Good morning all. I wanted to provide a space today for the Dinerzens to get the band back together, so to speak. I miss you firepups, and on most days I don’t see many of the same faces in the Roundup thread. fatster has been kind enough to offer us space in the comments there, but not many have taken that offer.
I wanted to invite you all in, to make this thread today a place to touch base and catch up. I know many have suggested making a new regular hangout, something in Richard’s honor, but I don’t think I’m the guy for the job. Just wanted a one-off kind of thread for us to meet and say hey.
So here it is. Coffee’s on, water’s on for tea, and I’m going to be parked over here in the corner booth. Hope folks show up.

Good Morning, Kris. Thanks for this. I think everyone misses Richard and The Diner. Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone.
We’re good, you and I, aren’t we? There were some comments added the other morning at PUAC that gave me pause and I just wanted to check.
Thanks, Kris. This is great! I had offered to do this last week and got a lukewarm response — possibly too soon after SD’s passing and everyone was in shock. I have sure been missing the Diner. I noticed several Dinerzens on Attaturk’s thread and wondered if that’s where we were going to hang out.
Good morning. I will have another cup of tea!
Lol. Good morning ((demi)).
We are more than good. I actually left that thread open on my laptop, so when I woke my machine up this morning I refreshed and read through to the end. While I appreciate the misplaced concern from a couple of folks, I certainly wasn’t offended by your comments. You made a single, spot-on, well-meaning observation, which I embraced in my response. I’m not sure why people felt the need to ‘stand up’ for me, or something.
Anyway, as I said above, we are more than good. No worries. I’m glad you’re here.
Good Morning, Molly.
How’d your sewing project go yesterday?
Well, Good Morning All!
Let’s see how many show up.
My story of the day: I decided to pour a mixture of boiling water, BBQ sauce, dry rub, and pork fat on my foot. Well, I didn’t really DECIDE to do that, but the roaster pan wobbled and that spilled out. 2nd degree burns on the top of my foot, the blister went from one side of my foot to the other and reached a height of 1.5″ before it burst. Putting on shoes was painful.
Boxturtle (So if you see me in my booth with only socks, please forget the “no Shoes, etc”)
Good morning to you msmolly.
I saw your offer in one of the threads a while back, and the same thing had been on my mind. I think (I certainly don’t know) that Jane would have room for another morning thread on the front page. It’s something that someone would probably have to reach out to her about.
I don’t have the time to commit to doing something like this every morning, or I would email Jane and try to start it up.
Oh No! Did you see a doctor? That sounds very painful indeed.
Holy crap dood!
I pulled one of those a month or so back, draining a large pot of pasta. Just slopped a bunch of boiling water on to my foot before properly directing it into the sink.
Sounds like your damage is way worse, though. Hope you’re okay.
Whew! Thanks.
I could commit to hosting one morning a week. We’d have to figure out how to coordinate a rotating hosting. But, I’m up for it.
I normally hung out there until the Diner opened. The morning crowd seemed to be migrating there and i was considering asking if that post could be left up until 9am est or so.
Lot’s of companies seem to be taking obamacare out on their workers. Wonder if there are any telling the stockholders that their return will be 6% rather than 6.05%.
Boxturtle (Is this going to be a diner, a food truck, or a back alley haunt?)
I could certainly commit to one morning per week during the work week. If we could get a couple others on board you, msmolly and I might be able to make this work.
Didn’t go, yet. My DIL suggested I make a robe for my granddaughter’s 7th birthday “with her name embroidered on it.” Now DIL does not sew and has no concept of what’s involved (she thought it would be easy for me to reupholster very long window-bench cushions for her a year ago). She’s a sweetie and I love her, but about sewing she is clueless.
But I have a friend who’s going to do the embroidery because she has a special machine that does it, so we just have to pick out the thread. I’m making PJs too.
There’s a really bitchin’ place here in Austin called the Magnolia Cafe.
I think I’ll fly that flag for the day.
I have missed you, BoxTurtle! Along with the others, of course. With respect to Fatster, who does such a great roundup, it wasn’t the same.
No. I HOPE I won’t have to do so. Neosporian(sp) and basic wound care seem to be doing the trick. Just watching carefully for infection.
Boxturtle (And screaming when the occasion requires it)
OWEEE! I’m sure you could get away with no shoe on that foot for a couple of weeks, as long as you don’t get snow.
I remember the reupholster request. I can still see in my minds eye, you stuffed into your pt cruiser with those cushions.
“Sorry, we’re open”??? LOL, that’s hilarious.
Ya know, I could commit to one day a week as week as well. If folks don’t mind a set of links with a more sciencey bent.
How weird is Boxturtle? The magazines I subscribe to are Discover, Scientific American, and National Geographic.
Boxturtle (Though it sometimes pleases me to consider I know more about Quarks than I do about Snooki)
Sounds about right. Make sure you let the burn air out sometimes.
Yeah, it was pretty funny. But I was able to get them to the upholstery guy (DIL paid for it, of course) and in the process discovered the guy and wound up having my 20 yr. old kitchen chairs reupholstered. I took them to him two at a time in the PT. Love that car.
I would love a set of science links each week. I would probably focus my stuff more on grassroots activism and education. Those are my particular passions at the moment.
Sounds like we’ve got 4. That’s almost 5, if my fingers aren’t lying to me…
Okay, that works. Looking at their menu, I’d say if you’re not a fire eater you might best stick to coffee. :-)
Boxturtle (Respects any restaurant that mentions Serranos on their menu)
Sounds good. Rotating hosts with rotating themes. Science Monday, Comfort Tuesday, Domestic Wednesday, not specifically that, but you know what I’m getting at.
Man, that sounds painful. Jeez, hope it gets to healing.
Hey, I finally watched Blazing Saddles last night (rented from Netflix). I didn’t like it all that much, but discovered the source of a lot of references I’d seen and didn’t “get” — Charlie Pierce used a Harvey Korman photo when he’d write about Denny Rehberg, for example. And my son used to say, “We don’t need no steenkin’(whatever)” and I didn’t know that was from the movie.
Why, thanks! Around here, the only people who miss me are my pets and they get over that as soon as they’re fed.
My problem with commenting on the roundup is that I have to read most/all of the links first. By then, it’s scrolled. Fatster does too good a job of link collection, I can’t recall the last time my local paper scooped her.
Boxturtle (See what being Obsessive/compulsive does to a person?)
Yeah, I could take one morning a week. Not sure what “theme” I’d use. Don’t want to step on Fatster by posting news articles. Hmmm. Have to give it some thought.
But then, we could borrow Suzanne’s theme and just say “what’s on your mind today?” and let the discussion flow. I’m sure someone would chime in with something interesting.
Hey, C-S! Wow!, love seeing your diary front paged at night the other one. Yeah!
Hi, got any seats left, I just got here. I could do one (1) day a week, and would be glad to be the foreign press edition.
I think a ‘what’s on your mind today’ thread is perfect for a Monday or a Friday.
I’m not a doctor, nor do I play one on teevee, but I’m not sure slathering ointment on it is wise for a burn. Seems to me it has to have air.
You might just give your doc a call and ask. Prolly don’t have to see him/her but could be told what to do for it.
Good morning Ruth. Thanks for volunteering. That makes 5.
Does this sound good to everyone?
Okay, I claim science Mondays. With the understand that nothing is really offtopic and I can post about GOPers, pets, and cooking should I so choose.
Boxturtle (Let’s see if we can get 5 people who can collectively do half the job SD did)
Well, then, let me take Monday. Actually, if someone wants Monday, I could take Friday. Really doesn’t matter. We could just let it happen in the MyFDL space and see if it takes off, and then see about front-paging it if it does.
Didn’t see this before I hit Submit. I can take Friday. And if a theme occurs to me because of something I’ve noticed in the world, I can use it. Otherwise “what’s on your mind” will work.
That would be great. I don’t routinely read the foreign press (except Glenzilla).
I had also thought of “what are the pundits saying today” that would include links to some blogs like Greenwald, Charlie Pierce, Dean Baker, etc. — my regular stops.
Whoopee! I think What’s On You Mind is perfect for Friday.
Ruth, I’m so glad you’ll take the Foreign Press. I could do Family and Home issues. Maybe, I’ll think on it more. Kris, do you want to do Activism Monday?
If you don’t like blazing saddles, it’s because you were brought up properly and you should hold your parents responsible!
The “no steenking badges” reference is from yet a different movie that i don’t remember. I think it was a spaghetti western.
Harvy managed several cheap feels on Madeline during the rehearsals for the scene after new show number. He claimed it improved her acting when they did the take.
Boxturtle (How could anybody not like it?!?)
I think I’ll let BT lay claim to Mondays.
I could do Tuesdays, although if we want to start this week, I’ve seemingly had my shot :)
About burns, my memory of whatever medical advice I’ve had is that when the underlying skin is exposed, infection is the big danger. These days, I go online
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burn
I’m keeping my shoes off as much as possible. So far, nobody here has commented.
Boxturtle (Too polite or undercaffinated. Could be either)
Thanks Kris, here for a short time before chores.
I almost commented Saturday, that the “misplaced,” concern and those few commenters had likely missed prior bonds of friendship and trust that had obviously been established between you and demi, so to someone out of the loop of the diner or PUAC would not understand the exchange they were slightly offended by. Thanks for mentioning it this morning.
Do you mind doing it tomorrow? I could do Family stories on Wednesday or Thursday. Ruth, do you have a preference?
Sometimes I just don’t get a reaction like the rest of the world expects, and remember seeing ‘It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World’ completely unamused, so whatever floats your boat when it comes to laughs.
Good morning all. Nice job Kris and thanks for thinking of this.
Sure, I’ll take the leftovers! since at nonquixote’s breakfast table, that seems idyllic.
(anyone who doesn’t understand this, go to attaturk’s post and see what the menu chez nonquixote was this a,m.)
Kris! OMG. Did we just figure this out or what? Amazing. When Molly first suggested this, I was still shocked behind thinking and I thought it would be challenging to come up with a schedule, but look. We did it? Build it and they will come.
I rarely find that sort of broad, “in your face” humor funny (the “beans” scene was something my 10 year old grandkids would find hilarious). It was pretty non-PC for 1974, I guess. And I confess to being confused by the ending, which wound up on the movie set. But it did edumacate me a bit.
Teasure of the Siera Madre
I’ll do Wednesday and you do Thursday?
Well, Wednesday is Hump Day, and that kind of goes with the family thing. (Ducking and running)
Good morning nonq! Glad you could join us.
I’m amused sometimes at the caped crusaders on blogs who stand up for folks that don’t need standing up for.
If those folks had bothered to read all of the comments and put the conversation in context, rather than just knee-jerk reacting to a single comment at the beginning, things could have gone a lot smoother.
For what it’s worth, I thought Ruth managed to craft a wonderful thread that inspired a great conversation about a very touchy subject. I saw a lot of healing of the rifts that had been growing in our community leading up to the election. I, for one, am glad I was able to safely speak my mind and my heart.
I never found humor in the Marx brothers, and any laugh out of people getting hurt was just not to my taste. But I laughed my way through ‘Blazing Saddles’, and ‘Cat Ballou’.
OK I am in for Fridays. I can start this week.
Only thing I find onerous at MyFDL is no “show text” function, so you have to scroll back to follow the conversation. But thankfully no more nested comments.
We can also have switch hitters. Maybe Nonquixote can help out too. Do we need a common name to start with? Magnolia Cafe: Science Menu or something?
You’ve raised quite the Organizer. Far out.
One more suggestion: we need to give the new Diner a name, and then use the appropriate tags. I had suggested “Richard’s Diner” but perhaps someone has a better idea for a name. I like the idea of a continuation of Lakeside Diner, and I suppose we could use that. Or not.
Thoughts??
Why, thank you kind sir, it turned out well because we have good people here.
And Thursday suits me fine, in HS it was somewhat related to being gay, never figured that one out, so I’ll take on any onus. But spuds is going to come out of the shadows and tell me I’m not qualified, I suspect.
Heh, then we’ll make him contribute a day! Doesn’t have to be a strict rotation!
What occurred to me is “Never.Give.Up”
But all the others suit me fine.
As far as the gathering place Kris has initiated here, I had always thought spot on best would have been, “Mornings with Margaret.” Her daily input at Attaturk’s is worthy a show of her own.
He is a good guy.
Nice thinking. (waves at spudtruckowner)
If we all dump email addresses here I can shoot an email off to everyone with a solid schedule and we can start this off.
Now all we need is a recurring title or central theme that will draw the eye to the diary list each morning…
Actually, we can take days as volunteered for above, but if someone has something on his/her mind and wants to post it on a day that “belongs” to someone, they should just feel welcome to do so. Do we all have each others’ email addresses? I think I do, not sure.
I think you have mine, but it’s msmollynd AT the gmail thingy.
Shall I email Ellie and ask her about sending out email addy from each to each for this project, and pass on to her what we’re doing?
The ending was typical Brooks. He frequently breaks that 4th wall.
Boxturtle (10yr old grandchildren & 50 yr old programmers seem to have something in common)
Oh, I did fix breakfasts, bacon, sausage, eggs and cakes at a diner during summer through part of HS. Kept the coffee machines humming, bussed tables, counters and took orders from the pre-opening hours clientele that knew that the back door was open before the official front-door was unlocked.
Okay, I’m drawing a total blank. Ellie?
Ah, thank you! I hate it when i can’t remember a reference like that. I’d have remembered eventually.
Boxturtle (You’d have given Randolph Scott 24 hours, wouldn’t you?)
The Never Give Up Cafe?
I have everyone’s emails except BoxTurtle.
Ellie Elliott, one of the FDL editors.
How about Lakeside Memorial Diner? We’ll keep a photo of SD by the register.
Boxturtle (And a cat at the greeters station. To heck with the Board of health!)
The man has a mind like a steel trap.
Sorry, that’s Ellie Elliott, who does the Talking Heads roundup and PUAC requests for us that have been doing it.
That’s too sad for me. Sorry. But, I’ll go with what everyone else wants.
I still like The Never Give Up Cafe.
I like it.
Actually, “We doan need no steekin’ badges” is first from “Treasure of the Sierra Madre”
When you watch Brooks’ movies, he is stealing from a lot of differnet sources.
I can be reached at boxturtle at woh dot rr dot com.
Be patient with the first communication. I run an AGGRESSIVE spam filter and depending on your headers I may have to whitelist you.
I’m figuring on beginning next Monday.
Boxturtle (Unless some nice mod comes along, we’ll have to post at myfdl and hope for a frontpage)
It’s asking for explanations, in my mind. But then I am into self promotion! (joke)
How about a name suggestion that is not a physical place as much as an all encompassing theme, with a breakfast flair???
One of the orders I took each morning at the grill was, “OVER EASY,” suggesting an approach to sharing or discussion that was exercised most mornings with Richard.
Randolph Scott (in very hushed tones with angelic music)
Just sent you one.
If it’s okay with all five of us, if so, say aye, I will make a list and share will just you five.
*waves at demi*
Now you have BT’s email address!
Can you send an email out and include all those that volunteered to contribute? We can solidify the schedule and then maybe Ruth can take it to Ellie? See what FDL thinks about front-paging?
Over Easy: Science , or Over Easy: Activism , or Over Easy: What’s On Your Mind….
I like it. I like it a lot.
I agree.
So, If Kris can do tomorrow, I think we are up and running.
Yep. Will do.
I was going to say We don’t need no steeking Ellie, but I lover her and we do need her. :O (Hi Mz Ellie.)
Over Easy: whatever theme.
I’m loving it like mad.
I can certainly do tomorrow. I’ll target 7:00am Central for the post to publish.
So do I. Over Easy; outside agitators! okay, you knew I couldn’t be serious for ten minutes running, didn’t you all?
Works for me. I have no access to that addy here at work, but I’ll respond this evening.
Boxturtle (Already thinking of possible links. Whatever shall I use as a topOfPost Photo?)
And, I totally agree about what you said about Ruth’s PUAC being a time a space where some healing could occur.
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could get some more voices here and get some more healing to happen?
I’m game. And Ellie is very game. No, gamey is not going to be said. Especially where we have our breakfasts.
That time works for me. I’ll do it for 6:00 PT. Same.
I do too.
Science Over Easy. Hard Boiled Science. Science: Scrambled, with Cheese.
Boxturtle (Still want a cat a the greeters station, though)
OOOH I really like that idea!! I vote for “over easy”
Nobody needs to be an adult for more than 10 minutes at a time. Unless they’re a surgeon or something.
Cheshire cat; )
8am EST works for me.
Boxturtle (Mom would be shocked to find me a morning person now)
So, you’re good with me sharing your email addy with the five who have agreed to host?
I think a common photo at the top will help with the continuity. How ’bout we find a nice cat photo?
I haven’t posted at MyFDL for quite awhile. Is the backstage clock there set for Pacific (i.e., FDL time)? Do we have to make time zone adjustments?
Jinx! Hot chocolate?
My favorite doctor found a funny bone every time he cut into anyone. And wearing that mask helps.
Sure. I think most of them have it already (but now they do since I just put it upthread). Ruth sent me hers.
So tomorrow morning will be An Introduction… Over Easy.
I’ll post a general introduction to the concept, introduce the various contributors who have volunteered here today, a handful of links, and an invitation for general discussion.
Yes, we’re all Californians now.
You guys. I’m sitting here with tears, again.
Ain’t no mountain high enough, ain’t’ no river wide enough…
Since we already have Pull Up Your Cat, why not find a nice creative commons diner picture and just use that? That is where Ellie might help us. I know SD had diner photos on some of his threads.
Good. And thanks.
I’ll just make a schedule, to reiterate what we’ve agreed upon and share all the addys.
Your ideas really was wonderful and now lookie here.
I will throw that up to her, also.
Stellar! And now I do have to get outta this chair and on with my morning. I will check back in awhile to see what’s transpired.
And everyone RECOMMEND this diary so it stays near the top for awhile.
Yes, that works.
Right you are.
Thanks for the reminder, Moll. Laterz.
Crap, now I want to do a new demi icon. I’ve had that one with my mom and me for far too long.
Ruth, you’re not really going to throw up on Ellie, are you?
I’m taking off too. Kris(Fuckin’)A!!! You’re are da man of da hour.
Thanks demi and Kris,
The memorial cafe and stuff puts too much onus on it. “Hashing,” it out in an easy manner (getting silly).
Each diarist can attach a small byline at the beginning of their piece, not necessarily onto the title, or at some point a common byline might emerge.
What goes on in email will stay in email.
It’s always going to be me with the giggle isn’t it? good thing I never attached importance to Serious manners.
Gots to giggle.
Really going now.
Use one of your glamor shots. Those were really nice!
Out for realz. *poof*
ANd, ps, should I send Ellie the schedule as well. I mean one list.
Well done Kris and Dinerzens. Our beloved SoDrag would be very proud.
Good idea, why not just do that, and she may also get back with ideas of her own.
Ellie gets on later in the day, just so no one expects immediate reply to all this.
:)
He was with us on this, this morning, doncha think? I’m getting teh tears again.
They’re reading at the Rainbow Bridge now.
And now I do have to get a few things done, too, thanks for good company, have a good day.
paying work is calling, later pups.
Thanks again for coming by this morning. Sincerely.
Will do. I’ll send out the list later today.
Hugs, hon. Just love the Over Easy. Well done, bro.
The more I think about Over Easy, the more I like it.
I’m gonna lurk here for the rest of the day or so and see if this stays as active as the Diner did.
Boxturtle (So many EGGciting puns, so little time before Monday)
I’m overwhelmed by the response so far. I got an itch this morning for the company of the Diner crowd and had to scratch it. I didn’t know that this would come from it.
Thanks to all of you. I’m working on tomorrow’s post as we speak :)
Have been busy this morning, in and out. Did all the weekdays get a postnhoster?
Over Easy is an excellent suggestion.
My two cents: Keep it The Diner,OUNM, Speaks volumes to SD. But it’s not mine to name. Never. Give. Up.
Yeah, pretty impressive. Must have been some pent-up demand.
Boxturtle (Eggcellent)
135 comments already! there is an empty hole, a yearning to fill it. Thanks, KrisA for this pop-up Diner. back to read comments now
Nevermind. Move along. Nothing to see here.
Did you get a postnhoster for every day?
keeping this thread open, will look back from time to time today. well done, Kris&Co.
even the most hardboiled heart would melt at the outpouring of enthusiasm and ideas and affection for SD.
;-)
by the way, Marian’s link to Krugman mich appreciated! krugman spot on about the incoherent deficit scolds. one small quibble, Ryan not a fiscal icon…just a con.
Judd Gregg babbling spin on msnbc this morning. Time to watch Love It or List It with Hillary.
Though I cannot commit to a diary, just loaded the truck for a few day’s of work, the hatching, rebirth (of a short lived institution, Richard’s diner), egg theme persisted and a byline that might work, silly as it might appear:
OVER EASY…
Essentially Eggsistential,
Use it, play with it, hitting the road.
Late to the thread. Went to my children’s Veteran’s Day program
at their elementary school. My 6th grade son played “Taps”.
The tears in my eyes were for Southern Dragon whose compassion affected us all.
Mornings are a hard scramble for me, always was late to the Diner. Just glad to see the enthusiasm and the volunteer brigade lined up.
Nice to have ya’ll’s vibes in the air, even if the booths are empty when I get here.
Thanks for stopping in :)
Hey folks. I just went an email out.
Oh, good grief. Sent out an email. Der!
So…..you’re from N Dakota?
Do they say Der in ND?
Daa.
I didn’t realize der was a derivation of Da.
I’m hiding in the back. Spread the word that the Diner is reopening, under new management, but with the same menu as before!
Boxturtle (Reminds me: Somebody should cover Marx in the Morning)
Daa, en N Da Ko Ta, der iz der daa.
she’s not, but I yam….
Hi, Prairie. Isn’t this eggziting?
Just my 2 cents, as I am generally a lurker. But I vote for Lakeside Diner, est. by SouthernDragon (with year or establishment). The Dinerzens, with their quirky orders and booth preferences established such a warm environment for sharing conversations or just companionship.
Did every day get covered?
I was lucky enough to live in Grand Forks for a year. The elderly couple next door were so adorable to my wife and I. They spoke backward to what we were used to. Like being asked, “When born you were?” Wonderful people.
Yes. Your regular contributors will be myself, msmolly, demi, Ruth, and BT.
i presume you didn’t live in GF in 1997!
Thanks. I can fill in if ever needed.
I just tried calling you back.
No, 72. That couple were in their 80′s when I met them. Born they were, right there. Is that the year 310 Walnut St. was under three feet of water?
I have a poster rolled up somewhere of a snow drift around a fence post and the caption says: Ski North Dakota ! A favorite of mine.
Stoopit work is seriously interfering with my blogging abilities today.
Yeppers. We have Kris, Box Turtle, Me, Ruth and Molly. But, if you’re awantin’ to be part of this, I mentioned up there abit, that we could have switch hitters, or is it pinch hitters? I’m rotten baseball terms, we could always use some helpers. Get my email from Kris. (Did you like my Kris(fucking)A? Thought you might. :)
Hi. I’m so late getting here, but judging from this and how popular the Diner was, there would be a market.
A market? That’s funny. Just friends trying to get together to share news.
Are you in that professional marketing field? Tell the truff.
Just dropped by and saw your comment. I was just using “market” in a generic sense, e.g. a marketplace of ideas.
city was flooded, downtown under water…and on fire. Yikes!
I think this is great! I would occasionally welcome a pinch hitter for Friday. For example, I’m going to be traveling over Thanksgiving weekend and it will be really difficult to host on Black Friday. I can probably put something up but I will have to do it in advance and won’t be there to participate.
I understand the sentiment of naming it “Lakeside Diner, est. by…” but my own thought is that “Over Easy” carries the Diner forward with a new title, and the format will be different. Sorta like Pull Up Your Cat carries on Caturday, but with a new twist, as does PUAC with rotating hostesses. Just my $0.02.
Thanks for stopping by otchmoson,
Whatever happens with this idea, it looks like the start of something Richard, SD, would be proud of. A cooperative effort started with an informal consensus agreement among virtual friends and volunteers. Thanks for de-lurking and don’t be a stranger. Introduce yourself as you feel comfortable. Partners are invaluable.
My guess is that the old Diner must have been at least an octagon for the prevalence of available corner booths, though.
Coolieo! :)
Hey demi,
Great to be gainfully employed for a few hours, today. A few more hours on the near horizon, too.
Do I have to go out and buy one of those little waitress outfits? I think Molly and I joked about this with Richard when he first opened the Diner.
We’ll all do it together. What a team.
Plain, generic white aprons were all we ever had at the place I worked. White shirts, black pants, comfortable supportive shoes. Oh and the ever stylish soda jerk paper hats.
State sanitation inspectors always phoned ahead back then. “Break out the hats, kitchen crew.” Ha!
This is awesome. You folks are the best.
OMG, you are so cute. I was in a play once, in high school, wherein I played a prison matron. This was a’68, or there abouts, where I wore a white dress shirt, a mid-knee straight navy skirt, nylons and heels.
So many of the guys told me just how much they liked that outfit on me.
I was 17.
Have a wonderful evening, Sir.
Finally checking in today. I’ve been thinking of the Dragon’s Lair, but….
Over Easy rocks way much. I love it. I’m soooo glad this is happening. It’s what democracy and community really are!
Big hug and attaboy for Kris and attagirls and boys for the volunteer hosts and wannabees.
I am so thrilled to see this post and read all the comments.
nonq, i called adelbert’s brewery yesterday, the makers of the flyin’ monks beer and they’re only distributing in texas so far. as the owner said, they want to stabilize texas before they start out of state. i paid $12.50 one place and $13.99 another place for a 750 ml bottle. they’re only making kegs and big bottles so far, but they plan to expand to smaller bottles.
if you must have a bottle, you could send me $ for it and shipping and i could send you one. or, you could wait til texas is stabilized.
or, come on down, the guest room is comfortable and texas weather in the winter beats the far far north.
cup o’chai, please. a long day, nice to find the diner still open. better make it decaf…
Wow! Skipping straight to the bottom:
Kris, I guess you got your wish…182 comments. Obviously dinerzens have been waiting for a place to “show up.” Really sorry I’ve been offline all day until now.
Now back up to skim thru and see who came by. Kind of you to set up the dining room today.
From a state whose citizens consume more beer per capita than many, thanks, but I’ve got plenty to try yet in my own neck of the woods.
Travel budget needs to be reserved for better economic times and I have distant kin who are owed visits. I might just prefer my winter where people are more practiced at driving in the winter weather road conditions, GW. ;-) A good evening to you.
Thank you again to everyone for coming in. When I threw this diary up this morning on a whim I could never have anticipated this response. I’m signing off for the night. I’ll see you all in the morning.
you did good, Kris
the rare moments when we have winter weather road conditions it is best to assume no one knows how to drive on them (including myself).
Having read thru – throwing in my two cents on the name:
As always, I have mixed feelings. I miss the Lakeside Diner terribly, and wish it could return…but it wouldn’t be the same without its inimitable founder. And I, too, sorta feel like “Richard’s Memorial Diner” would be too sad…although at first I favored something like it.
I’m still catching myself…less often than a week ago, but still…thinking of saving something that Richard would be interested in knowing, and then having that moment of “no, it can’t be true!” followed by the sadness of knowledge that, yes, it is true.
So—trying to sort out complex feelings — I think “Over Easy” is a great name, and I’ll look forward to it. Not being a natural morning person, most mornings that I’m up early it’s because I gotta be somewhere at an early hour, and thus can’t get here. But I will sure try.
Great work, Kris, plus demi, Ruth, msmolly, and BoxTurtle.
LOL! Yep. On those rare occasions, I stay off the road. Period.
