Ok, the last we saw of Larue’s Garden was back in May of this year, after we had planted some in April, some in early May.
My FDL Garden Post, May 5, 2012
New, fresh, a bit sparse, stuff in seedling phases, stuff in the ground that had not yeat seeded up . . . you know the drill, it’s early, even for May (we had early warm, then two weeks of cold in late April early May, weird spring).
N then, a month or so later, it’s all phreakin insane.
Who knows what lies for the rest of the summer, as horn worms, aphids and more get to our stuff.
But for now, stuff’s got tall, really tall. Stuffs flowering, stuffs growing mater wise, pepper wise, bean wise.
So let’s cut to the cinematic chase, get to the pics, and show you what a month will do for 3 or more kinds of maters, pole beans galore, 3 squash, tyyme, basil, oregano, rosemary, n a few red n yellow bell pepper plants, and the flowers honey loves, that gives us cred, major cred, with teh management and neighbors.
Here’s back patio shelf with fennel, flowers, and thyme and oregano, with background of stuff outside of fence.

More back side.

In The Ground, Back Side.

Back side right . . . left was mater, rosemary, and pole beans climbing all over, with tons of clover in the ground for water saving.

From here I’m just gonna show pics, similar to last month’s shots.
I’ll just say, it all got really bigger! *G*

As you can see, we expanded out back outside the fence, and up front, outside the fence, with some stealth gardening.
It’s all, so far, growing fast and hard . . .
What are YOU growing, and show me yer pics!

I’m so jealous! I have little seedlings struggling to survive my non-green thumb. The best thing going on my balcony are the hot red pepper lights I just strung on the railing. I don’t know how to add pictures either or I could show my tiny pretty two leaves that are blooming in their 1 inch diameter pot that originally housed a single bamboo plant. It has a pretty dragon outlined in gold on it.
hiya, larue! when my frenzy of gardening is over, i’ll try to find my camera so’s i can take some pics.
I tried starting a lot of things in seeding trays this year before planting out into the garden, it has worked really well! I put the trays on the side walk on the south side of the house; the sidewalk butts right up to the foundation, lots of heat radiating on to the little babies and they germinate rapidly. Except for when i gamble with using old seed :)
Now i’m in the process of transplanting the last of my starts into the garden, all of the following were started in seeding trays; charentais melon, sweet & early cantaloupe, sugar baby watermelon, chris cross watermelon, udumalapet eggplant (an Indian variety), rosa bianca eggplant, 5-color sweet pepper mix, oregon sugar snap pea, little marvel pea, kentucky wonder pole bean, provider bush bean, burgundy bush bean, golden bush bean, waldman’s dk. green lettuce, butterhead lettuce, lettuce mix, mesclun mix.
I’ve direct seeded the follwing: watermelon radish, french breakfast radish, jumbo pea, parsnip, carrot, rutabaga, & beet.
And that’s not to mention all my flower seedlings *g*
and that is why people don’t too often see me online these days. My new work schedule is wonderful, up early and in the garden! four days off every week! a farmgrrrlll in the garden is a happy farmgrrrlll.
Larue,
All I have managed to grow are a multiplicity of Cacti here in the Sonoran Desert. And likewise at the “Big Hole” and known as the Grand Canyon. Today, I am short “water” since Peabody want’s it all and the Feds are “fronting” for Peabody.
On the other hand, the Great Matriarch tells me that I should keep plugging away at Taco Bell since they are still unwilling to give my my “historical royalties” for their financial gain that comes about daily for their use of my chiles, and etcetera. Or is that “hysterical royalties”?
And not to minimize all your hard work crafting your garden, btw, congreats, I am still waiting for you to share that “secret” barbeque sauce your famous for. Now, where’s it at?
Jaango
Absolutely gorgeous. Thank you Larue.
I’ve only got an 88-square-foot balcony, but even though I didn’t set them out until the middle of May, all three of my tomato plants and my poblano plant have dozens of blooms, and the poblano and one of the tomato plants actually have fruit. That’s shockingly early for me where I live.
Oh, and thanks, Larue! Your garden is gorgeous.
Larue, I have a great deck and would like to have lots of plants – not veggies especially but herbs and things that flower. My concern is that the deck is in full sun from noon on and gets so hot it’s like an oven. What could I safely grow in those conditions that wouldn’t die from the heat? I’m more of an indoor plant person but would love to have a pretty deck. Any help would be appreciated.
Larue’s garden is one place where the weeds get more attention than the plants ! *g*
Great Garden, Dood ! Highly recc’d !

{{{{ PETRO }}}} long time no see! with my new work schedule, i never see my LLN buddies anymore :(
herbs LOVE sun and heat. They won’t die as long as they get water. tomatoes, eggplant & peppers also love sun & heat … they can all be grown successfully in containers. If you have a balcony & weight is an issue, empty capped soda bottles etc in the bottom of the container take up room but don’t contribute to soil weight.
Thanks so much. Would love to have tomatoes and peppers especially. Will try and see what happens. All advice appreciated.
my mom now lives in a town house, grows mostly flowers, but also some tomatoes in pots. easy-peasy! sun & heat, that’s what tomatoes love.
Can’t succeed unless ya keep trying!
Pot, decent potting soil mixed in with steer manure (5-1 soil to manure), water with miracle gro . . . . easy! Oh, sunshine, usually 8 hours or more is good for maters and such . . . try herbs like basil and oregano and rosemary in pots, or trays. Only need 4 inches deep of soil for incredible results . . . Good luck and thanks for stopping by!
I fully concur about seeding trays as starters . . . we used tomato starters from the store usually, this year I got some seeds and started them in shallow soil, worked fine!
Love to see pics, you got room we don’t, and you’ve worked HARD at all this. LOVE to see your results!
4 years ago my wife got a lil digital camera, simple little toy, from work as a gift/bonus . . . it makes taking pics like I do easy to do, load up, move to photobucket and then drop into MyFdl diaries . . . I’d bet a cheap digital cam with no frills would go for less than $100 . . . .
Thanks for stopping by!
Jaango, I can appreciate scarcity of water on the Sonoran Desert . . . some cacti you can eat I know . . . but it’s not the same as a wide variety of herbs and veggies and fruits.
Hmm, bbq sauce . . . which one?
Have you seen my 7 day green chili recipe with SouthWest Buttermilk Corn Bread?
Here It Is!
Thanks for stopping by, lemme know what bb

Thanks for stopping by, lemme know what bbq sauce you refer to, I’m confused but that’s a normal state of somewhat grace here at Chez Larue . . . lol
Thank you ma’am . . . n thanks for stopping by, and for all of YOUR wonderful fonts and musings . . .
Kewl! I have a chili serrano that’s been a real producer for two years now, what I REALLY need is a poblano and a passilla plant. I go thru them two, the dried and smoked kind, like they were candy . . . . LOVE the flavor of them two.
As to early bloomin . . . weather is weirder every year it seems . . . . thanks for stopping by, got pics?
Almost ANY herb.
Basil, rosemary, oregano, thyme, lemon thyme, French thyme . . . cilantro and flat leaf (Italian Parsley) parsley need less sun and more shade . . . any of the onion family, leeks, green onions, chives, garlic chives, etc.
Fennel bulbs (love the taste), I put their fronds in salads, hack off top parts for other uses like soups, flavor in chicken, meat and fish dishes. I leave them in the pot, don’t harvest them . . . well, haven’t yet anyways.
Google is yer friend also, lots of easy info out there!
GO for it!
Thanks for stoppin by, let us know what you get into and into a pot or into the ground!
Heh, I actually decided to let our clover grow and flower in anything it pops up in, helps preserve moisture and rejuvenates soil nicely!
Thanks for stoppin by, anything growin in your homestead?
Great comment and suggestions!
Gotta go, will check in later tonite to see any additional thots, comments or pics being shared!
Thanks to all for stopping by. *waves*
Larue–
Must say, you do have a nice looking garden. (I’ve never seen a vegetable that I didn’t like–haven’t had red meat, fish or fowl in at least thirty years, now). Not sure what kind of weather you’ve got, but here in the Mid-Atlantic region, it’s pretty difficult to grow much in containers. Had a little luck with tomatoes one year, but the flavor was so bland, I really didn’t enjoy them much.
Hope you post some updates.
Blue
I’ll go another month and take more pics then, should be a full jungle by then.
Mid atlantic, fog? Ocean breezes? Lack of sun and heat?
Yeah, that would hamper tomatoes.
Greeenhouse, trap the heat and sun’s rays thru the fog?
