My father fought for civil rights and against the Vietnam war. He did it by marching, by showing up over and over again.
The march yesterday scared me because they (the lunatic fringe) were there and they had signs and congressmen and news coverage. We need to be there, by the tens of thousands, with signs that say we DO support health reform, we are angry at big insurance and big phrma and we will not let anyone else die because they are poor. We need to stand with Congressmen Grayson and Weiner and so many other good progressives so that they are not standing alone.
I have contacted the offices of both Congressmen mentioned above to ask for some recommended dates for a pro-reform march and to ask if they would be willing to address the crowd. I am willing to personally rent a bus for the trip from NY to DC – anyone willing to join me?

I’ll reserve a seat on that bus. Just need to know when.
I am open to suggestions as to a date. I am hoping to hear back from at least 1 congressman in regard to good dates for them….
It’s a terrible bill. Whatever game Bachmann is playing it’s a bill that the insurance industry and Republicans secretly love. There’s no PO worth the name and a HUGE tax hike on the working poor / lower middle class. There’s no price reduction but a huge hike in industry profits paid for by tax payers. Furthermore since the progressive block in congress (and out of congress for that matter) promised to oppose any bill without a robust public option if they back down they will lose any credibility and have no power on any other legislation.
Kill the bill.
I don’t necessarily love the bill. I am not suggesting that we march in support of the specific bill as much as I am suggesting that we need to be seen supporting reform. We need to be seen supporting rep. Weiners amendment and seen fighting against Rep Eshoos ammendment. We need to be seen
David Koch…a rightwing nutcase, with BILLIONS to spend, bussed in those dummies, some with NO healthcare….then he payed the most physically attractive, souless member of congress to spew the division
I am well aware that they are not the “grassroots demonstrators” they are made out to be but they are still being seen and heard and we are not there. I have made countless phone calls and knocked on countless doors and so have you all but that doesn’t get headlines. Tens of thousands of people standing in front of the capitol does.
If we show up its to tell them to start over fresh with Single Payer and dare the “Yes But’s”, “Do Nothings” and “Party of No” to not vote for it.
The country is in crisis NOW, we need to do health care reform RIGHT the first time, we don’t have time to go back and fix it.
OK, I agree. Then let’s show up for that! I am all for single payer and so are most of us but we didn’t force anyone to listen to us. The republicans bow down to the base because the base doesn’t give them a choice, neither do the corporate sponsors. Roosevelt said “make me do it”, let’s make someone do it. I say again, I will rent a bus from NY to DC on any day that I can get enough people to fill that bus. We need to be there and we need to be seen.
Go for it, but most of the people who should go are to busy working, or not working so they couldn’t afford to go.
One has to wonder on a weekday, or normal day of work, how so many of the Repubs can find the time to go. Could they be getting reimbursed in some way for their participation?
I realize that they have no jobs and are being shipped in and are simply the stooges of the corporate right. We still need to show up. We write beautifully, we call constantly, we are correct and yet single payer was never an option. The lesson of the civil rights movement and of the Vietnam protests is SHOW UP. They cannot ignore the capitol mall FILLED with people. If Michelle Bachman can get 4000, however she did it, can’t we get 40,000? I know all of the reasons that it will be hardbut I can’t believe that it is not worth the effort.
