After Sunday’s events at City Hall, I’m thinking about what free speech means. Free speech is tents in public spaces, sharing food in places where they want to pretend there aren’t hungry people, and sometimes free speech is loud, angry, even aggressive. It isn’t polite, but I loved watching Occupy Chicago chant “Shit’s Fucked Up and Bullshit!” There’s a place for calm speech, for petitions, letters, even silent vigils. There’s also a place for righteous, nonviolent anger.

Whether you do it silently or loudly, when you take the streets or public places remember:
