Malachy Kilbride is a member of the Bradley Manning Support Network

A group of about 20 local DC area people, who are affiliated with the Bradley Manning Support Network, arrived at the DNC headquarters to meet with a representative of the Obama 2012 campaign to deliver our letter with our concerns for Bradley Manning (see below).
We were met at the main entrance of the DNC by security who refused entrance to about 4 people from the group who wanted to go inside and deliver our letter and to request that it be faxed to President Obama. The security guards told us to get off the front steps as were on private property. We explained that we were there on business. They refused us entry. We said we would not leave. Police were called. US Capitol Police showed up in four police cars and one police wagon. We talked with the police and explained were there with important business we needed to engage the campaign with and President Obama. After a while the US Capitol Police all left presumably because they didn’t want to get involved, probably telling the security guards that it wasn’t their jurisdiction and that we hadn’t broken any laws.
A little while later a representative from the DNC came out listened and spoke with us. He agreed to take the letter inside to his superiors. I asked who his superior is and he told me it is a secret. He went inside. He told us to wait and we did. The security guard again demanded we leave the main entrance but we still refused. A DC Metropolitan Police squad car arrived with one police officer. He asked us to leave and we refused explaining that we had just had meeting and were told to wait. A little while later the DNC representative returned, said he had scanned the letter, and was awaiting word from his secret superior if he could fax it on to President Obama.
Text of letter:
September 6, 2012
President Barack Obama, The White House, Washington , D.C. 20500
Dear Mr. President:
As members of peace and justice organizations opposed to your continuation of the Bush administration’s failed wars, we are writing to urge you to do the right thing on behalf of Private First Class Bradley Manning. As you know he has been imprisoned and, at times, tortured during his incarceration. It is alleged he leaked documents to Wikileaks and possibly other material, including a video of U.S. soldiers committing war crimes in Iraq . It is ironic that none of the soldiers who killed unarmed Iraqi civilians have been charged with a crime. But Pfc. Manning is charged and accused of releasing documents which were embarrassing to the U.S. government, as they showed diplomatic and military support for a number of dictatorships in the Middle East .
It is very important that you retract your statement made at a fundraiser in April 2011, regarding PFC Manning’s guilt. It was astonishing to hear you say, “He broke the law.” How can Pfc. Manning receive a fair trial when his commander-and-chief convicts him prior to a court martial?
As you know, for the first eleven months of his detention, Pfc. Manning was held in solitary isolation. He was not allowed regular exercise or sunlight, and was even forced to stand at attention naked. UN Chief Investigator on Torture Juan Mendez has declared these conditions “cruel, inhuman and degrading.” Recently, Pfc. Manning’s defense revealed they have discovered emails which show orders to hold him in these inhuman conditions came from a three-star general who ignored the warnings of brig psychologists, and was likely acting with political motive.
Though he’s yet to be convicted of any crime, PFC Manning has already been severely punished. If for no other reason, you could pardon him of all charges. This would call attention to the need for respecting the international human rights of all prisoners.
There was no harm done by the release of the Wikileaks documents. In fact, the documents helped ignite the Arab Spring.
And it can be argued that the document release played a part in bringing an end to the Iraq War. During the 2008 campaign, a majority of citizens believed that U.S. forces should be withdrawn from Iraq . Many people voted for you because they believed that you would end the war.
Unfortunately, you sought to keep troops in Iraq past the originally planned 2011 deadline. Documents allegedly released by PFC Manning helped U.S. citizens understand why the war had not ended sooner. These reasons included a failure of the command to adequately discipline soldiers who would discredit the U.S. military in the eyes of the world by wrongfully killing civilians.
Bradley Manning has a conscience. Words attributed to him in May 2010 suggest he acted because he wanted people to see the truth because without information, you cannot make informed decisions. You made a similar statement in May 2011: In the 21st century, information is power; the truth cannot be hidden; and the legitimacy of governments will ultimately depend on active and informed citizens. We now ask that you honor those words by freeing American truth-teller Bradley Manning.

Thanks for writing this, Malachy. And for being there. You’ve been tireless in your support of Bradley Manning, Dan Choi and so many others attempting to shine a light on government malfeasance.
Your constant commitment to your principles is an inspiration. Thanks for all you do.
Thanks for your courageous efforts, Malachy! Talk about an overreaction… please keep us posted
No kidding. Someone walks out and says “thank you very much,” takes the letter back inside, no story, no distraction from the convention they’re trying to get everyone to pay attention to so desperately.
Sometimes the political malpractice just boggles the mind.
We must prosecute whistleblowers like Bradley Manning even if we have to break the law to do it. See also Whistleblowers – http://newprog.org/blog/2011/11/09/whistleblowers-under-democraticrepublican-uniparty
But…but..the Democrats are the good guys! They’re the liberals! They’re for us regular people! They’re not like those bad, mean Republicans!
This is essentially what I get when I point out stuff like this incident to my low-information (but sometimes surprisingly well-educated) friends. It’s difficult being a Cassandra.
“Stand next to fat people, you’ll always look thin.” — Kate Radley
This is where the breakdown happens. The Convention is all about inclusiveness, and the DLC is all about secrecy.
I also want to express my admiration for Malachy McBride and his compatriots for acting like citizens in the face of an increasingly authoritarian government that would rather we act like subjects.
Thanks for this courageous work, and great letter!
[OT, but I can't believe there are still commenters claiming the FDL front page has been absorbed into the Obamabot veal pen (and having the gall to actually use the term!). I mean, with the ongoing Manning support, Occupy Supply, third-party debate inclusion action, Kevin Gosztola getting accosted outside the DNC by orange-shirt goons (is orange the new brown?), etc., etc.]
Malachy was with us at Dan Choi’s trials last week (yes, trials). He’s what’s known in common parlance as a mensch.
Thank you Bradley Manning Support Group for the courageous and necessary action that exposes the “Friendlier Fascists” for what they truly are, thank you Malachy Kilbride for the report.
Where are all the Obamamaniacs to remind us of how everyone to the left of Otto von Bismark owes this party and this candidate its total allegiance?
Why does DailyKos come to mind. I gave up the blog because of its 24/7 Obama hum job.
I believe Manning to be a genuine American hero. I also believe he will be found guilty and sentenced to a long term in a federal prison.
To seek justice from the unjust, and this administration has proven itself such many times over, may be a necessary part of the equation certainly, but reaching the people of this nation with the truth, as Manning and Assange have tried to do, is so very difficult, and so very very important.
Here’s a picture of the ‘secret supervisor’.

So for 99%ers what DNC stands for is Do Not Contact (just mindlessly vote for whoever we tell you).
“My supervisor is a secret” has to be one of the most Soviet-sounding statements ever made by a party apparatchik in America. Was this demonstration at the Old Kremlin?
Malachy, you big problem was not knowing the double secret handshake of the DNC.
That cracked me up.
These guys (DNC, Obama) are a disgrace.
While I do not agree with what Manning did, his supporters deserve the right to have their voice heard and to advocate for him.
What is odd is for the administration to parade around like they are progressive, and then throw progresses under the bus every chance they get.
And many of those progressives come back for more.
More letter delivery?
The Oregonian: “Paul Ryan’s Portland visit at the Governor Hotel tomorrow may close some food carts; Earl Blumenauer calls for ‘cash mob’ Friday.”
The letter is an extraordinary citizen document.
Only you would know for sure if the whole world is watching firedoglake.com.
If you learn that the whole world’s not watching FDL, might you suggest ways to make the letter reach more eyes and ears?
TFAYD
Thankfully Bradley Manning is in a prison not a cave in Yemen where his sentence of death could be carried out while he is still a “suspected” terrorist. I know this is droning on and on. The Gulag is in charge and we must expose them. Patriots all who accomplished this act of civics.
So Obama yet remains silent to “Pardon Don Siegelman” and “Pardon Bradley Manning”?
It’s all part of the new Transparency in Government for the 21st Century” program that Obama promised during his 2008 campaign.
Excellent observation.
Thanks for the link. Signed.
The petition for Don Siegelman is at a secure (https) site.
Thanks

As a registered Democrat since 1978, I hereby move the Democratic Party strike the word “Democratic” from its name.
I’m certainly going to strike the words “Democratic Party” from my voter registration.
It’s about time you peasants stopped bothering your betters, you people should know your place.
Bradley Manning was fulfilling his pledge to support and defend the Constitution, rather than being a compliant conspirator in covering the crimes committed in illegal actions/warfare, and you don’t support his actions. Unbelievable!
I don’t support the wholesale release of mass papers that may also involve people who have nothing to do with the action being spotlighted.
Targeted release, specific papers relating to specific shady dealings, OK.
Kind of like releasing the credit card data of everyone at a bank while trying to spotlight some shady action by the bank relating to some credit cards.
Well, as I often remark to acquaintances who are still on the fence, “This is the real Obama.” I say it with regard to assassination minus due process, to drone attacks that kill innocent men, women and children, to faux health care reform and to austerity proposals–and I say it now. How anyone who identifies as a leftist can look at this president’s appalling track record and still feel comfortable voting for him is beyond me.
Notice that it is a Party man, and not a government bureaucrat, just like in the old Soviet Union. The US is getting to look more and more like the USSR, except that the clothes are better and you can watch pornography if that’s what turns you on. For the rest, the rooms are bugged, and people are disappeared, and we have an emerging Gulag in the privatized prison system.
You may recall that Assange had all the papers vetted and some names blacked out. He did not do a mass release, but worked through newspapers.
Thank you very much, Malachy. It is so important to have this kind of peaceful confrontation documented and presented as well as you have done – bravo! And thank you to Firedoglake for keeping these judicial confrontations front and center; it is heartening beyond measure to see citizens stepping up to the plate when the cry goes out to ‘make me do it.’
Bravo!
The American who has been POTUS since early 2009,the American who is at top of this D Party as leader, the American who now is trying to look good by making the the Rs look bad? This American — Barack Obama — has been on the wrong side of the WikiLeaks,Assange,Manning etc. storytell from Page 1.
If the D Party were close to being the “big difference” it seeks to contrast itself with the Rs around the story above would not have taken place. But all the Ds have these days is trying to look good compared to the Rs. Hardly a difficult thing to do in view of the Rs being what they tend to be.Ds deserve very little credit for largely trying to sell themselves as better political party and purveyor of politics/policies using the Rs as counterexample.
The story above reveals in a plain and easy to see way why the Ds need to either get a whole lot better or go away and be no more.
We get plenty of fearmongering from Dbots about how bad the Rs are. The Rs indeed are bad. The Ds are not much better far too often by choice and intent. Both of these two national political parties are way past ripe in regards to what they stand for,lie about,do,do not do and seem to think they deserve no challenges politically over for doing now year after year which is becoming decade after decade.
Sorry to poke a pin in the Dbots/Obots party balloons again here but where was Barack Obama while the story above took place? Where has Barack Obama been since Day One on Bradley Manning? Bradley Manning is being buried alive by who again? Barack Obama,D,POTUS thats who.
Imagine if Barack Obama were as interested in shielding Bradley Manning as POTUS Obama is interested in shielding Wall St,Big Banks and warcriminals like G.W.Bush,R.B.Cheney and B.H.Obama?
Imagine that.
I gave up Daily Kos when Mr. Kos opined “Fuck Ralph Nader and fuck anyone who voted for him.” After Obama’s flip-flop on retroactive immunity for the telephone companies during the 2008 campaign, I did vote for Nader.
It’s odd. I’ve met Kos in person and he seems like a likeable sort, but that drove me away, pure and simple.
No, no, THIS is the secret supervisor!
Thanks, Malachy! What you are doing is vital. Bradley Manning and Dan Choi, and Don Siegelman and many others are genuine heroes.
They’re Ds…they put the Dissonance in Cognitive Dissonance.
WTF? The Obama CAMPAIGN?
Obama is President, but his campaign people have no authority.
“As a registered Democrat since 1978, I hereby move the Democratic Party strike the word “Democratic” from its name.”
The Republicans have already done that, and years ago. Am I alone in thinking the universal right wing penchant for calling that party the “DemocRAT Party” is a bit more than annoying and petty…Why they make the sophomoric efforts of the few here who defend all things DemocRAT by distortion of its critics postings seem trivial by comparison.
