I am someone whose eyes easily glaze over when the topic turns to insurance or finance. Extreme simplification is my friend. Judging from the economically shell-shocked condition of this country, I have many such fellow travelers.
I found this gem while googling about trying to explore the basics of the Single Payer Plan. It is entertaining and educational. At one point it uses a "prom" metaphor. Works for me. Enjoy it and share it.
Here is the link, followed by some self-disclosures from the creator.

I’m a medical student, computer geek, health policy wonk, weblogger, health care activist, and all around good guy. I promise. I believe that the current health system is a mess: disorganized, wasteful, inefficient, and many times, harmful. My goal is to educate. I think there’s a lot of facts out there that we don’t hear about, and you can bet my bippy that I’m going to be a Great Equalizer if it’s at all possible.
I’m grateful for all the opportunities and experiences I’ve been able to have growing up in the US, but I think the way that we provide health insurance in this country is simply abominable. I don’t think people should have their lives destroyed, their credit ruined, and their families hurt by getting sick. It’s the lowest of the low to hit someone when they’re down, and that’s what I think happens to too many people in the US when they’re sick.
You don’t choose to get cancer, so why should you be punished by it if you don’t have insurance?
My motivation isn’t merely from an ethical or moral standpoint however–I believe that we would have a more productive economy if we had national health insurance in this country. Canada’s businesses swear by it–it’s cheaper to make cars in Canada than in Detroit for that very reason–and I’ve heard from too many people that work in jobs they hate only because they don’t want to lose their health insurance.
My interests are self-serving, too. I don’t want to work in the current system; too often it pits patients against doctors, and it’s hurting the doctor-patient relationship: the thing that allows doctors to do their best to help patients. Medicine is not the same as it used to be. We can do better.

I’ve got news for him. You get punished even you do have health insurance.
recommended! i love the video.
and i agree with bct – having health insurance doesn’t mean they’ll actually cover you.
I liked it, but it left out one key thing in the insured/uninsured couple scenario: no only does going to the ER cost more than going to a doctor’s office, the ER will CHARGE the uninsured more often several times more, because they’re not part of a company that has bargained on the costs. This makes it even more likely that the uninsured will be unable to pay.
It also left out the part about how people can be dropped from their insurance at any time, or the part where 75% of people who filed for bankruptcy for medical bills HAD insurance when they got sick.
Greenwarrior:
See this Oxdown about how they cover you. There needs to be a class action suit filed. They’ve been stealing tens of millions, maybe hundreds of millions a year over the last 20 years.

This finance decision should unglaze your eyes..’g’. Of the 55 page PDF filed today, this is the big one. Fines against these people should be directed toward a single payer plan. The majority of these tax dodgers are likely very rich tax dodgers.

“INTRODUCTION – SUMMARY OF ARGUMENT
The facts that bring the parties into court are not disputed:
1. The Internal Revenue Service is investigating as many as 52,000 unknown U.S.
taxpayers who flouted their obligations to their government, by refusing to disclose their secret
accounts at UBS AG, one of the largest banks in Switzerland. The IRS seeks the identities of
those account holders (and other account information) from a Swiss bank that regularly
conducted business in secret within the United States, and systematically violated U.S. law. “

Israel does it again. If they were brown this would be called piracy and kidnapping. There are 4 Americans among the passengers on the Spirit and Obama was contacted before the boat sailed. He obviously didn’t tell the Israelis to back off. Or he did and they ignored him.

” Within the past hour the Free Gaza boat, the SPIRIT OF HUMANITY, was boarded by the Israeli Navy, and according to Free Gaza’s Tweet, http://twitter.com/freegazaorg, the Israeli military has issued a statement saying they have taken over the boat.
My contact at the U.S. State Department returned my call 40 minutes ago to say that they are in touch with the Israeli government and have been since the boat was surrounded some 6 hours ago. Overall, our State Department seeks to assure the safety of all on board and would like to see the boat get through as it is carrying humanitarian relief and cement to the people of Gaza, specifically aiding non-governmental organizations.
This is the right time to call your Senators and Representative to ask their senior staffer for foreign policy to place 2 urgent calls on your behalf. Ask them to call the Israeli Embassy and to call the U.S. State Department – and to call you back with what they learn. “

” Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Craig Fugate met today with Maj. Gen. Yair Golan of the Israeli Defense Forces Home Front Command (IDF/HFC), continuing to foster a working relationship with Israel and bolstering the exchange of information on common emergency management practices.
Administrator Fugate and Maj. General Golan will serve as co-chairs of an emergency management work group designed to discuss problems and issues and to exchange information on a variety of topics such as long-term community recovery, exercise programs, policies and procedures. “

The US gov’t co-signs loans to Israel.
**************
” The Finance Ministry announced Tuesday that the United States has re-approved its Israel loan guarantee program of $9 billion over three years. The program was initially launched in 2003.
At the time, the U.S. Congress approved the loan guarantees to help Israel deal with a devastating economic crisis caused by a wave of Palestinian Authority terror attacks, and to handle anticipated defense and economic costs associated with the war in Iraq.
Borrowed funds must be used within the pre-1967 borders and it is agreed that the amount of the guarantees can be reduced by an amount equal to Israel’s expenditures on settlements in the territories. “

BB, thanks for the horrifying updates. I will say my prayers for the humanitarian workers and begin to make those calls. What is wrong with Israel AND the U.S.government and our ostrich citizenry?
thanks!
