Facebook announced today that it is hiring Ted Ullyot, former aide to disgraced Atty General Alberto Gonzales as its General Counsel. FB executive Elliot Schrage crows that: “Ted’s arrival really demonstrates we’re a little more grown-up.” So what’s this Big Guy been up to? A peek at his accomplishments:
Served as a clerk for Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.Worked as the top lawyer for AOL Time Warner in Europe.Joined Gonzales at the Department of Justice as a deputy assistant and deputy staff secretary in 2003, earning a promotion to chief of staff. Along with Raul Yanes, coordinated the White House’s response to the investigation into the leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame’s identity. The case ended with Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief-of-staff Scotter Libby’s conviction. As assistant to Gonzalez when he was the White House counsel, helped craft the infamous "torture memo," which argued for ways the Bush administration could forgo the Geneva Conventions in order to prosecute the War on Terror.
I joined Facebook when Firedoglake started a fb group. I’ve appreciated tremendously the opportunity to make friends, share interests, receive and offer support to people, most of whom I’ll never be able to meet face to face. But, if Facebook sticks to its decision to use a man who justified torture and helped stonewall outing a CIA agent–among other offenses–then this grown up will be closing down her account.

This is pretty dicey, I totally agree.
Dicey…suspicious…shady…yucky!!
Reminds me of a few years back when Google was rumored to be considering Dan Senor (Paul Bremer’s sidekick when the CPA was functional (sic)) for a position in PR, or some such lunacy.
I registered with Facebook a while back and never used it, until I got an invite or two from some old friends to be in their networks, or whatever they do. Thought it might be a viable forum for activism when Talking Points Memo and some other alt-press/blogs set up shop…but just don’t feel a need to participate in more than I already do.
So I deactivated with a stern note about how FB’s selection of Ullyot, or whatever the name is, shows FB’s right-wing roots (didn’t mention the CIA roots), and to please discard my information. Don’t imagine that will do a lot, but it makes me feel better. Hell, I have to drop my daily newspaper because they sent that Obsession hatemongering DVD…dropping Facebook ain’t nuthin’…Charleey!! (Sarah Palin impersonation we do quite often!)
I too will attempt to close my facebook account. If they want to hire torture-enablers, that’s certainly their business, but I don’t have to use their service, or encourage others to do so.
In a perfect world, none of these scumbags would find employment after BushCheneyCo. I guess we’ll just have to be vigilant in not patronizing establishments that employ the crooks.
Diary Recommended.
“A little more grown up”? Because they hired an ex-DOJ torture-excusing wombat? That makes them grown up? Nope.
Thank you Laura for this news, I’m with you.
Standing with you, Laura.
Standing against torture and their enablers,
For Dan,
Heather
Me too.
Thanks for keeping us informed, Laura.
I think an FDL “Mass Quitting of Facebook” facebook group would be the best way to organize.
With a better name.
Post all about Mr. Torture enabler guy.
Tempt FB to censore us.
See how many join us in a mass simultaneous resignation/quitting.
See how many FDL FB-users would join us.
Recruit non-FLDers.
Discuss options/strategy/tactics.
We demand an anti-torture Facebook.
How about set it up as “Why is Facebook hiring a torture enabler to spy on us?” group?
digg
Nice catch, Laura. Yet another war criminal leaves his government job to make a killing in the private sector.
Glad to see it up for discussion here. My only question is what do we do to replace face book, Twitter? I don’t want to lose the ability to connect with fellow firepups, which is the only reason I use face book.
I just set up my twitter account, still messing around with my page setup, so I don’t know if it will work well enough.
Anyway, if you all are fellow twits or want to try it.. I am: http://twitter.com/eurekasprings
I hope we can persuade fb to change their mind. If not, I’ll be twittering like a bird…

My attempt at a anti-Ted Ullyot Facebook group.
Ted Ullyot for FB General Counsel? Please.
Join Us.
Spread the word.
Thanks jim, I think I managed to invite around 40 folks who have not already received an group invitation from others. Hope that helps.
I am all for leaving facebook over this but where do we migrate too? Should we give facebook a week to reconsider?
Appears it is not easy to well and truly delete facebook accounts.
Tons of Google links out there. The above was just a random choice because the title amused.
I can’t understand why any corporation could hire someone who was an enabler to war criminals!
After Watergate, when all the Nixon criminals had books about it in print, the saying was “Don’t buy books by crooks!”
Something about this seems in the same spirit as that.
Can somebody tell me again how to Recommend?
I don’t see a Recommend button, but I don’t think I have recommended this yet…
I could be wrong
Confusing, but I think once it makes recommended status, the button bails.
Do not quote me, though.
thanks, newt
I just recommended a Jane diary. The recommend button turned into an unrecommend button.
Does the unrecommend button disappear after a length of time? Sometimes I see a post with a Share button but neither a recommend nor an unrecommend button. wonder what’s up with that.
I don’t know. Some diaries have recommend links and some don’t, and I don’t know the distinction – i was making an educated guess.
