Tonight I was at the OccuQueers meeting, Occupy Austin’s queer working group. With other members of Occupy, we’re preparing for the opening of the Texas Legislature in January (our state government only meets every 2 years). We’re writing letters to some newly elected queer legislators to ask them to support us, and offering our support to them if they take difficult stands that favor the 99%.
Our allies GetEqual TX shared this miniature documentary about the importance of gays in the Boy Scouts. I thought it’d make a bit of interesting evening viewing for the Watercooler set.
How are you? What’s on your mind? This is the latest open thread.

Boy scouting was a different thing back in my days of 60′s-70′s
I started young in Cub scouts. Moved on up to the local scout troop, where i started earning my badges. Back then it was all about how to survive and camping out. How to build things with nothing was a big draw for me. We had some strange scout leaders but none that ever proved to be abusive. Had one i could have picked for a mob member but i wont go there. Some of the kids i was with could have been gay but we would never have known as all were blind to that. And blind was how it went for the duration.
I went on to be a life scout almost earning my eagle badge. But i became a girl scout instead.
Yes i joined the girl scouts, after being in the boy scouts, till i was an explorer with a order of the arrow double sash. I Gave up my eagle because there was no badge for loving cute girls.
I got hired as a handyman to a girl scout camp in New Hampshire at the age of 15. At the age of 16 i moved there permanent. Honest i am not gay,but i think every one else thought i was. I had the time of my life for three years. Scouting builds character.
Now i know that zero people had the experience i had. And i still have my card from the girl scouts that classifies me as an “active adult’ i KID YOU NOT.
So i think today most parents would not want me teaching their children which mushrooms were good to pick.
Scouting can be fun.
I was never a scout so thanks for sharing your experience. it really does seem valuable for everyone (allowed to be) involved!
