Let’s Pick-The Mac Lose Another Git

The Greatful Dead has The Keyboard Curse, as a number of their piano/keys players died young along the long strange trip that’s been.

Now I wonder about my beloved Fleetwood Mac. The years were hard on this band from early on.

Peter Green left the band due to issues allegedly from overdosing acid.

Jeremy Spencer walked out of an LA hotel one day and joined The Children Of God. Peter Green came back to finish THAT tour with Kirwin and the band.

Kirwin became untenable and mentally unstable thru alcoholism of the worst sorts and drug use and was fired.

N now in the past month bad news visits The Mac once again.

Bob Welch committed suicide last month due to his back issues which were dissolving his quality of life, with multiple surgeries leaving him nearly invalid.

And now I just read, Bob Weston (who replaced Danny Kirwin for two albums and was a hoss of a git) was found dead recently in his London home (age 64) from gastrointestinal hemorrhage.

Weston was fired shortly after Mystery To Me and the tour to support it, when Mic found out Weston was fooling around with Mic’s wife.

That’s 5 incredibly solid and wonderful git players, singers, songwriters . . . all with tragedy in their music and personal lives . . . what a shame, they were fine musicians, all of them.

Weston/Welch Make Live Mac Magic (from Mystery To Me):

Weston N Welch (and my fav Christine McVie, Make More Mac Magic.

Eerie, but Weston at times has the exact same tonality and styles of Danny Kirwin. I guess, it’s to be expected, that Fleetwood would GO with a Kirwin like git, but Weston also shines on his own merits as well as having that distinct Kirwin sound.

Weston and Welch were good, wish they’d had more time together in the band. They did Penguin and Mystery To Me, n then along came Lyndsey and Stevie.

But then, Kirwin and Welch only did Bare Trees and Future Games, two albums, both epic works IMHO.

Here’s the band rolling along and groovin:

And because well, it’s Christine, after all. McVie, Welch, no Weston, doing a STELLAR live version of Christine’s Spare Me A Little . . . just another great, great song from the band. LeSigh.

So, Green has recovered thru the years and has been out playing for a decade or so now at times. Jeremy Spencer has been playing music ever since he left Mac, all for benefits for his religious group. I think he’s even toured in the past few years with some of his kids. How kewl is that. Danny Kirwin, sad to say, has been reclusive and safely living without music for decades now, somewhere in England, but he’s alive. Bob Welch passed away last month, and now Bob Weston.

Their music lives on in the vinyl, cd’s, and old audio and video clips that are out there . . . fine, fine music, fine, fine musicians, all of them. Thanks gents, for every note.

To close, as much as I prefer Fleetwood Mac pre Buckingham/Nicks, I MUST say this one hour and 45 second live show is perhaps the best they ever were in their earlier days with Lindsey and Stevie.

Of course, it’s cuz half the show are covers from Older Mac Daze! *G*

I gotta admit, at 4:55 when they bust into Station Man, my ears stood up fast. Nice work, thru out. Great live show with Christine, John, Mic, Lindsey and Stevie . . . dig it.
