I usually don’t get too involved with the issue of who or when Iran will be attacked because it’s been debunked for about a decade now for any number of reasons that well informed FDL/MyFDL readers are aware of.
However, I came upon THIS read Why Israel’s Rattling Sabers thru AW.COM, by one Yousef Munayyer, and it’s a great read.
For instance, regarding why the threat of Iran attacking Israel or anyone is pure myth:
“Most analysts, myself included, however, look at Iran’s past behaviour as the best indicator of its future decision-making and note the many steps the Iranian regime has taken to ensure regime survival and act rationally as a political power in the region.”
Mr. Munayyer explains how and WHY Israel IS saber rattling, and altho he does NOT claim an attack WON’T happen, he does spell out some of the consequences (there are many others he does not dwell on) if an attack WERE to happen and more importantly to us readers, WHY Israel is making so much noise about an attack.
1) To force Obama to make a request of Israel for concessions NOT to strike (think settlement issues).
2) Concessions for long term issues that might benefit Israel on some way or another.
Essentially, in March Obama will speak at an AIPAC policy conference. Netanyahu wants to FORCE Obama to ask for concessions by then, if not before his campaign for November kicks into full gear (“hey Bibi, could you wait till AFTER our Nov. elections to do it?”).
This is simple stuff folks, spelled out clearly, cleanly and factually.
A great read.
It does NOT state there will NOT be an attack, but it DOES well explain why the rhetoric has heated up so much in the past months. Bought and paid for by AIPAC and our MSM’s AIPAC funded and supported sources and experts on these affairs.
Give it a read, it’s a good one.
Ok, for those of you who will NOT read it, here’s the wrap and close:
No one benefits from Israel actually striking Iran, except for the military industrial complex, but the Netanyahu government has a great deal to gain from hanging the possibility of a unilateral strike ominously over the head of President Obama before an election. They are hedging their bets for November in the hopes that they will either get a first-term Republican facing domestic constraints that prevent him from pressuring Israel, or a docile Obama, who has already given away the house on Jerusalem and settlements.

One attack there will certainly never be is a Nuclear attack on Israel launched from Iran; because Iran is directly downwind from Israel via the upper atmosphere’s jet stream:
If Iran were to Nuke Israel, they would get the fallout:
So, Israel’s claim that they have to fear Nuclear attack from Iran is incorrect.
Thanks for stopping by Norm, and yep on that fallout issue, too. N still, the sabers are rattled loudly . . . ;-)
But Why…? Follow the oil-stained money, Larue…! ;-)
Hey, I thot the AJ article pretty well summed it up.
As to US Imperial Desires for oil, on behalf of the global 1%?
Even THEY are not dumbfuck enough to attack Iran and risk a nuke WW3 . . . you know this. ;-)
Mahalo, and Happy Valentine’s to you and yers!
Saber rattling raises the price of Oil, and moving ships even more so. Lots of politicians and their friends invested in Oil…
True, dat . . . gas is up in one over night by 7 cents here in Sacto.
N yep the pols have investments in oil specs and futures, no doubt . . . backed by hedge bets, too likely.
;-)
… but… but… but… Pon Raul!
(… kind of like pon farr for libertarians every 4 years only less productive…)

Netanyahu is a wrong wing extremist and he hates democrats.
There is a danger of an october surprise- working as a tool of the Republicans.
Netanyahu was involved with Reagan/Bush when they undermined Carter’s negotiations with Iran for the Hostages, promising them weapons which Israel would deliver. They did this to win the election.
Yes, but sabre rattling significantly raises risk of any misstep leading to full scale war.
All Obama has to do is invoke the notion that Native Americans and Latinos, wearing our nation’s uniform, will NOT fight and die on Israeli soil for a self-inflicted second-rate democracy. If so, Obama would quickly deflate the balloon that is Netanyahu’s abject nonsense.
If so, the Neo-Cons’ “critique” of Obama would become, not only louder, but they would be forced to oppose the “reduction” of nuclear weapons owned and operated by Israel.
And anyone here at the FDL and who wants to “weigh-in” to this arena, start espousing the “reduction” of the weapons in Irael’s inventory, and enjoy all the hell that will quickly break loose.

The sanctions imposed on Iran are a little more than Sabre Rattling.
Sanctions imposed on a state can be considered a declaration of War.
I do wonder if Iran did not have a nuclear program, just precisely what the “threat” would involve.
To that concept I’d say Syria has the edge in that catagory. However, I fully concur with your point . . . There’s no real Fail Safe in this cluster phucked reality with Bibi and our neocon warhawks . . .
I fully agree Bibi is not only a major threat but an extremist loon of a fuck to the nth degree. Like our neocons.
However, I still think sanity of some sorts prevails and NO one is attacking Iran.
Why?
Russia.
China.
Pakistan.
India.
I’d even venture to say that the US would intervene if Bibi Likudnic gave ANY hint they were on the go for an attack of Iran.
So, AFAIC, it’s all saber rattling for leverage on Obama and our November erections.
Syria is the already agreed upon target . . . n that’s gonna be scary enough as IT could blow up bigger than any one wants due to the myriad of factions/proxies involved (not to mention regional control of oil supplies and regional influence).

The sanctions, in one form or another have been in place by US or someone, since Khomeini came to power and they kidnapped our citizens.
The saber rattling is with regards to actually ATTACKING Iran. That’s the thrust of this diary.
I abhor the sanctions to the nth degree, too. And yes, without the myth of nuke weaponry development there would be another myth.
Israel dislikes Iran for its Muslim support and interference with Palistinean issues, and the US and oil interests want Iran’s golden sands . . . it is what it is.
But war? Not gonna happen, pure global suicide. China, Russia, India and Pakistan prevent this one.
Sadly, Obama will not be doing that soon.
He needs the tension to placate the war machine and industrialists (and to keep oil prices high for his Wall Street futures speculators and oil baron buddies).
But yeah, there are a NUMBER of simple things a President could do to end this insanity, agreed.
Sadly, the 1% corporate fascists (US and global) get too much mileage our of crying HAVOC in the Middle East, with Israel an essential and VERY willing partner in this endeavor.
Good to see you about, Jaango.
Larue,
Thanks for the response.
BTW, I do enjoy you’re diaries on music, even though I know next to nothing about banjos and banjo players. However, I do like the sound.
Jaango
Jaango, thanks for the music thots.
Hell, I HATE banjo’s, it’s the other instruments and the vocal harmonies and music that turn me on.
Banjo’s are a lot like lawyers, just ONE at the bottom of the ocean (or in the dumpster) is a good beginning.
