think the limpet’s remarks went over the line. That being said, he get loonier by the day and it is only a matter of time before he does go too far. Limbaugh can’t survive unless he is in the glare of the klieglights and can’t keep in the light unless he gets more bizarre. Sooner or later he will fuck up and go the way of J McCarthy, Father Coughlin, or Westbrook Pegler. It became very apparent to everybody that those folks were bombastics assholes. Being bombastic doesn’t seem to bother enough people but being an asshole bothers everybody.
Limbaugh will claim, of course, that he simply meant “holding him up in his ‘oooh-so-important’ schedule”. Limbaugh has a whole list of these dog-whistle phrases that he pulls out that can taken several ways…the most obvious of which is to support insurrection, or opposition, or is seditious. But he can always whine “I didn’t mean THAT! When I said we need a ‘revolution’ I just meant ‘dramatic change’.”
Remember this is the same guy that stated that British PM Brown likely was infected with “anal poisoning” after slobbering all over Obama. He said this in daytime hours, over 500 BROADCAST radio stations, without airing a warning about inappropriate language. Clearly it was a “reference to sexual or excretory acts or organs” far worse that the veiled “Carlin broadcast”- which was veiled, and actually both literary and funny.
Making fun of the “The cock crowed three times” is actually insightful. Limbaugh’s statements are simply “inciteful” filth. Yet the FCC sanctions ABC for millions while Limbaugh is allowed to go on and on.
