Before the Presidential debate last Wednesday, I had jokingly commented on another blog that my husband and I might do a drinking game during it. We could take a shot every time someone lied – and that we’d probably be drunk within ten minutes. If we’d opened a bottle of vodka instead of eating ice-cream, I might still be hung over.

Not to be too petty … ah hell … why not? When the President began his response to the first question, he said that he had many important points to make – but that none was more important than giving a shout-out to his “Sweetie,” Michelle. He then went on for a long bit about her and their anniversary. My first thought as I groaned aloud was, “Come on! Give me a break! You really need to do this in front of 60 million people? Could you get any faker?” And then, the democratic-socialist-liberal that I am thought about the people out there watching – unemployed, foreclosed upon, sick without health insurance, crushed and ruined by student loan debt – and I thought, “There really is nothing else more important than your proclamations of love for your wife? You can’t keep that between the two of you and focus first on the business of the people?” Well…I said it was petty of me. Actually though, as it turned out, that was probably the most vigorous thing he said all night.
Anyway, after this wet dishrag of a debate, I read tons of blogs, newspapers and other articles that dissected the candidates, their demeanors and proposals. People spoke of Mitzy’s energy and dynamic passion. To my mind, that might have played better if it had been modulated. What I saw instead was an unrelenting manic romp. He looked and behaved like someone wrenched off his bipolar meds. And then when he came up for air – he stood there gazing at Obama with this weird, half-crazed grin. It wasn’t even a grin exactly – more a kind of death rictus. This is what people found presidential and self-possessed?
The main thing that stood out to me though – and that only a few people wrote about – was that although Mitzy lied like it was going out of style, Obama couldn’t really counter any of his attacks because their policies were basically the same. They both love corporations, big business and Wall Street. Obama even admitted they agreed on Social Security cuts. They both can’t wait to sign more trade deals, like NAFTA. As for the environment, I wish I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard Obama mention that lovely phrase, “clean coal.” And naturally, Romney wants to rip the landscape apart digging for more of that pristine energy source.
Obama and Mitts want to implement the suggestions in Simpson-Bowles – which includes closing tax deductions for mortgage and student loan interest as well as raising the retirement age for Medicare. Obama’s plans for the future are little more than tweaks to a deeply entrenched system that looks out for multi-national corporations and the money-changers, not for the poor or working stiffs. The differences in their beliefs, plans and priorities are little more than table crumbs.
Romney did let some truth slip in every now and then. He bragged about his desire to cut out whole swaths of government jobs – but Obama has done the same thing. Plus, he already froze the pay of government janitors, secretaries and such. Neither of them are particularly concerned about the fact that these folks are actually people, with bills and families to support and lives to live. Nope…they’re history. Go get a job in the private sector for eight dollars an hour.
So, what the hell was Obama going to fight back with? A populist viewpoint that he doesn’t even hold? I think not. And since Mitts was stealing all the populist lines in his bewildering lie-a-thon, Obama had nowhere to go really.
And that’s all I’ve got, as Big Bird has been covered enough. I don’t know if I can stomach another one of these debates. The whole thing is such a sad, depressing, idiotic charade. Who’s ahead? Who’s down in the polls? Who spins the best lie? Who can best convince a gullible public to vote for him, only to be sold down the river? Who manipulates the voters with the most finesse and style? Honestly, it gives new meaning to Charlie Sheen and “Winning!”

And it may even have been not a lie.
It has been said that Americans will choose the real republican over the republican wannabe every time and it looks as though they may be doing just that.
A+
Get ready for 8 more yrs. of Reptile rule. I predict at the end of that period SSI will be privatized ( gutted.) Medicare voucherized ( gutted.) Medicaid returned to States and totally defunded ( gutted.) We’ll be entering our 9th yr. of war with Iran and in a stalemate. The UI rate will be 0% but 30% won’t have a job they just won’t be counted anymore. The climate will be far worse, but any discussion about it will be illegal and last but not least Abortion and Contraception will be illegal again in all 50 States. All because one Barack AKA Barry Obama couldn’t bother to prepare for one debate because his squad of ass kissing yes-men he keeps close by told him he had it in the bag. Obama will join his pal Billy Clinton on the 100K a speech tour and will also become eventually a Reptile himself.
Yup–Recommended. Those were conclusions I arrived at pretty much right after the debate, when I was scraping my jaw off the floor at all the stuff Romney said that agreed with Obama’s own platform, right down to that bit about “clean coal”. How can you attack a guy who sounds just like you?
My impression was that Mitt was taking the role of Bugs Bunny attempting to psyche Obama into deciding that it wasn’t rabbit season but duck season, and Obama wasn’t biting.
What amazes me, though, is the bump Romney’s getting in the polls because he basically debated in favor of the stuff Obama was for so well he might as well have become an Obama operative. Conservatives LIKE this, huh? Wut?!
‘Scuse me but I gotta scrape my jaw off the floor again.
Thank you, Kate.
“A populist viewpoint that he doesn’t even hold”.
Kate, how very correct you are and that adds considerable irony to the FOUR identical adverts on this page … one actually “positioned between your post and the comments.
“OBAMA – BIDEN
SIGN UP TO
VOLUNTEER
for
BARACK
GET STARTED!
(PAID FOR BY OBAMA FOR AMERICA)”
The irony fairly drips.

You forgot one. Buy stock in privatized prisons because the prison population will sky rocket.
This is why I adore this site more than any other – the readers and writers are so intelligent and articulate. I appreciate, more than you can imagine, the kind words directed at me. But even more – just reading everyone’s opinions – I don’t know…just gives me hope in humanity – well…maybe a small portion of it, but it’s there nonetheless. When you see how tens of millions of people will just happily go to the voting booth and pull the lever, with no real reservations about these two clowns – it makes me realize there’s not a lot of hope for a better political outcome – at least not in my lifetime.
You are absolutely right. Obama’s only possible response would have been to lie as well as Romney and claim to be the progressive he never was. Another are aof agreement is immigration. While Obama has ramped up Bushs Secure Communities program and deported a record number of immigrants, Romney wants to make life so miserable for them they will deport themselves. And neither seems to think the US bears any responsibility for the 60,000 lives lost in the ongoing Mexican war which has sent so many fleeing for their lives to the US.
Conservatives mostly don’t like Mitt, either, esp the fundy base bc Mitt is a Mormon. However, you may be forgetting a salient point: Mitt is whitey-white-white. Ergo…
Eh? there’s no “eventually” here. Obama’s always been a NeoCon conservative and really “should have” run as a Republican. At least, that would’ve been more, cough cough, honest & transparent.
However, the PTB quickly realized that they couldn’t get their
racistsbigotsKKK membersbase to vote for a black man. Ergo…Thanks for your summary, which accords with others that I’ve heard and read. I *refused* to waste my precious & valuable time on this Kabuki Show. I guess, in some way, it might’ve been interesting just to witness Mitt lying consistently but still somehow managing to wipe the floor with Zero.
I think we’re fecked, but I’m voting Third Party. What’s the point otherwise. The “one” from Column A is pretty much exactly the same as the “one” from Column B.
I do have some trad-Dem friends who have been flapping & twirling since the “Big Debate” because they are sooooooooooo disappointed in their Savoir Obama. Boo hoo hooo…. and Barry would just be so much better than Mittens. How? I truly don’t know. don’t get that kind of hero worship.
I refuse to waste my precious & valuable time on any of the other debates as well. What’s the point? The whole Kabuki Show is bogus anyway.
I was drinking for another reason, it made me depressed. I much perfer Obama’s US in slow decline than Romney’s final “Last Hurrah”. None of us know what would be the straw that would break the cam ell’s back, but a ton of new militarily expense will break it in a hurry. However I tuned my computer to the last half of the expanded debate and cheered up in a hurry.
The expanded Vice President debate is Thursday Cheri Honkala the Green and Lois Rodriguez the VP of the Justice Party, both who came out of dirt poor poverty will inspire the poor to participate or else one of them will make the other look like dirt.
Judge Jim Gray the Libertarians used to like to put young hoods like Lois once was, away. Now if he participates he and Lois will talk about the desperate need to legalize drugs,
