Update… at end of post.
Whatever anti-koolaid beverage Arianna Huffington drank in order to see the current Reality for what it is, I just wish she would bottle it, sell it, and use her vast resources to distribute it inside the beltway, and especially in the West Wing.
From the last third of her recent post, in which Arianna asks if the current and ongoing unemployment crisis will become Barack Obama’s Katrina:
When we hear about members of Congress holding up a vote (and we’ve heard it a lot lately), most of the time, it’s a ploy to secure some kind of pork for their home district. This was an instance of the brakes being put on not for pork — but for principle. [Note: Refers to members of congressional black caucus shutting down a financial services committee vote important to WH.]
So, clearly, the winds of change are picking up in Washington and around the country. It’s time for the White House to stop holding no-rush summits and insisting that everything is going as planned, and course-correct. Now. And there is no shortage of bold steps the administration can take to mitigate the damage before it turns into an all-out catastrophe.
Among the best ideas currently being floated:
– Use Wall Street bailout funds left in the TARP program to hail out Main Street (via increased lending to small businesses and using money for public services being cut by states and cities).
– Enact a one-year payroll tax holiday (creating a moratorium on Social Security, Medicare, and FICA taxes will encourage businesses to hire new workers).
– Expand the Small Business Association’s lending programs (45 percent of all job losses have been at small businesses).
– Offer businesses a tax credit for every new job created over the next 12 months, or have the government pay a portion of the salary of new workers hired over the same period.
The bottom line: extending unemployment benefits, crossing your fingers, and waiting for things to turn around is just not enough.
In the post-Katrina fallout, video surfaced of a final briefing before the storm hit in which federal disaster officials warned President Bush that the hurricane could breach the levees and overwhelm the ability of rescuers to properly respond. Bush famously didn’t ask a single question but assured local officials: "We are fully prepared." He later insisted, "I don’t think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees."
Are we going to get similar protestations from Obama when the unemployment waters continue to rise?
Earlier on, Arianna also took both Geithner and Summers to task for their cavalier* [my word, not hers] attitudes about the effects of the rising tide of unemployment.
And she cited one of Ryan Grim’s posts about the rebukes coming from the Democratic wing of the Democratic party in congress and directed specifically at the White House, for not doing enough to staunch the hemorrhaging of jobs. Clearly, members of the House, who must run for re-election every two years, can read the smoke signals circling their home districts. They do not want to risk running with an economy still heading toward the cliff, i.e., no growth in jobs. Who, in their right mind, would?
My apologies for mangling so many metaphors; I know it’s messy, but it’s meant to reflect the utter messiness of an administration, for which we may have had some hope, but which has pretty much disappointed most of us. So far.
Now, for your viewing wonderment… two interesting videos [from Bush's tenure] that display the full hypocrisy of the GOP, Blue Dogs, and even some run-of-the-mill Democrats who claim that they prioritize our national security (i.e., continuing the "wars" in Iraq and Afghanistan) above jobs creation. Simply asounding!
[Part II will appear at the end of Part I.]
* I think "cavalier" pretty much sums up the POV of those with enough money, enough power to keep on getting enough money, and the deep sense of denial to think that neither they nor their loved ones can ever suffer the ignominious fates that have befallen so many hard-working people. I actually used the word during a recent transit strike when speaking to one of the management guys at a station, where they were acting like they worked for Homeland Security, but less seriously, since they were laughing at distraught passengers left in the lurch. He probably had to look up the word later, since he asked me what I thought they should do.
Update: Also from Ryan Grim… Nancy Pelosi explains why jobs creation should trump paying down the deficit. Without jobs and their resultant taxes, revenues drop, and then, the deficit explodes.

Jobs jobs jobs. That’s all we should hear.
The problem is that nobody in Washington, or out in the country has a idea how to create jobs.
They won’t listen to any that do.
So we are doomed to the fickle finger of fate, whether we can get jobs.
I agree with you about job-creating know-how in Washington, but I did think the suggetions in Arianna’s post made a lot of sense.
Too bad they’ll likely never see the light of day in the West Wing.
Recommended. Thank you, KarenM. See this article:
Snip > [My first thought was what a tragedy a cheap junk ventilation system in a subway could bring about...]
It gets worse after that first paragraph. Apparently the costs of these projects are coming out of the ‘stimulus’ money.
And just today I heard parts of Obama’s oh so sympathetic speech about the high unemployment and the need for jobs. So much for cheap talk.
hey acquarius, finally heard the awesome mcgovern tape. thank you soooo much. some serious revelations there.
Hey Libby! I’ve been looking through my bookmarks for a long-winded reply to your comment but can’t seem to locate the specific diary. It was one of those where 2 of us were having our conversations.
Ray McGovern has an op-ed posted yesterday which draws parallels between Afghanistan & Vietnam; Obama’s crucial decision compared with JFK’s decision whether to withdraw (against all his Generals advice) or escalate. JFK stood firm on the right decision, part of what got him killed. Don’t want to go any further off topic here.
hey acquarius, i read the recent one he wrote about should Obama fire McChrystal and once again, such a clear sensibility. Moral sensibility.
he really unfolds the top down corruption. and Bush’s “let’s kick some a**” comment that rippled outward, horrifyingly. Addington and Gonzalez hustling to make torture happen. And what torure gives. FALSE EVIDENCE. The entry into war with Iraq… and how our leaders and England and then NATO, everyone led down the garden path of horror by little, incompetent “shrub” and the puppetmasters, Cheney and Rumsfeld and God knows the other invisible corporate puppetmasters, still perpetrating.
it is hard to sustain a long look at evil it is so repellant and encourages such fierce denial in others, understandably, especially with the depths of the evils perpetrated. Do you read Glenn Greenwald at Salon? His sarcasm about the Obama administration can be priceless at times. Obama’s commitment to not disturbing collective denial in this country.
GG was speaking about Lithuanian black site, and faux scolding the administration there for having no shame and demanding accountability for the use of their building for torture, an old riding school. He scolded them for being so obsessed with the PAST and inconveniencing others, not like Obama. I can’t do it justice, but his archness, his way of indignation, is cathartic to read.
Ai yai yaiii, Acquarius!
Has no one resonsible for awarding these contracts read about the shoddy school construction in China that cost so many children’s lives during that earthquake not so long ago?
In the supermarket, at least I have a choice about whether to buy anything from Asia, but a subway ventilation system?! Don’t think I’ll be riding one in Manhattan (should the opportunity arise).
Karen, those ventilation systems are more important than the average person realizes. About a year ago I went to the local Wallmart during winter. Air was cool and moist. That night I developed a hot streaming nose and hacking couch which lasted about a month; the very devil to wear out. Next time I went there it was hot summer, not a cloud in the sky. That night same thing and symptoms lasted longer. I sit and ponder things – came to the conclusion that the air circulation/ventilation system in Wallmart circulates all the emanations from all those imported clothes which contain God knows what kind of dyestuff and contaminates. It’ll be snowing in Hades before I go there again.
Wallmart put all the local hardware stores out of business by selling cheap junk tools and small electrical items. Now if I need something like that I haunt Pawn shops where older but life-time guaranteed tools and items made in USA can still be found. I also buy my clothes at consignment shops and read the labels and note what the material is made of.
Going to search to see if there is more on that hijacking of jobs by the big Chinese dragon. They will no doubt bring the contaminated materials to do the job from China; will they also bring ‘coolee’ labor? There ought to be a riot about this – but America sleeps on.
Costco just came to Manhattan … well Harlem but just a subway stop or two north of Manhattan. Manhattan was fighting to keep out the big monsters, but they have prevailed and with the economy, it sets it up that consumer Americans put working Americans … each other and themselves … more and more out of work buying the cheap imports. A vicious, crazymaking cycle.
Is anyone in Congress still doing their job of actually working for the plight of the citizenry? I know. Some. But not it seems more than you can count on one hand with fingers left over.
Globalization. Elitism as Karen says. The crony codependency, bought and paid for by the corporations has stunningly saturated our center of governance.
Karen, wonderful diary. Recommend.
FDR made the jobs programs work. Let’s go for it. Arianna, good for you. I like her perspective (though I am upset with her website seeming to have a blind spot in exploring truth about Israel).
You know, I heard just a bit of a hedge fund .. director, owner, whatever, on Charlie Rose and he was minimizing the recession… and also defending corporations deciding to outsource labor to other countries because there was a “stronger work ethic” over there. I got so enraged.
Having personally lost my last job to India. The fact that other countries have lower wages, and fewer protections and regulations and responsibilities on a corporation as a work community seemed the HONEST answer.
I am also tired of hearing the wealthy elite class do commentary on what the economic reality of America is right now on the media. Not surprised but disappointed. John Edwards was right. There are two Americas. And only one is getting nurturance and attention and respect.
Citizenry just to be spun by a corrupt congress and a corporate owned media.
“elite” = cavalier
At least, it appears to these days.
I’m sorry about your job, Libby.
thanks, Karen.
re job, got another one not that long after am desperately hoping will be “sustainable” (as they say).
acquarius and libby:
I keep thinking of the golden goose, and how it is being slain so very, very slowly. Soon it will lay its last golden egg, if it has not already done so.
KarenM and Libby, I’ve searched for more info on The Big Chinese Dragon (/s) that won the $100 Million contract for the Manhattan subway vent system; not another single report other than the one in the China Daily that I quoted.
You’d think the NY Times and Wall St Journal would be right on top of that, huh? I could not find a word on it! The Big Boys don’t want all the jobless and homeless in NY City to get wind that the stimulus money alloted to go toward creating jobs for our own unemployed is going to monster foreign corporations. Is it strange that this announcement in China came on the heels of Obama’s visit there? Was this a trade? (don’t call in the loans and we’ll give you these fat contracts…??)
Karen, I noted in the article that one of the other jobs this Corp got the contract on is a High School !!!
Who is the SOB currently in charge at Dept of Commerce? (I’ll google it).
I’m a child of the Big Depression; these little boys playing grown-up know nothing of the reality that is ahead if they do not attend to this grave national employment matter now.
Dept of Commerce: Secretary: Gary Locke; Deputy Secretary: Dennis F. Hightower; Undersecretary: Rebecca Blank [IMHO she wears rose-colored glasses.]
This link gives a list of states, counties, cities in US that have received grants under the Economic Development Administration’s program authorized by The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The list was last updated 08/17/2009. The list shows no grant to New York or NY City. [so, more digging about any grant to NY since 8/17]
acquarius:
I hope you do a stand-alone post on this “Chinese Dragon.” It’s really shocking. And we do know that people of influence read here. At least some do. If members of congress do not know this, then they should, and if they do, they should know that the word is going to get around. Starting here.
Karen, I’m really just a hacker with a very suspicious mind when it comes to gov. (I was hoodwinked by it for most of my long life). I’d really rather that you, marcos, or Libby did the stand-alone diary on it. Also, we really need at least 1 more source…which I cannot find. If it’s kosher, why so secret?
Meanwhile, how about making a list of dangerous products that have been shipped into the US? Toys with lead paint, tainted baby milk, poison dog food, defective baby cribs, [what can you folks add?]
Karen, do you know which Chinese company built the shoddy schools that collapsed in the earthquake?
acquarius, tonight at dinner I heard someone mention sheetrock, which we don’t manufacture enough of (wonder why) and we had to import some from China (I think) for use in Florida to rebuild. I should confirm that I’m remembering that correctly, though…
I’m in the middle of a couple of things at the moment, but after the weekend, I may be able to turn some attention to this. However, I’ve noted that Libby is really, really good at synthesizing material.
I don’t know if a specific company is implicated, but there are lots of stories on the internet about the numbers of schools that collapsed, the adequacy of the building codes, and the likelihood of corruption.
It’s really late for me now. Maybe more tomorrow.
Karen, please see my #26. NY politics has always been dirty and those who oppose the ruling group are dealt with harshly. As stated above, the Metropolitan Transit Authority is Big Bucks. I think it would take a really dedicated group of residents of NY City to effect change and speak out about this China company taking stimulus money intended for jobs for Americans. I’m just saying take care, we need all clear thinking people to live to fight another day.
I did read that caution, acquarius, and noted it. I am not rash. ;~)
Karen, here is another source, which takes its into from the same article in my comments (China Daily), however it quotes the Wall Street Journal in an odd sort of way. I’ll see what can find on WSJ.
Here’s link to the Wall Street Journal Online; I can’t find anything on this corporation in it using its search box and looking in addition. Maybe one of you can find a ref.
It may be that the author of the last article I gave called someone at WSJ and got that statement. …I guess this info must be kept secret in the interest of national security, huh? (/s)
acquarius and Karen, not the first time Asian engineers for NYC subway system. There were a series of trains made that were noticeably structured wrongly … it was kind of funny … on the seat indentations, they were much too small for the average New Yorkers. The Asian ass-size was far smaller than the average New Yorker’s so the seats were not terribly comfortable due to those indentation grooves for the plastic seats. It was kind of funny, but the outsourcing then was not as sobering as now.
That would be comical, Libby, if only it weren’t part of such a serious problem.
It is also time to end “insourcing” through the H1-B visa program.
See: http://www.cs.ucdavis.edu/~matloff/h1b.html
CostCo is big box but not race to the bottom.
marcos, that is an excellent, eye-opening article at your link, it deserves a really hard-hitting diary. How about it?
I have a son age 54 who is a Microsoft licensed programmer with a degree in electronics, thus he knows and understands things about computers that those with only one field cannot diagnose/fix. His firm hires foreigners, mostly Asia/India. He just will not see that were it not for his unique skills he would be long gone. (His salary is up pretty high now.)
Karen, look at this NY Times article 2007, excerpt pertains to “the Chinese Dragon”
.
Someone living in NY City needs to question their Rep and Senators about this…how was this contract bid out (or was it?), Who was the contracting agent for NY City? How much were the next nearest bids in $$$ cost?
Were American construction companies notified and invited to bid?
If the Chinese Dragon was willing to bid-rig on a $6 Million contract, imagine what they’d do for one @ $100 Million.
Perhaps Anthony Weiner would be a good place to start, since he at least seems to be in touch with his constituents.
To all above: I’ve done searching into the Metropolitan Transit Authority and have concluded we’re dealing with deep, deep politics here which could be “unhealthy”. Big money deals managed from congress, to NY statehouse to NY City on down and includes Teamsters Union; MTA budget for 2010 is $11 Billion. On 11/04/09 the president of MTA, Howard H. Roberts, Jr, resigned after a 2 1/2 year tenure in the job (been with MTA since 1981); article mentioned his being “a scapegoat”…
I am not equipped to enter into such a world. (I live in mid-America). It appears to me that again the guardians are fat foxes. Might be wise to consider carefully before proceeding.
The whole game of politics is who can not bring change so that they are nonthreatening enough to climb the greased pole, and once in power, offer up the benefits of public spending to the correct sources who, in turn, would support, and as importantly, not oppose, continued ascension of the elected.
This is being played out in the California Governor’s race. Should Senator Feinstein decide to run for Governor, it will be because it makes more sense for Dick Blum’s business interests than her continued tenure overseeing the intelligence apparatus which provides both opportunity and protection to Dick’s war profiteering. I can’t see how she makes the jump, as the headache of trying to govern California cannot compete with the riches to be gleaned by having the CIA’s gonads in a vise.
