As you know, I have been involved in election monitoring, election protection and voter rights after since I sat watching the fiasco of 2000 on my television. That got my up off the couch and determined to make things different in 2001.
It has been a building proccess since then. Not just me, but literally thousands who felt as I do, that it won’t fix itself, YOU have to make it happen.
All over the country yesterday, lawyers from the Democratic Lawyers Councils, working for free to ensure a fair election, helped solve problems at the polls, helped get court orders so voters could vote, fielded questions from voters calling into hot lines, and generally made me proud to call myself a lawyer.
Below, I’ve quoted an email circualted to the NYS Democratic Lawyers Council, just to give you some idea of the magnitude of the effort and the the numbers involved.

thanx for all you do and all you’ve done lhp
the first step is the hardest, this journey will be long and hard fought but we make headway repairing the damage, mending the wounds, relclaiming what has been lost
LHP — I knew you must be out there doing the work. If we learned nothing from 2000 and 2004 — being a voter is NOT a spectator sport. The sheer numbers of voters who were out over the last month and yesterday who KNEW, in their bones, that they were prepared to do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING to make sure they got to vote and that their vote was counted..as they had cast it…that, in my opinion, was what carried the day. THAT is one of the big victories of this election.
Guys, this is part of the genius of Howard Dean’s 50 state strategy.
Remember that? would Obama or anybody else been competative in so many states if not for moblizing EVERYWHERE.
there were literally thousand and thousands of laywers out there doing the voter protection/fair elections thing yesterday. Not just for the DLC’s, for the ACLU and a whole host of non partisan groups and bi-partisan groups.
You knw there ARE republicans who care about the right to vote just as much as we do. I know quite a few of them.
Yep – there are a lot of good Republicans out there – and a lot of them voted for Obama, too.
