Somewhere in an attic room of Rachel Maddow’s home there must be a painting where her expression is cynical, her eyes have no twinkle, her smile is ghastly and her greed has turned her once beautiful face into something that looks like a goblin. But on her MSNBC television show her expression is genuine, her eyes twinkle with goodness, her smile is endearing and her still beautiful face shines with sincerity and humor.
Or maybe in a hidden room, of which only she has the key, is a secret laboratory where she brews up in a test tube a secret formula that with a gulp of its bitter gall she feels her conscience fade into nothingness and her ethics shrivel up into dust as she feels her lower desires for fame and fortune grow into a monster. Then she can go on her MSNBC television show and distort the truth without any shame. Meanwhile, thanks to that painting up in the attic, she doesn’t look like a monster. She look just like the woman I used to admire and trust. But she isn’t. Like Darth Vader, when she turned to the Dark Side in a sense she killed the good woman she used to be.
Tonight she reported on Obama’s appointment of Jack Lew as his new chief of staff. Here’s his biography according to Dr. Maddow. He’s been an advisor to President Clinton, worked for Secretary State Hillary Clinton as a deputy director and was Obama’s director of the office of management and budget. That’s it!
Oh wait. There’s more.
Eric Cantor, a supposed enemy of Obama, had good things to say about Mr. Lew. He praised him right in the midst of the brinksmanship of the debt ceiling fiasco last summer. Rachel gave us the money quote where Cantor praised Lew saying no one was more prepared or more in tune with numbers that he was.
Rachel Maddow then turned up her twinkle to an eleven and beamed at us to comment on the ultimate goodness of Obama appointing this hard working civil servant, why it might bring back civility to Washington. Imagine that. End of story.
Up in that attic room the painting must have changed. A new level of corruption must suddenly have been apparent in the picture. Any one gazing on it must realize it portrays a women who has sold her soul, a woman who has no problem lying to a nation through omission, a woman who would spend hours explaining how terrible a crime is and then stand behind the one way mirror and lie through her teeth that she doesn’t see the culprit who committed the crime when she knows exactly that he is the one on the end as she fingers the pay off check hidden in her pocket.
For she did spend hours explaining the crime. Over and over on her show a few years back she used various props and metaphors to explain to her audience how Wall Street banks, like Citigroup, defrauded investors with toxic derivatives they knew were junk, making billions off this fraud. She lamented how they got away with it after being bailed out by TARP. Oh, yes, Dr. Maddow understood the crime. She was eloquent in explaining it.
But now she describes Jack Lew and just conveniently forgets he was the Chief Operating Officer of Citigroup’s Alternate Investments from 2006 until Secretary Clinton recruited him. She doesn’t recall that during his tenure Citigroup’s investors went from holding a wealth of over 200 billion dollars to under 20 billion. She has amnesia that part of those alternative investments was a hedge fund that made billions by betting against the housing market while Citigroup convinced those investors who lost hundreds of billions to bet on the same market, the very crime she so eloquently reported once upon a time. She just doesn’t know that while Jack Lew was at Citgroup that he lobbied and got a bailout from TARP.
No. She may have sold her soul, but she hasn’t lost her mind. She knows all of this. She is completely aware that she is editing the truth, leaving out the most important part of the truth, so the remaining truth becomes a lie. Dr. Maddow is now a liar.
Ah, but her task isn’t done. It’s not enough that she manipulates the truth so that her audience will continue to believe that Obama is a man of the people and not a toady of Wall Street. Now she has to join in the frenzy of bringing down Mitt Romney as, well, as someone like…, like Jack Lew. The Republicans who despise Romney are doing it because they want to keep him from getting the nomination. But Dr. Maddow knows Romney will get the nomination. So she’s prepping her audience for the big lie next fall: Obama is on our side and Romney is on Wall Street’s side and we better support Obama or we’ll get this villain Romney. How delightful to instill this propaganda in her audience’s consciousness while using clips of Republicans themselves.
A sane person watching this wants to yell at her over and over as she describes how bad Romney is due to his disaster capitalism, “You mean like Jack Lew?”
Then finally along comes Dylan Rattigan. How creative this is! Bring on a man who has created a reputation for calling out the financial crimes of our system to talk about Romney with her. Well, Rattigan has to speak more truth than Rachel. He has to point out it’s not just Romney. He has to point out it’s standard operating procedure. He has to point out all those dratted Republicans support the same stuff.
But he stops short of saying, “Just like Jack Lew.” No, you won’t hear that on Dr. Maddow’s show on MSNBC.
No if you say that on MSNBC you will be fired. You might have your integrity but you won’t have fame and fortune anymore. You might be able to speak the truth on Current TV, but it will not be high def, it won’t have good graphics, and your audience share will drop drastically. You will no longer have assistants fawning all over you and plush limos picking you up from first class seats to drive you to high class hotels filled with expensive gift baskets when you want to report on things somewhere else than your regular studio.
But in this strange case of Dr. Maddow and Mr. Lew she doesn’t need her integrity anymore. She’s got that magic painting and that secret formula so she can be a lying monster and never look like one.

I saw the real Rachel Maddow the night she first rolled her “friend” Keith Olbermann under the bus November 2010. She drove the bus over him a few months later, thereafter discarding what remained of her previous reputation of integrity.
I used to never miss her MSNBC show. Now, I hardly ever tune in, and, when I do, find her constant girlish giggling tiresome….
Grow up, Rachel. You’re nearly forty and very distant from the little girl who grew up to trade her soul in a devil’s bargain for the stardom she always wanted…
I used to catch her show daily. But she lost me when in 2010 summer, she lost her bearings and did a propaganda piece about “Obama enacting sweeping progressive legislation since FDR”. That crap was shown at Netroots nation when Pelosi spoke. ANd then came the electoral blood bath. Strangely she was fulfilling the conservatove caricature of out-of-touch librul media. Then her pimping of the Iraq withdrawal last year from Iraq. yes I need to call out Keith Olbermnann too) – MSNBC was excluively “chosen” by the White house to be a pimp. And recently her blood dripping laughter on Bill Maher’s show after Ghaddafi was murdered. She has become a cheerleader for wars.
So maybe if Jack Lew didn’t get spiked as being someone who defrauded investors at Citigroup by either Maddow or Ratigan, it’s because he didn’t directly do that, did he?
Here is what happened according to Huffington Post:
So Lew was the COO of a fund that was a fund of hedge funds, investing in the funds of others, and one of the funds it invested in was a fund by Paulson, that was later found out to have bet against its investors. Quite a different tale than the one you are telling and accusing Rachel Maddow of. Maybe the painting is in your attic, not hers.
Maddow is a shill. She will never talk about the ethnic cleansing going on in Palestine nor will she criticize her boy Obama. I stopped tuning in to any MSNBC shows midway through the healthcare charade and I don’t think I’ve missed anything except propaganda and deceit, along with the typical disdain shown by the little coterie of pundits for normal working people who are slowly drowning in the manipulated economy.
I was on a local radio show in Minneapolis. It was on KFAI a community radio show. Myself and the host, Lydia Howell were doing a best five and worst five of the year. We called it the naughty and nice list.
We choose As #5 on the nice list (drum roll please)
OBAMA- yup you heard right. President Obama. Because he has exposed all those meaningless shills out there. Including Rachel Madddow, Eddie Schultz and almost everyone on MSNBC and Air America
All these folks have not just lost their integrity. They have also lost their credibility. That makes them much less effective as propaganda tools (hmm tools-yeah)
Thank You president Obama. You have done a fine job inn exposing yourself, your party and all those “progressive” shills out there.
Maddow, a DNC propagandist,it’s good that people are waking up.
Maddow,Shultz & like you pointed out all those so called “libruls”
with radio show, these people are no better than Limbaugh,Hannity etc, etc.
They all lie to protect Corporate interest with their DNC versus GOP fallacy and in the meantime the Corporations keep stomping on our necks.
As for Maddow, goosh! a terrible sick person just like all the others.
I haven’t watched MSNBC for over 2yrs,it’s easy to do when you realize that they are just broadcasting propaganda for the wealthy.
Don’t reward their crap with your viewership folks.
Amen
Who even still bothers to watch MSNBC, what so obviously has become the Dem Party/Obama propaganda machine? Ratigan is the only one I have the stomach to watch anymore and even he has too many of the Dem Party operatives slinging their tribal bullshit (unchallenged). His loud and verbose style of delivery gets annoying as well. Oh, and btw, Maddow doesn’t even come close to the King of Convenient Omission, her weekend cohort Chris Hayes, who refined his skill while penning for The Nation. They are all doing what they are payed by their corporate masters to do, shill for the political elite. Nothing more, nothing less.
Thanks for posting this – I was about to do a similar post but I doubt it would have been as well written.
Lew is no evil mastermind – and indeed he is a minor cog in the derivative world that Greenspan’s refusal to regulate the investment banks built by taking the clean, logical interest rate derivative work of the actuaries (Clancy and Tilly in the 70′s) and selling the idea with the enhancements of “correlations” that bright economists/math guru types thought they had found.
But on the larger point – I love Maddow, have met her (she has gone to state fairs here as she lives in the western part of the state), and respect her intelligence. But the poster is correct in that the management of NBC have their shows on MSNBC working as Obama/DNC propaganda suppliers. Heck NBC is in bed with Mitt in that his Bain capital is co-owner with them of the Weather channel(via the deal with NBCUniversal with Blackstone also an owner). It’s one more indication that the corporate world got its wish in the defeat of Hillary and indeed wants Obama to have a second term.
A short list:
1) Right-wing crazies who think Obama is a socialist.
2) Pundits who claim Obama is progressive.
The first are close-minded and easily-led, but, for what it’s worth, seem to be sincere in their own deluded beliefs.
The second are hypocritical liars, who, for money and access, do their best to lead the close-minded and easily led.
On the danger to society scale, I’d say #2 beats out #1.
Amen to all of the above. I stopped watching MSNBC when Keith Olbermann was asked to leave. When Cenk of the Young Turks left, it reinforced my decision. I then looked and found Link TV with so many good news outlets and documentaries. I have not looked back.
I also contacted MSNBC and let them know that I stopped watching and why. I even let them know that I would not watch their prison shows, which I liked.
Link TV- channel 375 on satellite TV. Check it out folks. they are the firedoglake of the TV world.
Yeah, Greenwald has less substance but the same general part of the article woven into his piece on Lew, with more damning effect today. It’s all extremely disingenuous as far as I’m concerned. I don’t mind that people hate Obama, that’s quite alright. I don’t mind it that people find MSNBC or even Rachel Maddow objectionable for whatever reason, if they want to. I certainly don’t mind it that Greenwald, for instance, takes offense to Lew getting a bonus after Citigroup took TARP funds — in general bonuses of any size should have been off the table under such circumstances in my opinion.
But to misconstrue the circumstances of this investment — $18 Million into Paulson’s fund — not even specifying which of his deals, just his fund, out of $407 million in the Multi-Adviser section in a bigger Alternative Investments Fund, that made up 6.5 percent of Paulson’s fund in 2007, and not known how much of his deal with Goldman Sachs at all, if anything, — as being a major player in betting against investors like Paulson is just plain lying, and isn’t justified by who the participants are and whether there’s a general consensus that everybody doesn’t like them.
I blame the Wizard behind the curtain. His name is “Phil Griffen” and he’s the top nanny at MSNBC who fires people at the drop of hat, always working for Obama’s re-election. But take heart, the Democrats are scared shitless of people like us because we could throw a close election to Obamney! This latest omission from Rachel is proof of the fear that MSNBC and Democrats have regarding us! Phil fired Cenk for the same reason he ordered Rachel to ignore Lew’s Wall Street past. He knows we’re pissed and doesn’t want to stoke the fire! I think Phil reads FDL. Hi, Phil!
Rachel Maddow: from national treasure to national disgrace in three short years.
I was wondering whether or not she dropped off the air considering she is never included in the morning post. She used to always be there. The morning post at FDL used to be a recap of Rachel Maddow’s show. How far we’ve come. Can’t believe people used to snarl at me because I called her out when she was still the darling of this site.
Obama proved that the country’s first black president could be just as corrupt and unscrupulous as any of his white predecessors.
Maddow proved that the first mainstream (out) lesbian progressive media star could be just as bad a craven corporatist sellout whore and all the straight ones before her.
The Nation is a joke. Vanden Heuvel wrote a blurb for On History, a book by Tariq Ali and Oliver Stone. She actually had the nerve to characterize Stone as a provocative and radical voice – Stone the man who made the puff movie on Dubya.
The propaganda machines for both wings of the Money Party are exactly the same.
The sad truth is the propaganda bullshit works on enough people who won’t probe deep enough. The truth is, money talks and Maddow and the rest at MSNBC and a few other places put that above everything else.
I’m afraid we are fucked this election. If there is a glimmer of hope, perhaps the Greens or some other liberal indie party will crack about 10% of the vote!
As for BO or Romney…who cares.
Yeah,
Why would anyone have a problem with a Citibank hedge funder deep in the heart of the White House? At least they got rid of that Goldman-Sachs guy anyway. Thank God we are finally going anti-Wall Street! Go Team!
cbsunglass brings some daylight to the Lew reality as others try to spin Lew criticism as being lies, danmned lies!
Come on people, Lew is a banker, a huckster, a defrauder and a thief with no morals.
But then, so is our Executive branch and the rest of our government and country.
You can’t HIDE or cry details about these things folks, they are not lies.
Hayall yeh AMEN! ;-)
The shills own it all, or rather, work for those who own it all.
There ARE no real progs in the MSM, and if there ARE some they are not allowed to speak lie proggies.
WHo cares tho, this is old proggy news. ;-)
Look, she had some good moments as did Okberman before MSNBC was ordered to take a more conservative DNC inspired tack.
It’s old history to most of us, we know it.
No need to pound all over FDL or anyone here and rehash what we already know.
Bingo.
I was very careful not to say that it was Lew who did the shenanigans with the hedge fund fraud. But it was a Citigroup fiasco. The criminal that Maddow will no longer point out is Citigroup. Why? Because one of their big wigs is not Obama’s chief of staff.
Do you have any doubt that if McCain was president and Lew was a Republican that Maddow would have reported this with no mention at all of Citigroup or his involvement with them or the things that happened at that time?
Rcc’d LibWing . . . nothing we don’t know, but heck ya used the Zane Grey mirror thing and a few others AND ya exposed further Lew . . . who is another corporate raider and shill for the 1% status quo.
Well done on those parts and thanks . . . . your critics demeaning your diary due to ‘details’ of the LEVEL of Lew’s evilness is laughable and completely miss the point you make about him, Rach and Obama and the 1%.
;-)
Might ya be thinking of Dorian Gray? ;o)
Rachel has done a lot of good work. On the other hand, for whatever reasons, she studiously avoids certain topics, e.g., the Israel/Palestine conflict.
As Glenzilla noted yesterday, she “harshly condemned” Obama’s appointment of Bill Daley less than a year ago:
So, did she get into trouble with MSNBC management for that? Or what?
In any case, I think the condemnations of here are somewhat “over the top.”
Larue, it is a lie to say that Lew was involved in Paulson’s bet against the investors. Plain and simple. And that is what this author and Greenwald have asserted. What they have done is guilt by association, which if done by the Right is called McCarthyism. That he is a banker is a given. A member of the 1%? Sure.
A defrauder and a huckster? Prove it.
Be fair and honest, or don’t come out to play.
Money, for many, has a nasty habit of diluting ones principles.
Maddow is no different.
You were careful, these others were not. And in this case, LibWingofLibWing went on to use it to tar Maddow for not ‘revealing’ Lew’s crime. Well, she didn’t reveal it because he didn’t commit it.
This is where I part ways with Greenwald, and with many at FDL. I find it disgusting to take a public figure and assume that any and all accusations can be made just because the consensus is that the figure is hated. No way. Accusations should be made when there is substance to them.
And to do it, over and over and over, whenever somebody becomes a hated quantity, like Maddow has here, or like Obama has more generally in blogosphere circles, diminishes this place, not Maddow or Obama.
Do I know what would have been reported by Maddow if McCain were president? She got her show only a couple of months before Obama became president, so I have no idea what she would have been reporting by now. And nobody has any idea what McCain would have been doing, either.
Ah, I am LibWingofLibWing; I wrote the article and called out Maddow for not revealing the crimes of Citigroup and Lew being a Citigroup executive when giving his biography.
I stand by my diary. Maddow intentionally censored anything that might look bad in her report in order to promote Obama, including Citigroup’s crimes, which she spent hours discussing in the past, and Lew’s history of being a Citigroup executive.
I don’t hate her. I just have lost all respect for her.
You love maddow?
I can respect her intelligence, but she’s an amoral pied piper and carnival barker. Can’t stand her.
Is being the evil mastermind of criminality the level one has to rise to when you are a banker?
If you drive the getaway car in the old fashioned one-at-time bank robbery Texas you can be sent to death row for it. It’s not necessary to prove criminal intent at this level.
I commented on what Neil Barofsky had to say about Lew here:
http://news.firedoglake.com/2012/01/10/the-roundup-for-january-10-2012/#comment-166728
Oh, come on! Yes. You. Do.
hagiography is what she gave.
Ondellete:
ondellete thinks she knows what is in our hearts as regards to Obama, and postulates all the time that we say things about him merely because we hate him, according to her, and by extension those feelings are/can be driven by racism.
So accordingly, all these associates of Citigroup and current and former criminal regime deserve the benefit of the doubt, but she can accuse us of these things based her personal judgements.
She smart, but full of crap.
in regards to Oliver Stone, I don’t think that either of these two are willing pied pipers like Maddow is.
Oliver Stone was effectively forced to apologize for suggesting that the Jewish lobby controls Washington’s foreign policy, and that Hitler’s actions should be put into context, and for saying that Jews control the media
W wasn’t exactly a puff piece. He portrayed Bush as an idiot and as the not favorite son.
Excuse me. I mistook you for Larue, who didn’t lie. You said,
See, unfortunately, the part of Alternative Investments that “was a hedge fund that made billions by betting against the housing market while Citigroup convined those investors who lost hundreds of billions to bet on the same market…” was actually the Multi-Adviser section, worth only $407 Million, not “billions”, and of that only a small amount went into Paulson’s hedge fund, one of the transactions of which was proven to be that Goldman Sachs convinced investors to bet on billions on the housing market while betting the other way and making Paulson, not Citigroup and Lew, billions of dollars.
So you are a liar on that note completely. Then asserting that because Maddow didn’t drill Lew for it knowingly and complicitly is again, as I said in my first round, a false assertion. She didn’t do so because he didn’t do it. That you compound it again and again because, well, Maddow’s a shill and any accusation against a shill is fine, is just fucking lying through your teeth.
That would be LibWingofLibWing I was replying to. This stupid nesting system is for the birds.
As for you, shekissesfrogs, people, or organizations, accused of criminality, under the U.S. system, do, in fact, receive the benefit of the doubt under the law. That you conspicuously and openly advocate otherwise is telling.
And the public figure I was talking about was Rachel Maddow, not Barack Obama. You, like so many others, use defense of Obama under any circumstances as a crime in and of itself, which is first rate McCarthyism.
I did not say any such thing about racism. My comment on racism was censored by the board, so you don’t know what I said about racism.
Hey, it’s possible for The People to trust that a Wall Street hedge fund manager/COO is a good person whose advice and service to the president will represent their interests well, isn’t it?
Haw haw haw haw haw haw haw haw haw hardy har har – I crack myself up sometimes.
ondelette, sophist is your name.
In the real world justice is for those that can afford it. I’m sure you know this, but for arguments sake you’ll fake it, and then mischaracterize the meaning of what I said, that I openly advocate for persecution fo the innocent.
You think you know what other people are thinking, build up straw men and then make claims or accusals based on your own projections, but you have a different way of judging Obama or the bankers that burned down the economy and and robbing the western world blind. Mens rea must be proven by admission for them, according to you we can’t accuse, let a lone convict based on ignorance of the law or the damage they have wrought- like every one else.
You are a hypocrite.
