LIVE: 99 Mile March Reaches Liberty Square (updated 7:25pmEST)

The 99 Mile March, led by Tom Morello’s Guitarmy, began in Philadelphia in honor of the National Gathering. They also marched to honor the great folk music hero Woody Guthrie’s 100th birthday.

After marching all the way to New York City over several days, the march from Staten Island has grown into a massive crowd that is now singing and dancing in Zucotti Park, a.k.a. Liberty Square, the birthplace of Occupy Wall Street.

Update 7:25pmEST Music, voices and eating in Liberty Square while police continue to watch. Feed is live again.

Update 6:35pm While celebrating being in Liberty Square, an occupier asked the crowd to help clean up the park. At least one more drummer is present.

Update 6:20pmEST More song and live music in Zucotti. Pizzas have arrived, reportedly ordered by someone in Amsterdam (global pizza solidarity!). We are now watching JRozLive.

Update 6:00pmEST @OccupyEye is offline and I have switched to a new streamer, @Codeframesf. Police presence is increasing. More food sharing is scheduled, and a brief standoff occurred when security discovered someone sleeping on a bench. It is relatively calm now but the NYPD mobile command center was spotted onsite.

Update 5:15pmEST 35-40 police arrived in attempt to threaten protesters food supply, but backed down after protesters locked arm around the food.

Update 5:08pmEST Liberty Square security is attempting to enforce a ban on food in the park as the crowd chants ‘Food Not Bombs!’ and attempts to distribute the food.

Update 5:00pm Mary of Occupy Olympia has been released from the ambulance.

Update 4:40pm Mary of Occupy Olympia, a nurse who marched with the group from Philadelphia, fainted and is being treated in an ambulence. 99 Mile Marchers are recounting memories of her journey and the help she gave.

Update 4:30pm EST NYPD on the scene is warning occupiers to clear the sidewalk or face arrest.

Update 4:15pm EST As musicians continue to play, there have been at least 2 arrests. Repeat offender NYPD Officer Winski arrested a drummer for drumming and at least one other occupier.

Proposed Sacramento ordinance would restrict actions outside City Hall

Strumming a ukulele on the front lawn of Sacramento’s historic City Hall on a sunny afternoon last week, Michael Hanson broke one proposed law after another.

He was making noise with something other than his voice. He had signs, a table and a chair. He was harming what’s left of the front lawn by, well, standing on it.

While city officials insist Hanson and his fellow Occupy Sacramento protesters were not the inspiration for the new guidelines, many of the proposed violations under debate are committed by Occupy members every day.

Under an ordinance to be considered by the City Council’s Law and Legislation Committee later this month, violators would be subject to fines of $250 to $25,000 for breaking laws set forth in the proposed “Use of the City Hall Facility” ordinance. Those who defy the rules would be guilty of misdemeanors.

The proposed rules range from common-sense behavior – littering would be prohibited – to actions that seem rather specific.

Helium balloons and confetti would not be allowed on City Hall grounds. Neither would fireworks, or drawing on the sidewalk with chalk. Banging on cowbells during the day, leaving items unattended and cooking on the property would be outlawed.

What happened to our country? Dancing, drumming, playing music at city hall — I want all these things to be allowed in the place I live. We have to turn this around somehow.
