The "Betrayal of Democrats" list presented by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC) must be extended to include those weasels who voted "Aye" on H R 3962 after voting "Yea" on the Stupak Amendment.
Members of the Democratic Caucus like Rep. Bart Stupak (MI-01) and Rep. Jim Cooper (TN-05) did not betray Democrats any less with their votes on H R 3962 and the Stupak Amendment. And they must not be allowed to get away with poisoning H R 3962 just before they voted in favor of it.
Rep. Bart Stupak has highjacked this historic opportunity to achieve real health care reform by trying to use it as a way to impose his beliefs in a matter of conscience on millions of Americans. This betrayer of Democrats hopes to force women into a position in which they would have to choose between voluntarily surrendering their constitutionally protected reproductive rights and having access to affordable health insurance.
On page 50, the 2008 Democratic Party Platform clearly and explicitly states:
The Democratic Party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman’s right to choose a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay, and we oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right.
Rep. Stupak does not have the right to impose his beliefs in this matter on others, especially not by trying to use this much needed reform as a way to deny as many women as he can their reproductive rights.
The position of the Democratic Party is that women have constitutionally protected rights in this matter of conscience, and that no one has the right to deny them these rights, directly or indirectly.
Rep. Stupak has betrayed Democrats across the country on H R 3962 and should not be allowed to get away with it.
Others, like Rep. Cooper, have betrayed Democrats time and again. This time, these betrayers of Democrats like Rep. Jim Cooper want to go home to their Democratic constituents and say that they voted in favor of H R 3962, when in fact they poisoned it first by having voted in favor of the Stupak Amendment just moments earlier.
Rep. Cooper has already danced around his vote on the Stupak Amendment, proudly saying in interviews that he was one of the few smart ones who understood the true import of the amendment, while simultaneously hiding that fact that he voted in favor of it (see here):
In the Rules Committee’s explanation of the Stupak amendment, they said flat out that the Stupak amendment codifies the Hyde amendment. Most people didn’t realize that that’s the description from the Stupak amendment’s advocates, not necessarily the judgment of the Rules Committee’s staff. Like many things in Congress, lots of folks did not pay attention to the details. It looked like it just continued current law. But this turned out to be very important.
What a shameless, slippery weasel. It’s not enough for him that the devil in the details was successfully hidden by the bullshit explanation of the amendment made available by the Rules Committee? Now he fucking wants to gloat about it, too?
Rep. Stupak has said that ‘there will be hell to pay’ if his amendment is removed.
No, he’s got it backward.
There will be hell to pay if his amendment is not removed.

Bet if you went through the whole platform you could find where ObamaRahma isn’t following it either.
If the Catholic church wants to write legislation we need to move immediately to remove their tax exempt status. You cannot do both in this country. Stupak sent his amendment to the Catholic Bishops for approval. I say we have a separation of state and church that needs he needs to abide. I call for immediate taxation of the Catholic church.
If You notice year by year Churches. and their members are increasingly trying to force their beliefs on others.
They have found that using politics, is the way to get people who oppose you to be forced to live by Your rules.
Stacking the Courts is bad enough, but they have stacked the Government.
The Catholic church should have no credibility because of it’s past actions, but still sticks it’s two cents in. They have got away with it in Italy for hundreds of years, and now think the US is ripe for them.
We should be able to see why the forefather thought to mention the division of Church and State.
Stupak was always mild, quiet over the years representing Northern Michigan. He picked this calculated opportunity to come out against women’s rights and hold health care hostage. Wonder why? He trashed the Dems and women. He works for C street and the Bishops now- painfully obvious with his traitorous actions. Pay attention Michigan women- he is not representing you.
I was listening to Trudy Lieberman (no relation to Short Ride) of the Columbia Journalism Review yesterday morning. The more I hear about the HCR bill the less I like it, even without Stupak. I wish I knew what was in the Senate bill that Reid’s going to bring to the floor but with all the back door deals and machinations going on in that embarrassing body I’m not at all hopeful that anything meaningful will come out of it. The bottom line appears to be an enrichment of the insurance companies at the expense of the American people. Mandates will only increase bankruptcies due to the costs of medical care.
What the Democrats need is a good Savonarola.
Seconded Diary!
Very good question
I think the Church thinks more people will start going to church now that unemployment is up this gives them Clout they have not had in years. But are Church attendance numbers going up? Are the number of Hard Core Catholics going up?
