House Majority Leader Eric Cantor will be giving a speech on income inequality at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management Friday between 12:15 and 1:00 pm.
And several Chicago area Occupy groups will greet him.
In the wake of that announcement, at least four groups are planning coordinated protests Friday, according to their representatives and Facebook postings.
Occupy Northwestern will be forming a picket line outside the Allen Center starting noon Friday, said one of its organizers, graduate student Lauryn Flizeer. She added some Occupy Chicago participants will be traveling north to join the campus-based group.
Flizeer said she was “inspired by UPenn” to challenge Cantor’s on-campus appearance, pointing to his recent lecture cancellation at the Ivy League school after Occupy protesters showed up in force.
The Facebook event page for the Occupy Northwestern protest urges participants to give Cantor the “same kind of welcome they gave him at UPenn.”
Last week, the House Majority Leader canceled a speech at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Unlike the University of Pennsylvania speech, which was open to the public, Cantor’s Kellogg Management speech at the Allen Center will be closed to the general public. Only those that RSVP Kellogg will be admitted and, according to The Daily Northwestern, the Allen Center is already nearing its’ capacity.
Jeez, you’d think that if the Majority Leader of the United States House of Representatives were giving a speech on income inequality at one of the nation’s premier business schools, that the school’s website would publicize the speech, right?
UPDATE- Well, the Eric Cantor speech wasn’t open to the public but a November 1st speech by Andrew Breitbart will be open to the public.
And check out the topic: Hollywood, the Media, and Obama: How Elites are Taking Away Your Freedoms.
Andrew Breitbart is going to Northwestern University to criticize “”elites” that are taking away freedoms. I can’t wrap my head around that one.
And Northwestern….seriously?
Special thanks to the Occupy protestor from today that tipped me to this event.

Bet they read their email.
Red’c
In the spirit of free speech we have decided to make it difficult or impossible for Cantor to exercise his right to free speech.
Winning the Future!
Rafe,
Care to compare this to the tea party folks who showed up at Townhall meetings throughout 2010?
My bet is that you had no problem with those. Funny how the Republicans had no problem labeling the Democrats as cowards for avoiding the orchestrated tea party folks.
I have lived in the Chicago area most of my life, I’m truly surprised at Northwestern doing this.
“I’m truly surprised at Northwestern doing this”
Follow the money. I’m sure you’ll find many GOPer allumni willing to make a phone call to protect Cantor from the unwashed masses.
Boxturtle (Doesn’t mean that NW doesn’t need yelled at for it)
Free speech isn’t the right to go to any institution you want and speak privately to the students without folks protesting that you and the institution are doing it.
I know this may be difficult for you to grasp but:
–he has a right to speak at Kellogg if they want him to — even privately, AND
–everyone has a right to protest that he is doing so.
Get it?
Is NW going to allow the protesters on its property?
Gee, maybe he’ll even tell them that hundreds of Kellogg alumni were employed on Wall Street when the TBTF banks brought the financial system down.
Ya think?
Best one-liner I’ve heard wrt just plain crazy actions of U.S.: empire makes you stupid.
Wh applies in this case bc Cantor is just plain crazy stupid.
But even then…
I mean, what B-School wouldn’t want the Majority Leader of the United States House of Representatives to speak at their school about a hot topic of the day?
But why is Kellogg so ashamed (?) that Cantor is giving the speech that it doesn’t even mention the speech on its’ website.?
The student newspaper has run several stories on both the speech and the upcoming protests. So it’s not like it’s a big secret.
How much is he getting paid for this speech with tax payer dollars? This sounds like a kick back Cantor says does what WallStreet wants and he gets paid speaking engagements, book deals etc as a way to funnel him cash.
At the risk of stating the obvious, Cantor wants to get an alternative explanation out there for rising income equality. He’s too stupid to have written the speech himself — probably authored by Cato or Heritage.
Our problem is that the alternative explanation will appeal to the clown in the WH. He’s already said we’ve gotten lazy.
But why is Kellogg so ashamed?
Why? Asking Cantor to speak about income inequality is like asking a pimp to talk about prostitution.
Chances are anything he says can be found on any number of Righty Think Tank web sites. Chances are he is using the same funny stats and facts they use I would love to get a copy of his speech and fact check it.
Chances are he will not take questions and f he does any Lefty questions will get you kicked out or maybe arrested.
I see no reason why a Government official speaking at a school that takes tax payer money needs to speak privately besides the fact he is politically unpopular, what he says is lies and those lies can be used against him.
And of course paying him money to say stuff that is probably available for free at any Righty think tank web site does seem like a huge waste of tax payer money and a way to pay him cash from WallStreet that does not violate campaign finance law and laws about taking bribes.
Did you voice similar thoughts 2 summers ago when the Koch brothers bought the so-called Tea Party and, via Dick Armey, insighted them to go to Town Halls & shriek & scream at non-Tea Party citizens who were attempting to have their voices & opinions heard?
Does your scathing criticism of OWS citizens exercising their civil rights in a peaceful protest also extend to the Tea Partiers 2 years ago when they disrupted Town Halls so much that other citizens didn’t even have a chance to speak?
Yeah: didn’t think so, Rafe. IOKIYAR & support the 1% at all costs. Got it.
For our troll,
Cantor has no more, or less, a right to free speech than any other American.
Thanks for the post, kevinchi.
No doubt. I’m sure that Cantor is *richly rewarded* by the 1% to barf out his skeevy weasle “platitudes.”
Free Speech he is paid by the tax payers to in part talk about this topic. This school gets tax money and yet this talk is closed to the public? A Campaign Speech can be closed to the public but then any money he gets should be subject to campaign finance laws.
Are you arguing for legalized bribery?
So we know at least one word that will be in the speech.
Geez, it’s so frustrating. (Or do I have to put that wrod in quotes from here on out.)

The Unemployment Rate will yield to the Frustration Index — unless that goes up too.
Sorry, meant for eCAHN
Maybe if he brought a tent and a drum they’d be more accomodating.
Do you mean the “Frustration” index?
“Yes”
I think it’s good for #OWS to move out from stationary holds in parks and plazas, where they’re sitting ducks, to actively protest in the name of the 99%. I hope #OWS will be very visible during the 2012 campaigns, in a peaceful and positive way, to explain and make outreach to people who choose from only D’s & R’s (one from Column A, or one from Colmn B).
Time for more mobility and an more activist stance against the moneyed class (and their flying-monkey henchmen).
If this is class war, and it is, make the most of it.
Cantor’s appearance puts the students who plan on attending the speech in a dilemna. Do they side with Cantor who represents the corrupt establishment, or do they side with those of their own age in the OWS movement.
The more revolting that Cantor’s speech is, the easier it will be to make that decision.
Oh fer crying out loud. It’s a B school. What’s this dilemma you speak of.
OWS has reached a new milestone if the establishment hooligans now have to conduct their propaganda sessions in secret. But then, rats do like darkness.
Oh, dear, it looks like Eric the Wonder Lizard will have to run away and hide again.
I don’t think there will be a dilemma.
“I love it when a plan comes together.”
Hannibal Smith, The A-Team
Where’d you get “wonder”? I thought he was just Eric the Lizard. Or, Eric the Snake. Same difference.
I agree. We should “take the high ground”. I’m not sure where, exactly, that is, but that’s what they always say to do.
We should fight them on the beaches, in the trenches, and in the air.
Well, you know what I mean.
Correlates well with the Castration Index. (Oops, another file opened on me lol.)
I Wonder how he can stand to be such a Lizard.
The fact that they are protesting at a top graduate business program rather than attending a top graduate business program says all you need to know about how they ended up in the situation they’re in.
Yes. It is necessary for every person in the U.S. to be above average.
Oh, but wait, that’s not good enough. It is every person’s own individual responsibility to be a member of the 1%ers.
I’d actually like to see that. Sounds like he might have to exert himself.
Boehner has been taking a low profile lately. The loathsome little creep Cantor has been front and center. I hope protestors follow him everywhere from now until next November.
Its the whining.
If you don’t want to put in the work then don’t piss and moan about the spoils that come with that hard work.
OK, can we guess what Cantor is going to say?
1. People are hurting b/c of Obama’s treatment of the banks
2. government needs to get out of the way of the banks.
3. Regulations are causing banks to lay people off!!!
4. Regulations are preventing banks from making loans to small business and getting this country going again!!
5. I get paid a lot of money by banks to lie to the little people!
that’s right…everyone in the US should become a hedge fund manager. After all, that’s all that’s left. Thanks for the career guidance.
Yep. That is its. only careers left…….
Take responsibility and quit blaming others for your own shortfalls.
The grow lights in the terrarium emit a radiant comfort and there is a subsidized supply of dead insects upon which to feed.
I’m just following the bankers’ auspicious lead. They can responsibility for their shortfalls too…
BTW, I’m doing just fine. thanks for your concern.
Holy shit, that’s funny.
The truest axiom in the US: Everyone has ultimate control over their own means of production and hyper-individualized destiny. Selah!
“House Majority Leader Eric Cantor will be giving a speech on income inequality … ”
Coolidge summary of speech: he’s for it, big-time.
You’re right. It is VERY hard work being born into a wealthy family.
You know what MBA stands for, for those of us with Ph.D.s?
Moneygrubbing Bogus Academics.
That’s right. If you weren’t born wealthy, that’s YOUR fault. Get off your lazy ass and go make a million$$$. It’s easy. Anybody who works hard can do it. Underprivileged….pshaw.
You forgot a BIG one.
6. Obamacare has put 1.2 million people out of work
I have decided that I hate Cantor even worse than Boehner and McConnell. I hope they hound him. I want to make it clear though, I don’t want some paparazzi on motorscooters to follow him into a tunnel.
Am I clear on that???
I’m sorry for that. I’m usually better behaved.
…”for it”????? He has the blueprints AND an upward “flow chart”.
Cantor is speaking at Gerald Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan on Monday, October 31 at 1:00 and Occupy Ann Arbor is planning to come out to protest in scary costumes: in honor of Cantor who is pretty scary. The protest is being billed as a Funeral for the Middle Class.
The first amendment only guarantees that the government cannot pass laws preventing you from exercising your right to speak your mind. It has nothing to do with the rights of private citizens to disagree with what you have to say.
Trolls never “get it”, that’s why they are trolls.
