Thursday, I participated in a ‘MIC CHECK’ confrontation with Arne Duncan, the US Secretary of Education, at a town hall meeting at Austin Community College. Duncan is criticized for many reasons, but he came under fire from Occupy Austin for his support of charter schools and privatization which puts teachers out of work, puts taxpayer money and our students in the hands of 1% corporations with little accountability.
Occupy AISD (a.k.a. Occupy Education) is one of our most effective working groups. They’ve engaged in amazing outreach to schools, teachers, parents, and activists. They led a successful rally earlier this month bringing many non-occupiers on the march. They’ve also had a real effect on our schools, supporting the efforts to oppose IDEA Charter that resulted in only 5 students asking to attend the controversial east side charter school.
I felt honored to support their efforts today with the help of four other occupiers who attended the town hall meeting. Here’s what our mic check sounded like:
Because we did not know how many we had present to support us, we read it more as a speech than a traditional call & response, but near the end you could hear students & others joining in. The crowd applauded and many came up afterwards to ask us questions or to thank us. As for Duncan himself, he’s obviously used to being mic checked and responded calmly with a stock answer about the importance of the “public-private partnership.” The campus police lined up but when we sat down again left us alone.
Later, during the question & answer session, the last question was a pointed one from another occupier:
After the meeting, we had a pleasant & positive chat with Brette Lea, a member of ACC’s Public Information & College Networking department. We talked about how the occupation supports efforts by colleges like ACC to educate the disadvantaged, but opposes the 1% infiltration of education. We also heard from Timothy John Tuten, Director of Special Projects for the US Department of Education. He thanked us for being nonviolent and urged us to contact him to share our concerns. But not everyone reacted calmly, as James explained in a brief interview:
Participating in such a successful action thrilled me — and then I got another thrill to see my video online at the Washington Post website.
If you’re coming to Austin for South by SouthWest (SXSW), be sure to check out Occupy Austin.

Great action – so good to see OccupyAustin deliver this message.
Nonie Darwish got mic checked at UNM, and the audience attacked. I guess the defenders of Israel are perhaps not used to criticism.

Thanks for the report and the action Kit!
Thanks for the diary Kit. Way-ta-go Occupy Austin!
Fantastic mic check, Kit! Thank you all!
Care to enlarge on the IDEA pressure? Truly amazing action by the Supt….
Duncan is an example of what’s gone wrong in high-level “circles” in society – and he’s also part and parcel of the Harvard Administration er the Obama Administration. Duncan should not be anywhere near public schools, and may have never actually set foot on one outside of the requirements of being a political appointee. In fact, he is probably horrified that he must soil himself in such ways.
There is no way such a figure could ever understand the meaning and purpose of the public education system. It was always something like a charity case for him.
Very cool.
Thanks for standing up and fighting for what’s right!
The public school system represents a big pile of public money to be looted by private looters (Charter School owners and Churches) and their con men facilitators like Obama and Duncan.
One big issue they didn’t count on with the Voucher system is causing a breakdown in the Private RELIGIOUS Schools.
The riff raff voucher kids are attending school with the rich kids. AND naturally, The wealthy parents don’t like it. Voucher kids comprise 40 percent of the student population in some cases.
This is why a big push for CHARTER Schools is going on right now.
Rich Kids will stay in the Church Schools and the Poor Kids will go the the Charter Schools.
u.s. spend on education is $600,000,000,000 +/- ??
(don’t know if that is only k-12, or, the whole enchilada)
the yuppie scum who DASHED people’s HOPE in the 90′s and after ’08
HOPE for health care,
HOPE for … NOT rich pig ass kissing?
the DLC New Dem Turd Way Yuppie Sell Out Scum of Geithner and Arne and Summers and Rahm … this is NOT about policy differences !!
they’re fucking sell outs. period.
possibly the only reasons they’re not LEADERS in the republican party are they’re not flat earth sexist bigots …
but, when we’re ALL working 72 hours a week for 4 bucks a month until we drop, will being gay or female or black really matter?
rmm
p.s. here is my leaflet against the Gate$ of the 1%, whose a$tro turff$ plague us in Seattle and Wishy-Warshy.
oops.

Thank you for this action and great report!
Won’t this action be exactly the type prohibited if Obama signs legislation now pending to prevent demonstrations near Secret Service protectees? Would these #Occupiers be federal felons under this proposed law?
Awesome! Thank you Kit OConnell. Thank you, OccupyAustin and Occupy AISD.
IDEA is a charter school which is threatening to come into east Austin, our poorest part of town, and open an experimental charter school, shutting down one of our most disadvantaged public schools in the process. Many teachers will be put out of work, and students will be buses all around town to other schools if they are not part of the grades which are starting in the pilot program. IDEA’s CEO doesn’t even have a degree in education.
We’ve been pressuring them by reaching out to area activists & helping them in their opt out efforts for students. We camped out twice to make sure area parents could speak up during the citizen comment section of board meetings, because the signup for citizens comment is coincidentally at the same time most parents are dropping their kids off at schools! We also mic checked in the board meeting.
Right now our main focus is going to be continuing to oppose the new STARR standardized tests. They no longer count for 15% of a student’s total grade, but students could still be held back from graduating a year if they perform poorly on them.
Arne Duncan is just another in a long line of Obama Administration officials who see their mission as pimps for the Banksters and Hedge Funds. Chicago School disciples, the champions of privatization, should be purged from our government.
Good For you….The Supt’s actions were very non-disclosed as well. Thanks.
Recommended!
Obama and the democrats have just furthered the Bush agenda to destroy public education system which in the past has been so successful for our country. Republicans buy the “No Child Left Behind” nonsense while democrats buy the “Invest in the future” nonsense. It is the same agenda no matter what it is called or which major party is pushing it.

Thank you. For me, the Obama adminstration’s fundamental, raw unfiltered beliefs about education were about two events close upon each other. In Feb. of 2011 Obama defended the bonuses of Jamie Dimon and Lloyd Blankfein, whose companies had to bailed out to somthing over $50+ billion dollars.
Less than a month later Obama applauded the mass firings of teachers. I thought I was one of the few who noticed, but FDL was on the case. Just as Obama means to drive a wedge into social security to hand it over to private elites, so with public schools.

Exactly, great comment! Duncan had virtually no relevant experience when appointed head of Chicago schools, and did nothing there to distinguish himself. He’s nothing more or less than a privatization pimp, which is what created his glorious career.
These private school 1%er kids don’t understand one of the things that America should be all about, a high-quality public education.
