Good morning everyone, and welcome to our brand new daily feature Over Easy.

Hungry For Some Over Easy Links & Chat?
As many of you know, we recently lost a dear and valued friend, activist, inspiration, and front page contributor here at the Lake. Richard de Berry, aka Southern Dragon, was many things. A wonderful friend. A staunch defender of his fellows. A strong and just activist. A thinker. A gentle and good soul. He has been commemorated well here by others, and I have no wish to elicit further tears and sorrow, so I’ll move along.
I bring up Richard only to segue into an explanation of our new project. Richard was responsible each day, Monday through Friday, for the Lakeside Diner, a collection of newsworthy links and a meeting place for many of us online denizens to gather and start the day. Since Richard’s passing we have surely missed him, but have also missed the space that he provided us to come together and be as one before going out into the world to face the day. I feel this space is a part of Richard’s legacy, and I wish to continue it.
In the spirit of togetherness and community that FDL has fostered in us, I and others came together yesterday and came up with a plan. A new space, similar to the Lakeside Diner, for us to meet and share links, break bread, and be merry. Through our conversation this concept emerged: Over Easy.
Without further ado, your regular contributors will be: Myself, msmolly, demi, Ruth Calvo, and BoxTurtle. Others have offered their services, and will surely be worked into a rotation as we iron out the details.
We will cover a variety of topics, all of us with a particular specialty or theme. Posts will include links to relevant articles, videos, etc., and an invitation for open discussion. Off topic is safe, and even encouraged. Posts will go up Monday through Friday at 9am Eastern, 6am Pacific.
Please bear with us as we pilot this new ship out of the harbor and into open seas and calm water. It’s our maiden voyage, so there will surely be some hiccups along the way.
I’m going to focus on local activism and education. I like the grassroots stuff and the teach-our-kids stuff, so that will be my cup of tea. Here is your first batch of links (please pardon the lack of content. Short notice, work in the real world, my dog ate my links, insert other generic excuses here):
- An on-the-ground report from Staten Island by Joanne Stocker, Kenneth Lipp, and Dustin Slaughter. These fearless activists, of Team Occupy Your Mom fame, spent 3 days in Staten Island in the immediate aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.
- Austin School District cancels UT play about same-sex penguin parents.
- Op-ed from The LA Times about for-profit universities preying on Veterans. The exploitation of the GI Bill to turn a profit is infuriating.
I’ll close as a better man than me always did – Namaste. Never. Give. Up.

Good morning. I’ll have two eggs over easy and a side of hash browns.
P.S. I thought we were aiming for 8:00 EST?
Good morning :) When did it post? I put 8:00 in the publish thingy.
Good morning Kris, Mmolly and fellow dinerzins.
Thanks for posting.
Good morning JClausen.
Thank you for coming in.
I caught the organizing thread late yesterday but and could hardly
wait to get back to the diner.
It posted at 8:00 (I had to search on your name to find it) but your post says
Good morning. I’ve been looking for a photo we can use. Don’t know if we want a pic of a diner, a plate of eggs over easy, or let whomever’s hosting pick a photo.
Thank Kris for the postnhost. So glad that you and the crew decided to “put the band back together.”
Oh. Got it.
I changed it in the body of the post because demi had mentioned she wanted them to go up at 6 Pacific. That would mean 8 my time, 9, on the east coast.
I wanted to add a pic of eggs over easy to this post, but I’m hopeless when it comes to inserting pictures into diaries.
Maybe a fancy editor will come along and help.
Howdy All!
Now to read the links…
Boxturtle (And I’d like an Ultimate Hot Chocolate, please)
:) morning.
The ‘crew’ decided to put the band back together. I’m fortunate to jam on the side.
Morning BT.
Sorry for the thin content. I had a lot going on at work and home yesterday and didn’t have time to dig too deep on these.
What the hell is an Ultimate Hot Chocolate?
Looking for an item my daughter posted on FB (so I can be on topic for a change). AH, here it is:
Pence, Daniels say they stand by Bennett’s education changes
In other words, ignoring the newly elected Democrat in favor of their status quo.
I think I sent everyone a link last night. I don’t think it’s difficult to insert a picture.
We are still working out the kinks, obviously. But hey, we’re baaaaack!!
Staten Island: Hmm. I see no way that they could hide the number of dead for very long, unless they were all homeless. Dunno enough about the area to say if it’s likely. Not sure what political benefit would come from hiding the true numbers. More deaths would mean more disaster money.
Austin Play: My word, the religious wackos are running scared. Can’t even risk a discussion of REAL LIFE penguins. What next, National Geographic channel moved to the Adult-Only tier? Memo to self: One science link every Monday intended to annoy science deniers and other narrowminds.
For profit Universities: Don’t have a problem with the concept, but it seems clear that the industry needs a few regulations. And a prosecutor.
Boxturtle (That same prosecutor could also look at religious schools doing their jobs)
Be sure to rec this post, everyone, so it stays up high in the list.
Mike Pence is a genuine punk.
WRT Staten Island – still no ‘official’ revisions to the death toll there, even though local reports are acknowledging new bodies turning up.
Rockaway Beach was revised upward yesterday to 41, after initial reports after the storm of just 3.
I think the political benefit comes from waiting for the national attention to die down before admitting to the failure. Most of these people were transients, and the city failed to act to get them out of harm’s way. These bodies can be laid directly at Blooomberg’s feet, and I don’t think he wants that on a national stage.
Ultimate Hot Chocolate is just that. It has NO powder in it at all, being made primary from milk, cream, dark brown sugar, and semisweet chocolate. You will never be able to drink normal Hot Chocolate again.
It is full of fats, sugars, and empty calories with just more than a hint of real vanilla. It is the quickest route to tooth decay and diabetes I know of. Perhaps I’ll post the recipe as part of my first Monday.
Boxturtle (The whipped cream, shaved chocolate and cinnamon on top is overkill)
Oh – I definitely want to see a poke at science deniers every week. That will be great.
Yeah and he is dumber than the proverbial box of rocks.
Sounds delicious.
I was thinking about incorporating food into my posts weekly. Either a recipe or food news, something like that.
Oh, do that!
Some of the best hot chocolate I’ve ever had is from South Bend Chocolate Company!
Morning Kris,
Morning Molly and pups
That made it right around 7:00 AM Central or very close to it, which is exactly the time slot from before. Besides people used to stop by at all hours here for a friendly chat. Not to worry.
This diary does not have a feature listing as the Diner had, it appears as a regular post in the myFDL sidebar. That positioning would be something that would be possibly earned or deserved as time, consistency and readership might indicate to the mothership. If something happens and somebody misses a day, normal life goes on at FDL.
Recalling socialist organizer and entertainer, Utah Phillips and one of his familiar monologs (Moose Turd Pie,) about his working the after the depression, if you don’t like what is being fed here (presented) and you complain, you are responsible to create the next piece.
*barf*
Somebody needs to take education out of the hands of the Republicans and other religious fanatics. I sure hope Indiana doesn’t end up like Texas, but with a government THAT red….
If we agree to keep sex education out, will the GOP agree to eliminate misinformation in other subjects?
Boxturtle (A distasteful trade, but at least we won’t have Jesus riding a T. Rex)
Great start….I needed to leave the Betrayus intrigue….I’ve also missed the diner. Thanks.
two items regarding for profit colleges.
1. Their default rate is 3 times higher than other colleges.
2. Big player is Kaplan which is a subsidiary of Washingtonpost. And wasn’t Oylympia Snowe’s husband involved in these scams as well?
Maybe so. Given current political attitudes, I’m surprised that he isn’t busy claiming credit for reducing panhandling.
Boxturtle (Perhaps his political team is still digging out as well. I’ll give him some time)
They’ve been big under Daniels of promoting vouchers, restricting unions, and rating teachers on student outcomes. None of that good for our kids.
I suppose that explains why he is such a darling of the Congressional repubs. Good morning by the way.
I followed your link.
“Save the Earth! It’s the only planet with chocolate”.
I’m wearing a shirt with that to the next Global Warming protest.
Boxturtle (I’ll sic the CEO’s children on them!)
Hey Kris, I am making “Senate Restaurant” bean soup today, using smoked pork hocks, and was thinking it might be something you and your family could make, since you smoke a lot of pork.
I seem to recall a Feinstein connection as well.
The concept is just fine, but much like a local Auto repair shop a lot depends on who is on staff and what their goals are.
Right now, it looks like the goals are mostly to fill their pockets with government cash.
perhaps the “teachers” at the for profits are actually the students and they’re being taught to be lobbyists and politicians.
Boxturtle (if so, the for-profits are doing a bang up job!)
It’s sorta a South Bend institution. You can actually go to their factory and watch chocolate making, and the cafe in the heart of what passes for a downtown has great soups, salads, and yes, CANDY.
Good morning. Sunny side up please.
That sounds great. Want to email me the recipe?
Late to the booth, here, I thought it would be going up at 8 CT, well anyway, glad to see you were keeping my place open. I’ll have the pocket cinnamon buns.
The problem I’ve seen with for-profit schools is that they get students to take on loans, and fail to deliver on promised employment upon graduation. Veterans are particularly sought after for their education benefits.
Good morning Ruth, spuds, and RevBev.
Ah, I see you’ve been seeing the same thing I have, and we have ads for these schools here in the margins, too.
Sure will. It’s pretty simple to make. It’s flavorful, but if you like things with more “heat” you could probably jack that up to taste.
Consider this an encouragement to do food posts, we started Sunday food awhile back but I’m alone there most of the time now. It would be great to have more for foodies to play with.
Always the way you like ‘em. Bacon, sausage, ham? Amfries or hash-browns, Whole wheat, rye or white? Decafe or regular?
Good points Ruth. The student loan program is a cash cow for these places.
Their ads promise alot and are a classic bait and switch.
Forgive me, but I feel compelled to point out what we used as the excuse for Senate bean soup; it’s an improvement in the quality of hot air in the chamber.
Irreverence is good for me.
I’m a total foodie. My food heroes are Tony Bourdain and Masaharu Morimoto.
I think I will work in a food link or two on my posting days. Maybe just a recipe.
Sad but true. In one defense I know of, a nephew could not handle the regular school programs, got a degree online, but didn’t go into debt to do that.
OT,
It is great to see Occupy Sandy validating the movement and finally getting MSM attention.
(It breaks mt heart that people are still without power, water, and other necessities. It always seems to be the people on the margins that are forgotten.)
Lovely, seeing a diner with good eggrolls…
Okay, I’m really a dreamer. But have had eggrolls for breakfast on occasion.
I know the ads bring in quite a bit of money to FDL, but some of the ads displayed make me feel dirty.
Boxturtle (I click on every NRA or GOP ad)
Sunny side up, sa noty / ham and hash browns / whole wheat and jam / and the bottom of the pot high test please.
Wow! I just called the South Bend Chocolate Company to see if they had that “Save the Earth, It’s the Only Planet With Chocolate” as a bumper sticker that could be ordered. They don’t, but the lovely woman who answered the phone said she’d pass on the request to the PTB.
I’d put that on my car in a heartbeat. I own a 2007 and it would be its first bumper sticker.
Please, msmolly, if you notice they start carrying them, please do let us know.
Kevin had a great piece up about this on the Dissenter yesterday.
You CANNOT be OT on an Over Easy thread.
SI is a wasteland, there simply aren’t enough resources to get everywhere. progressives will see this as a hint that perhaps we should devote more to disaster recovery. GOPers will see it as yet another example of government being unable to do anything.
Boxturtle (Prediction: FEMA will get no more money)
Good morning, nonqui and pupses, and thank you Kris.
Thank you for the Utah Phillips story, nonqui. From my earliest childhood I remember my dad telling his version of it, taking place in a hunting camp in Canada. The closing line was, “this tastes like shit!……but good!”
“….but good!” still always brings a laugh around our house. Thanks for a nice memory.
LOL!
I am toying with posting a super recipe for beef vegetable barley soup, but it is from a cookbook and I’m concerned about copyright. The secret is the flavorful broth, from scratch, and it may be the best vegetable soup I’ve ever eaten. You can also make a couple other varieties from the broth, including beef noodle soup.
Just not sure about posting a recipe from a cookbook. What do you think? I would give clear credit, of course.
Sure will. I don’t go there much, though. They have a large kiosk in the mall.
There are places that make custom bumper stickers, but I would be concerned about copyright.
Big request, yesterday, from WI State Education Superintendent Tony Evers, for increased aid to try to recoup some of the 2/3 state financing cut by Walker and his wrecking crew last year.
That makes two cars missing all bumper stickers. I’m afraid if I choose one thing I do believe in, I’ll have to go with all of them. Of course, on the trunk there’s an ‘Adopt a Pet’ ribbon.
Just use Firefox with AdBlock Plus. Yes, I know we’ve had this conversation before, and you can’t change your work computer’s setup, but I guess I’m just spoiled. No ads.
Good morning all. I’d like a bowl of steel cut oats and some sweet potato has beens (er, hash browns) and a death defying cup of ultimate hot chocolate.
So nice to see the opening of the Over Easy. Thanks for being the short order cook this morning, Kris.
As I understand it, fair use would allow you to post a single recipe from a cookbook properly credited.
Only the FDL mods could say if it meets FDL guidelines.
Boxturtle (Betty Crockers Cookbook is effectively public domain)
As I understand it, if you give a link, you can post it. I do that with most of my food posts, and giving the recipe should be good publicity for the post where you found it.
My ex commented on Facebook that a friend with an Obama sticker on his car got rammed. Twice.
I don’t put on bumper stickers cause they ruin the paint, over time.
Okay, consider me your echo.
Nope, it is in a printed cookbook, and it’s a Cook’s Illustrated one, and you can’t get any of their recipes online unless you subscribe. I own the cookbook and would highly recommend it. Great recipes.
Soups, Stews & Chilis
Morning, Pups.
Imagine that I slept in this morning, of all days. So Solly.
Neato Bisquito to see everyone today. OmAli, we’ve missed you and it wouldn’t be the same re-opening of the diner without ya.
Thanks for the superb introduction, Kris. You’ve got a real nice way with words.
Ouch. It’s that hate filled Chicago crowd provoking bad feelings to blame, see: Bobo. We were talking about this at attaturk’s post earlier.
That’s not a big request, it’s WAY less than the schools need. And with the weighting of property values suggested, I’m not sure that it’s anything but robbing peter to pay Paul. Peter deserves to have his children educated too, even if he currently has more money.
Boxturtle (Or in the case of charters, robbing EVERYBODY to pay Paul)
Since Marion from Savannah puts up NYT editorials you have to subscribe to get, I am sure it’s okay or she would have gotten in trouble. Anyone had experience with this?
And I got the time wrong, here, saved you a place.
I would clearly credit the cookbook, and even provide the Amazon link to it. But because they are so protective of their recipes, I wouldn’t want to get FDL in trouble. The cookbook is worth every penny of it’s $20 cost (I think I got mine at Costco or Sam’s Club).
Heard that story a long time ago and SD had a fond penchant for Utah Philips. Thought it fitting for today’s inaugural post. Complain and you are next in line to. Nice to see you this morning.
You didn’t warn her not to watch me eat.
I wonder how that works? Marion provides a link to her own website (so it isn’t hosted by FDL) and I assume she has legitimate access through the paywall (a subscriber, perhaps?). I know how to circumvent the NYT paywall — very simple fix to the URL — but Marion reprints the editorials. Hmmm…
That sounds like giving them free advertising, which shouldn’t be a problem. We’ll ask the mods first, then.
Thanks, Ruth.
I’m going to be pulling some links together today for tomorrow morning’s Over Easy. I’ll be focusing on family and childrens issues. That’s fairly broad, but I imagine that our topics may overlap here and there. I see this as a place we discuss human rights. Si?
Sorry to be away folks. I’ve been on the phone for almost an hour with a buddy back in California. He’s going through a rough spot :(
Thanks, so good to be here, but can only stay a sec. Will look back in later, and I have a feeling the booths will still be full :)
So great to see the Diner concept continue. Thanks, everyone, for your energy, spirit, and love in putting this together.
With such good manners that you take your hat off inside, you needn’t worry except that she might want what you’re having.
Wondered where you’d gone. I thought maybe you were actually WORKING at your PAYING job! Hope you helped your buddy.
If there’s something we haven’t discussed, it’s going to happen one of these days anyway.
It was the perfect start. Nice to see you, too.
Trick lead in there, but …if we hadn’t noticed you were missing, it’s because there’s so much good company standing in.
That’s about right, I think.
I also want to slip in a good Horseshit! every once in a while. Regarding the continuing clean up in New Jersey, I’ve been keeping an eye out for beerfartliberal. He’s in Florida, but has family in NJ.
Big in the sense of, whose stone you’d trying to squeeze blood from. Fortunately, our school district, with zero state aid forever, just passed another referendum to over-ride spending limits 3-1.
Smaller govm’nt in WI is Walker and exactly two cronies, all by themselves, with no legislative input, deciding if WI is going to set up health insurance exchanges or not do it at all, or, go so far as to forbid the Feds from thrusting themselves upon us.
Actually, looking at that South Bend Chocolate Company website again, that’s a pretty generic “bumper sticker” so I’m not sure the saying is even original, much less copyrighted. You probably could have it made by Zazzle.
Still trying to figure out how I can help him. He’s in a bad spot that it seems only money can fix. I’m not comfortable throwing money at this particular buddy.
OmAli, nonq! Welcome! There are booths with your names on them.
OH looky here!
http://www.zazzle.com/save+the+earth+its+the+only+planet+with+chocolate+tshirts
Sorry to hear that. Rough spots happen from time to time. (Whether we want them to or not.) And, it shows us, once again, what a good friend you are to take the time to talk to him.
Human rights. Inhuman rights. The humanist Left. Whatever.
On the subject of human rights, am I the only one who thinks of HYPOCRITES when the USG criticizes Iran for having a political prisoner die in custody?
Boxturtle (I’m sure it was a suicide, just like ours were)
And here!
http://www.cafepress.com/+save-the-earth-it%27s-the-only-planet-with-chocolate+gifts
Greenwarrior and BoxTurtle, you are in luck!
Well, I don’t know about good, but I certainly consider myself decent.
How is Abu Ali doing?
Jeez, that makes us sound ancient :). Love it, though!
Criticize the USG all you want. They’ll argue that they’ve kept Bradley Manning alive…
(…even though they’ve tortured him.)
That’s a dilemma, Kris. Sounds from your reservation as though he might have gotten himself into trouble?
I prefer the term ‘seasoned’.
He is much better, thank you. Went back to work yesterday. He never gets sick, so that was scary.
It’s certainly been a pattern for him. I bailed him out of a similar spot about 2 years ago, just before coming to Texas.
Any news on SD’s kittehs, OmAli? I’d expect you to get my check today.
Excellent. I’ve ordered the one in the top row middle. Thanks for the link!
Boxturtle (Probably will have to get one for the wife, too)
Kris, I saw your comment about most of his problem being about money after I typed my response. Money can solve some problems, but …
Which reminds me of something I read in the novel I’m currently reading. Guns don’t kill people, but they sure make it easier.
What’s the connection? Something about throwing money at a problem doesn’t solve what caused the problem.
Don’t mind me. I’m not all the way awake yet.
Which is why you’re hesitant to do it again. I hear ya!
Never had thought about it much, but it seems that highrise buildings all scrunched together are really hard to return power too. So many power lines, and so few crews can get in at once, I guess.
And so appropriate for Over Easy *g*
Got to run but will see you all later.
Safe travels and safe home, pupses dears.
Ohmmmm
Now we need to find a jigsaw puzzle with that on it for Om’s booth.
OBJECTION! Assumes material not in evidence.
Boxturtle (they’ve got teams of lawyers making sure that material is not in evidence)
Aw you guys, this is not good. I have been up since about 7:30 a.m. and my sole accomplishment at 10:15 is a little breakfast and a shower. Cannot do this every morning!! (But it’s great to be here!)
Thanks Kris, especially for kick-starting this thing, yesterday. Some employment is calling me, I’ll be checking back.
Over Easy works for eggs, and discussing things Over Easy mostly leads to better understanding. But feelings of loss are never, Over Easy, nor should they ever be. Peace and Resolve, Friends.
You’re right. You can’t shower every morning. That’s just a waste of water.
Ruth, I liked your order of pocket lint buns. Too funny.
I’m thinking the good news we share can be under the Free Range Eggs and the bad news is Rotten Eggs.
I’m not concerned about the money. I’m concerned that he won’t learn anything, ya know? If someone is always around to bail him out, he never has to suffer his own consequences or learn to fix his problems.
I dunno. Maybe it’s not my place to teach him those lessons.
Talk to you later, Dude.
Glad he’s better. Hopefully whatever didn’t work out, that made him susceptible will not happen again.
Oops, saw this as was going out the door.
Nancy says all is going well. No new news, but thanks in advance for the contribution :). I’ll update in the next couple of days.
LOL. A shower is my first activity in the morning. I’ve been retired more than two years, but old habits die hard, I guess.
Fingers crossed, that’s for sure, thanks.
Love the puzzle idea, demi.
*poofingforrealthistime*
We all occasionally have to turn down some one because they come back over and over and usually for money. You all may have noticed some one who comments at FDL occasionally, and elsewhere, who has a monthly crisis needing to be bailed out or will be out on the streets. I helped too many times, it doesn’t solve the problem.
You’re right. I guess that explains why I’m at my home desk in a spiffy outfit, heels, nylons, with perfect coiffed hair and fabulous make up. Ha!
The old adage that money doesn’t solve money problems, I guess.
I struggle with this guy because he’s just like me. I was in a very similar spot about 5 years ago. Someone helped me.
At the same time, I’m not exactly rolling in it. Can’t really afford to say goodbye to cash without putting some things on credit. I would do that for a friend, I just don’t think it would do anything but solve the immediate crisis.
I’m at my desk! Just like that!
Usually I also get dressed immediately, in my retired “work” outfit of a t-shirt and jeans. But I haven’t even done that yet. I was *going* to take my iPad downstairs and read here while riding my exercise bike. However….I’m wearing a t-shirt and leggings and haven’t gone near the bike yet. SIGH. Now that the “real” bike is up for the winter, I have no will power.
Love the heels, Kris. And the coifed hair! LOL. But you probably DO have to get some paying work done, don’t you?
Yeah, I scroll right by those posts. Just about the only reason he comments here is to plead for money. I haven’t sent any.
Most of the demands on my time come across from India. When I open my email in the AM I’ll have 40-50 things to respond to or act on.
Today is a national holiday for them, so I opened my email to only 4 things, 3 of which were advertisements :)
You’re a good soul, but you’re no dumb soul. Speaking of which, I let a stranger into my car yesterday. But, wait. I was getting into my van after doing some grocery shopping and a young man approached me. He was clean, polite had he skateboard in hand and asked if he could ask me a favor. I said, Well, you can ask. He wanted to know if I could give him a ride to his house, way up the hill. I gave him a good looking over. No gun poking out of any pockets. So, I said Sure, hop in. I took him to his doorstep which indeed was Way Up The Hill. Hard to do on a skateboard. I don’t know if I was being dumb, but, I don’t want to live in a world where a kid can’t ask a neighbor for help.
That’s a step too far, then, especially since you’ve helped before. You can’t let your own family be second in line behind anyone.
I think you have to go with your gut on stuff like that. Most people aren’t crooks, and most kids are not hoodlums. Ya did good, I think.
x2.
Whenever there’s a real comment on the subject at hand, I’ll respond, but that’s very seldom. Sad.
The ones asking for money are usually the problem, that does sound like simply a kid hoping for a little lift.
Thanks, Molly. We had a nice chat on the drive. He’s going to the local community college, taking computer science classes. I said, Oh, right, you have today off for the holiday. Do you know which holiday? And, he did.
It crossed my mind to mention that he might be careful how far down the hill he goes without a plan to get back, but I held my tongue. Imagine that.
As Margaret said on a thread a couple of days ago, “I don’t have a mute button.” LOL. Sounds like you don’t usually either, and I know I don’t.
Tee Hee. It’s true.
I’m going to take off, but will check back later.
See you all tomorrow morning, ladies and gents. Oh, and the rest of you too.
I’d bet his plan to get back was exactly what he did…ask for a ride. And it probably works pretty reliably.
Yep, I’m out too. Neither the bean soup or my granddaughter’s PJs for her birthday are going to make themselves. Have a good day, everyone! Thanks for the nice kickoff, Kris!
You’re welcome. Have a great day.
For all – I’m going to stick around throughout the day. Will refresh periodically. Thanks to everyone who stopped by this morning and made this a success.
Double Woot!!!
You did get my email yesterday, right? Just want to make sure I had your addy right.
What a great launch. Woot!
I just checked back and it took me 10 minutes to read the new comments.
Thanks, Kris
Now I’m all dressed to go out and do a few things myself, and it’s gone from 28F to 45F, so not the challenge it might be. Thanks for good company, have a good day.
I sure did. You got it right.
Thank msmolly and demi and BT and Ruth. If they hadn’t been on board this wouldn’t have happened.
It’s warming up a bit here, too. We’re at 48 now! Have a great day.
I just wanted to slide in for a quick cuppa and say thanks to everyone, good to see you, Om. I have to cover my bills this week, and I’ll then get a check into the mail.
My tomatoes bit it in the cold the night before last. I may try to see if any of the tomatoes are not frozen too badly to put into bags in the cupboard. I just did not have time to really bundle them up sufficiently the last few days.
Thanks for the link about SI, Kris. Really hate to see all that misery and destruction.
Thanks for getting us started, we were wandering around without our morning hash, and glad to be back. (Wipes off table, pitches linty bun into trash.)
See you tomorrow.
Thanks again Kris. Great job. Looking forward to the daily contribution of all the regulars.
150 comments! Obviously plenty of p ent -up demand for a morning diner.
And, Kris, a great intro. (Wiping small tear).
The timing is right.
Have a great day everyone!
Woohoo, I’m fancy!
W00t again. Looks like a backstage angel put a picture in the post (or maybe Kris figured it out?). Thanks!
Oh, thank you Kit! You were the angel! I think we’ll all get it figured out by the end of the week!
Late arrival . . . but thanks for the post, Kris. Looking forward to yours (and other contributors) keeping this space warm for the Dinerzens.
OT: Has anyone heard any mention of the potential for post-Sandy diseases. If homeless and others failed to survive, I’ve been wondering where all the rats (yeah, the non-human kind) go when their habitat has been flooded?
You’re still my hero.
I have been out in the capitalist cesspool today.
(Went to see my banker) :)
Thought SD would appreciate the comment.
Hey, thanks, fancy-pants. Those look so yummy, I just made some poached eggs. I’m happy to share with ya.
There are a handful of people to follow on twitter, if you use twitter, for real deal news coming out of New York and New Jersey.
@LiamPhuckall (Liam lives in Staten Island)
@sabzbrach (Joanne, one of the authors to the article linked above)
@DustinSlaughter (another author from above)
@KennethLipp (another author from above)
If you peruse these folks’ tweets a bit, you can find sources that they’re citing and retweeting for real news about topics like disease, displacement, food resources, etc.
Have you showered since? You should. Bankers are nasty.
In for lunch, tater soup. I have a whole soup kettle full here, bacon bits with yours?
Good swimmers they are likely wherever higher ground is until their ordinary haunts are pumped out, but your question is one I had not considered.
I met Liam at S17 in NYC. At one point we were all hiding out from the police together — the core Austin members of Team Chupacabra along with @LiamPhuckall & @CourtneyKissMe — on the oversized window sill of the Men’s Warehouse across the street from Zuccotti. Good times.
His home was gutted by Sandy, and he loaded his family on a rescue ship then stayed behind to rescue other people from their homes for hours before finally allowing himself to be put on a rescue boat.
Aw, thanks. And thanks to everyone starting this new feature!
NPR just reported bacterial from the flood water can prove dangerous to human health. Flood waters, floating dead rats, fuel-oil film on the surface, some of the flooding occurred in EPA designated toxic clean-up sites and adds to the noxious, potentially deadly mix.
Gee, I had to do that, too. But it was my friendly credit union! And they did a nice thing, so…
Nom. I’m making ham & bean soup for dinner. Was just out, and coming in the aroma was a punch in the face. I love soup.
Pancakes! I’m so glad Over Easy is here. I’m never up when it’s fresh but I enjoy reading later. Sounds as if it’s going to be fun with lots of info. Applauding all of you who write and comment at such an early hour.
Hey, a photo appeared! Glad to see the Diner is still open.
me too! It helps that it a local bank and my son’s scout leader is the President.
Small town banks do it they old fashioned way, they earn it.(Smith Barney)
From the article in the Austin American-Statesman:
And apparently it is only between male and female penguins. What were those silly UT students thinking?
Sheesh. I’m still drinking coffee (cold now) and just had a couple grilled cheese sandwiches and a bowl of ramen :) Winter lunch for winter weather.
Right? Those penguin women need to get their asses back in the home and raise those babies.
Penguins have been doing it wrong for thousands of years.
the penguin article is really getting around on my social media — I shared it after reading it here. I posted it to the Occupy Austin Facebook wall and most people are outraged, but of course we got the predictable ‘Think of the impressionable children1!!” comment.
I mean, if UT had been allowed to perform, children might think IT’S OK FOR SAME SEX PENGUIN PAIRS TO RAISE BABY PENGUINS.
I know. Just imagine the scandal.
Fortunately, the Texas Board of Education is good at eliminating any “science-y” stuff from textbooks. The children are safe.
Well, fortunately wild penguins live in a completely benign and hospitable environment in which they can afford to be sloppy about survival.
Kris, I was pondering this mornings chat, and I realized I missed an opportunity. When I said I just don’t want to live in a world where a kid can’t ask a neighbor for help. It was my drama queen moment. Back of one hand to my forehead, and the other hand fluttering over my chest.
Just That.
Carry On.
Thanks so much, guys, for opening a tribute to SD diner! I always showed up very late (had to drink the coffee dregs – yuck) but always enjoyed reading through all the comments and the links. Many, many times spent my lunch doing this! I’d just ask that someone put on a half pot of coffee close to noon eastern time…
Kris, I am excited to see your ongoing links and discussion on education, a favorite topic of mine (next to politics and dogs and food). We need to go back to teaching kids how to think, not what to think.
We were heavily involved in search and rescue (using dogs) and still have many friends involved. With Katrina, they still were pulling in SAR dog teams to find the dead over 8 months (please note the word “over”) after the storm. It’s kept quiet.
Loved your comment. Perhaps you could throw down a link two when you’re here.
I’ concerned about family issues. Well, and a whole bunch of other stuff here.
Thank you.
I just finished watching an hour-long documentary piece on HBO about dyslexia, and the different thinking and learning processes that are being developed to aide in educating dyslexic children and adults.
Very interesting stuff.
A bit of trivia – Richard Branson (the gazillionaire) and Gavin Newsom (former mayor of San Fran, now Lt. Governor of CA) are dyslexic.
HIGHLY Rcc’d, way kewl, bless you Kris and the rest for this.
I’m a nite owl, I’ll always be late to this thread.
*G*
But good on ya’s all, for honoring Southern Dragon in this manner.
*bows*
Fantastic, thank you Kris and the organizers of Over Easy. It is good to have this, to navigate through the thick of news and stories. Much appreciated!
Dyslexia is fascinating. My husband is not only dyslexic, he also has left/right dyslexia.(I constantly have to say “no, the OTHER left!”) They never discovered it in school, just held him back. But we recently were discovered by his father’s family and there are dyslexics in the family. He felt vindicated in a way. Einstein, Edison, Steve Jobs are all dyslexic.
hmmmm, late again. thanks kris &Co for keeping the lights on. Hot chocolate, maybe some cinnamon toast…
So is Bill Gates, I think. Or he has Aspergers. Not sure which.
Edit: I think Bill Gates & Aspergers is an unknown, according to Google.
Right/left dyslexic? Hmmmm. My ex is probably dyslexic..,never diagnosed, but we thought he might be, at least mildly. He likes to read, but finds it difficult, and has to do things like get into contorted positions to read steadily.
He also does seem unable to remember which is left and which is right. I always thought his parents just did a bad job of teaching him…..didn’t know that was a kind of dyslexia.
