Good morning! When your owners have decided that they are through having you feed and admire them, pull them up right here for some kitty pictures and stories.
Really nothing to report here. Kuroneko has finally gotten used to the new side on my sofa and she’s starting to use it to scratch, which is great as that was the intention of doing it to begin with.
I always worry when it’s cold outside because I don’t like leaving the furnace on when I’m at work but I can’t leave her to be cold all day while I’m away. It’s an electric furnace though so I suppose that it’s no more likely to catch fire than any other electric appliance. The best I can do is keep the filter changed and try not to be such a worry wart. I sometimes make a nest for her with blankets but she never uses it, preferring to do her own nesting.
I have a request for our community: I’m hoping OmAli will stop by because I tried to email her a few weeks ago to help support Richard’s cats but the email bounced back at me. I’m not sure if I copied it wrong or what but maybe I can get one of you who knows my own email to give me her contact information? Thanks a bunch!
On to this week’s pic of the pics!
Check out this video of, (not actually), Swedish skydiving cats. Meeeeeeoooooooowwwwwww!
Kuroneko picture of the week: Kuroneko sometimes finds that little arrow thingy that moves on the screen fascinating.
This week’s obligatory cute kitten picture is a two-fer. The tortie makes me think of Richard for some reason. Awwww. Via lolcats.
I hope everybody has a wonderful week. It’s Thanksgiving so make sure your pets are safe if you have a houseful of people or are traveling but above all, have a safe and happy one. Whatever your plans, please be sure to set aside some time to spend with whatever animals share your life. They are simply devoted to us and we owe it to them to treat them like the monarchs they are.

Good morning cat people! Yes, I know that arrow thingy is called a “cursor”, so don’t give me a hard time. ;)
Thanks Margaret, it occurs to me that a food post for cats might feature a Turkey, like today’s – although keep the bones out of what you give them.
Hey, it is the crack of dawn here, lol. Yes, of course the cats are fed, and honestly, they never torment me out of bed for their breakfast, maybe cuz they know it is the first thing we do here in the morning.
I will watch that skycat vid, but dang, Margaret, it is too crazy to imagine.
Watch for an e-mail. I donated to Rolling Jubilee in Richard’s name b/c Om said she had enough scratch by the time I had the money after my bills got paid.
Done, and done, that vid is scary! Can you imagine? Actually, it is disturbing. But also a bit funny.
Mr. Sadness and Lucy were snuggled together on the bed one night this week, kind of like the cats above. It may never happen again, should have had the camera by the bed. It was very sweet.
I wouldn’t have posted it except that the cats’ human promised us that it was all fake.
Good advice! No bones to kitties, anytime, anywhere.
Well, of course it is fake, but even still, I could not help but imagine the terror of it, in my little cat mind. And it is little, but still super scarey.
Yes
Have things needing done, thanks for good company. Have a good day.
Neko would never let go of me but dig her claws in, through my jumpsuit, though my skin and wouldn’t stop till they reached my bones!
Peg, I have OmAli’s email if you still need it. I thought it might be good to donate to Jubilee, and I suggested that to her in an email a couple of days ago. But Yves Smith at Naked Capitalism has several caveats, including potential tax issues (for the recipient, not for those who donate) so we might want to proceed carefully with that.
YGM, btw.
Do you have the link? I did already send them a check.
I forgot a cat story. I dreamed I was able to pick up Miss Sissy, and she liked it, we snuggled. I told my neighbor about it. Her response, “Dream on.”
Occupy Wall Street’s Debt Jubilee: A Gimmick with Tax Risk
That’s going into Friday’s Over Easy post, since we were discussing it last Friday.
I had some trouble with the direct link, just FYI, but my computer has been having a lot of re-direct issues again, at FDL, so maybe it is that. At any rate, I did read the post and some of the comments, and I still think it is worthwhile to support the Jubilee, with the expectation that there will be other avenues that the movement can use if the current strategy has issues.
Others may disagree, of course.
Donations could be made to the sanctuary that took the ferals.
When you are having the re-direct issues, clear the cache on your browser and that should clear the problem up for at least a while
It didn’t work for me either. Maybe I munged up the link. Here’s the raw one:
http://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2012/11/occupy-wall-streets-debt-jubilee-a-gimmick-with-tax-risk.html
OK I see the problem with the link. Occasionally, despite my carefulness, FDL’s link tool appends the link to this diary in front of the link I’m using. I’ve tried to get into the habit of checking, but apparently I didn’t. Sorry.
Somewhere in OmAli’s posts she had links to Georgeann’s rescue place, because I looked it up at the time.
Many thanks for the great pictures…though at a distance, I still think the warmth and hugs lower my blood pressure. So cute they are.
Did Georgeann take the ferals? I have been thinking about them as I have my own ferals (see the “dream on” reference above, lol), and I know it is hard to place cats that will not be touched. I love mine desperately, and it makes no difference to them.
I will also be happy to send her a direct contribution.
I hate heights. Doesn’t matter if they aren’t real. help. :)
The tax issues are easily dealt with according to attorneys I know. Cindy and Masaccio (the latter of whom deals a lot with financial issues) have confirmed that this is not a big deal at all. Here are Cindy’s comments:
The Rolling Jubilee website is here: http://rollingjubilee.org/
She did. OmAli said after the initial care and relocation of all the kitties, the funds went to Georgeann’s shelter. Of course any shelter would always welcome more.
I left this comment at Yves’ place:
Thanks. :)
I haven’t heard from OmAli for a few days, but I’m pretty sure Georgeann was going to take all of the kittehs and find homes for them and keep the ferals. There were a couple of potential homes for a couple of the cats.
Thanks, Phoenix Woman. I don’t know much about taxes, but I did notice Yves’s concerns and thought they would be worth being aware of.
Good to hear. I am trying to think about my group and wonder how many of them would pine for each other if they were broken up into smaller or single units. I think they would adapt, but knowing how hard it is to adopt out older and especially feral cats, that is something to worry about. So thank goodness for our community, being able to take them in and not be concerned for those issues, that is Awesome. Thanks so much to Georgeann, if she stops in here. And thanks to Om for being the conduit for it all.
Cats are nothing if not adaptable. It’s almost never pretty though. Kuroneko herself spent two days in a pocket of my travel bag when she first came home. After I gently removed her, she began to warm up to her surroundings, (and me), pretty quickly.
Morning FireKittehs:
Maestro is helping me do a few light chores around the house (strictly in a supervisory capacity, of course), while Diva is taking her obligatory, mid-morning snoozer. When she awakens, I’m certain she will be kitteh-cajoling me to break out the Beach Party Treats. She can be quite insistent in these matters, and who am I to argue? After all, it’s her world, I’m just living in it.
Indeed. Aren’t we all?
Good Afternoon people,
Mcat was roaming the streets of a large city after being abandoned or lost and then delivered to a shelter. She was adopted by a college student, then giving to an elderly lady who had a stroke 6 years ago and she ended up with us. I wonder if there is a memory associated with the street wandering without a particular human to boss around. M doesn’t wander out of sight of the house and her food source. I think with the proper attention and care any kittehs will be pretty adaptable and adoptable.
Spent part of the morning modifying a slide out breadboard in my ancient kitchen cabinets to be sturdy enough to attach one of the two old cast steel food processors I have. dakine01 linked to a delicious looking cranberry relish @ PUAC yesterday. Bought the ingredients while doing my TG food shopping this morning.
I also have some frozen meat to add to Mcat’s diet that I’ll be more easily be able to process into burger texture.
Morning, people of the cat.
Sorry not to have given an update in the past couple of days. We have had a great response with donations, thanks so much to everyone who helped and sent good wishes. I’m waiting to disburse funds until we have the date that Georgeann is going to pick up the kittehs, and until we have all the expenses from Nancy and Joe. I think we will have enough collected to cover those, but I have a special request that I’d like to make, if anyone is still considering making a donation.
You can email me at omali8640 at gmail dot com, and I’ll run it by you.
Some really great news! Mojo has been adopted by a single older man with one cat, Baxter, and Nancy says it is going to be perfect! Good luck, Mojo!
Hello stranger,
I trust you two new kittens are doing OK after their vet visit.
That’s the email I used Om but for some reason it came back as undeliverable and I’ve been too busy lately to remember to follow up. I’ll try it again.
Hi nonqui,
Yes, they are fine thanks, sleeping a lot, actually, which is nice because I was really knocked down by that virus and appreciated being able to rest.
I’ll stick around and give you another if that doesn’t work.
Okay Om. YGM, (hopefully).
That’s great news about Mojo. :)
You won’t go wrong with that Cranberry Relish believe me. The only reason I’m not making it for T’giving is I don’t have a food processor to use at the moment.
Make it the night before so all the ingredients get a chance to mellow out together.
Good morning, Cat people!
Good morning, OmAli! I’ve been worried about you. Are you all well?
It’s good news about Mojo. I hope he won’t miss his housemates. I still worry about them all, but accept that we’ve done what we can from our distances.
Blessings on you for being the collector and conduit.
Morning all.
I have tentative plans to fly to Tampa to retrieve Nagi for relocation in my fambly with Abner and Gracie. Southwest lets cats fly in the cabin with their hoomin! If anyone still has donations in mind to relocate Richard’s cats, Om and I have discussed the possibility of a contribution through her PayPal setup for Nagi’s relocation specifically. The cost is around $450 for the tickets. Mr. has pledged Nagi as my Christmas present this year and I have another friend here who has offered financial help. If anyone wants to help with Nagi specifically, let me know.
BTW, Richard’s vet tech friend called Nagi “Hollywood Nagi”. Heehee.
Yay! That’s so wonderful of you and Mr yellowsnapdragon.
YSP!!!! that is SO WONDERFUL!!!! I love that you’re going to bring Nagi home.
Have you already made the arrangements with the current caretakers?
I would be glad to donate for your ticket.
I was trying to figure out something similar myself, but it seemed the people on the ground didn’t want that.
I tell myself that my kittehs are having enough trouble adjusting to BigBoy, that perhaps it isn’t a good idea. If they’re amenable to the idea, though, I’d rethink it.
So, Om was that the idea you mentioned? I don’t see any email in my box; should I send you a specific message?
I’ve been focused on myself, getting a practice of my own up and running, so that has distracted me from the kittehs a bit this week.
Not “yerNagi?” I guess flying cats is kind of Hollywood, and sure is better than skydiving cats, methinks. Good to hear the news, SD would smile at it.
Hi ysd! That was going to be my email update :)
I was looking back over past Caturdays, and there were so many ‘your buddy Nagi’ stories that SD related. I know he would want the two of you to be together. Nancy feels that way, too.
So, shoot me an email if you are interested, and I’ll send you the PayPal link and my mailing address. Omali8640 at gmail.com
You guys are da best!
Ah, I see your response at 50. Ok, count me in.
Does anyone know which are counted as ferals? Sweet Pea is being included in the rehoming, right? She was the outdoor feral whom Richard was gentling down, but hadn’t been able to bring inside, iirc.
I’ve made tentative arrangements with Richard’s friend, but the ticket hasn’t been confirmed yet. December 8 is the date of retrieval. Southwest has some *really* good online only fares. Unfortunately, SW doesn’t have a flight schedule that allows me to SFO and return on the same day, so it looks like I’ll have to do a red eye on Friday night and have a lengthy layover on Saturday before the cheap flight home. Red eye flight is more expensive.
I should mention that the last work trip I took, to Dallas, there were actually two small dogs in soft carriers in the security line at Love Field. Not sure I’d ever seen animals before.
I was thinking of trying to go to Tampa at the time, and when I saw that the dogs had to be removed from the carriers to go through security (I saw them on their people’s laps on the other side of the scanner), that got me to worrying about how a cat would react.
let alone one that didn’t really know me. Sigh.
So, a word to the wise, Ysp; better put Nagi in a harness so you can keep a grip on him at the security checkpoint.
I always recall my brief time as an airline reservation taker; pretty much all of them, at the time, only allowed one animal per cabin, and it was first-come-first-rides, leaving the second one to go in the cargo hold, after all. That always bothered the heck out of me.
Oooh, the “redeye”…no wonder they’re calling Nagi “Hollywood.” I’ve ;only ever heard about redeyes in the movies or tv shows. ; )
December 8th. Woohoo! Good for you and mr ysp, and Joe and Nancy, too. Lucky Nagi.
Hope Abner and Gracie welcome him. Do you have high kitchen cupboards for him to hide out on top of?
Thanks,
I have the exact Universal #2 grinder (concave and convex chopper teeth), and a #1, flat plate chopper including a fine and course grain mill reversible plate. Awesome little machines. I always get gifts of venison from relatives who have extra. Mcat gets a healthy diet here.
The food processors show up regularly at thrift shops. These were unused in the boxes hand stamped 1958 and 1961. Harder to find are ones with several different chopper plates.
Me too. But just about everybody who I told about the adventure has thought I was stark raving mad. I am a bit concerned about having two tomcats in da house. Abner adjusted well to Gracie’s arrival, but he does not care for ballsy neighbor Tom at all. Nagi will spend the first few days in our bedroom sniffing the others through the door. I’ll feed everyone noon opposite sides of the door to introduce positive experiences with each other.
Yay! Got the email through this time. Since the other expenses seem to be taken care of, I’ll kick in for ysd to go get Nagi. I can contribute more to the shelter by Wednesday afternoon.
Perfect. That’s the approved way to introduce.
But surely, Nagi is not a “tomcat?” Richard always neutered and spayed his kittehs, if they were not already when they came to him.
Neutered males usually don’t have such issues with each other. At least, much less. I suspect part of Smokey’s peeing has to do with the disturbance of Big Boy in the house, but only part. He started it long before BB started hanging out.
Southwest requires a reservation for pets. The ticket agent was a cat person himself and told me that he hasn’t seen a lot of problems with booking pets. Not enough of them fly, I guess. Will do a harness. Great suggestion.
Abner is neutered, though, and he does have issues with ballsy neighbor Tom.
Oh, good, that your booking agent was reassuring. I hope the rules have changed since my time anyway. Always thought one -per-cabin was unreasonable.
Re: the neutering, I meant both need to be neutered to prevent issues. If neighbor is intact, that would hype it up. Of course if neighbor is invading Abner’s territory he’d object anyway, right?
I do so hope they get along.
Thanks, Margaret! It means a lot to me.
ysd, have you and Nancy discussed airline approved cat carriers?
Well, so glad to hear the good news. Om, ysp, I’ll get a donation off this afternoon. If I can’t take a kitteh myself, I can at least help Nagi find his forever home.
Got to go do my Sunday shopping. And//uh-oh, Smokey’s wandering about testing new high places, some of which are already occupied by stuff….better go follow him.
I’ll be back later. So glad to see some good things happening. And Om, so glad you’re better.
(((tejana)))
Thank you!!!
Okey doke…donation for Nagi complete. Will make a donation to the general fund Wednesday. Thanks again Om and yellowsnapdragon.
This community is teh awesome and it makes me so happy and proud to be a part of it. Thank you all.
I have not discussed it with Nancy but the SW ticket agent gave me dimensions for approved soft carriers. SW sells them on site, so I figured I’d probably buy one at the airport to make sure it is acceptable for flying.
Wow. You guys are the best. So happy to hear all the good news about SD’s tribe. And Nagi!!!! That is so cool, ysd!!!! Sending calm, confident vibes to all the kittehs.
Thanks Margaret for posting, today.
Mcat absolutely wanted to walk all the way across the yard to check out a strange vehicle in her “territory.” A neighbor has permission to deer hunt on my landlord’s property and parks so we know when they are here. I tried tying ablaze orange handkerchief size piece of fabric around her mid-section before letting her outside, but she was having nothing to do with that. Would have made a cute picture. She wandered, stalked a few noises and hunted in the mowed lawn out by the garden while I attended to cutting out the dead asparagus ferns, fed, composted and mulched the bed for spring. Lovely day here.
I’m glad Mcat wasn’t taken for a deer or something!
I was out there too, wearing my orange, but the neighbors are sensible and trusted. I would certainly have asked for some of whatever they were smoking, if they thought this cat resembled an agile deer. This is normal life in the boonies. Hunting is something which that crowd of people cherish, not so much for the kill as for some primal need to have/be in control of anything at all, in their lives, these days. M (kept me in sight) was on my heels heading back to the house as it might have been getting close to supper and a fresh portion of seafood pate’.
So tell me, is Mcat pronounced “Em cat” or “M’cat”?
Good question. BTW, we need some recommends. We are waaay down the list, at least at this computer.
Yep. We started off strong this morning but traffic died out and hasn’t come back.
I suspect everyone is busy with weekend-before-Thanksgiving errands and chores, as I have been. Plus I got in a bike ride.
I would expect overall traffic to be down just in general this week.
M is an alias, first letter of her name. ;-)
Have to protect her identity. Too many people who might guess my alias locally, where everybody knows everybody and anonymity is scarce on this island.
Just read back over the thread and the good news about Nagi. I hope YSD will post a photo when Nagi arrives and gets settled in.
Richard is smiling, I can just feel it!!
I see. How cloak and dagger… ;)
About to get on my bike right now…Since it’s dark, it will be the stationary one.
Margaret,
In your post on top, I am confused a bit about the electric furnace you mentioned. I know of electric baseboard heaters and portable electric space heaters that one can purchase at any home store, but electric furnace is new to me. If it was wired into your apartment as a primary heat source, they are expensive to operate but likely met some building code, with required licensed personnel for installation and nothing to worry about.
Yes to all of that. It’s an apartment furnace and I know it has a limit switch and all of the safety stuff but I’m a worrier when it comes to my sweet kitten.
(shhh. Don’t tell her I called her sweet or kitten!)
As I suspected, I don’t like leaving M home alone either. I am quite sure she is up most of the night in the heated laundry room, but mice can get up from the cellar in that room and that room only in this old farm house. Awake at night to protect us (and her kibble) and she sleeps all day. Have a nice week, thanks again.
I had electric heat in my house in Cincinnati, but it probably wasn’t what you were picturing. Mine was a regular furnace, and used the condenser unit outside to draw warm air in, and reversed the process in the summer with the central air conditioner to exhaust warm air out. If there wasn’t enough warmth in the outside air, a supplemental heating unit in the furnace came on.
Hey,Peg, here’s a thank you for hosting today.
I’m sure the analyses above for today’s low traffic are right. I was at the grocery store this evening about dusk, and the place was jumping. You and I are abstaining from holiday frenzy this year, but I bet it’s keeping others very busy.
I meant to go to a concert tonight, but got home kinda late to go, and thinking of how hard it is to find a close parking spot, talked myself out of it. Watching “The Dust Bowl” with kittehs on lap.
Weird that it’s so familiar…the couple of years I spent in OK I learned a lot about this history; the County Fair always had a big exhibit on the history, and how OK farmers learned from it. A friend’s dad was the elected county head of the Conservation organizaiton (can’t remember what it’s called) of farmers.
Have tasks to do, too, which are not getting done, somehow.
Hope you have a good week. Good wishes for everyone and their animals.
Maybe light traffic, but I was surely glad for this safe place to check in when so much other news seems yukky. Hoping a good week for all.
If anyone recalls….I was trying to do a bit of reflection, and I wonder when it was that SD left home to go to the VA. Does someone know that date? Thanks.
Hey guys, I wasn’t lamenting the lack of traffic. This place is just a relaxed, kicked back, come and go as you please place.
Thank you all for stopping in and a special thanks to OmAli for stopping by with the info I asked for and to our yellowsnapdragon for stepping up for Nagi. A congratulations goes out to Mojo for finding a two legged to love. I hope everybody has a great week. Happy and safe Thanksgiving to all. Once again, I hope everybody can set aside some special time to be with our special friends. They give us so much and all they ask for is a safe place in our homes and in our hearts.
Goodnight. :)
Rev Bev, I think it was Oct. 6; that was a Saturday. If you look up his name here, his last post was the 5th.
Yeah, that’s the date I’m thinking too. It was so sudden. Still makes me cry.
Me, too. Still stunned. Pulled up his picture there…and, well, deep down, still don’t believe it.
Well. We are doing what we can, at least, to see that his furry loved ones are cared for.
Margaret, thanks for the postnhost. Good to see all today and good news of SD’s cats.
I did finally get a couple of photos of Adorable Boy today, will try to put one up next time. He is one of the two kittens that were born at the feral colony I feed.
And by the way, I am totally busted on giving up the ID of Mr. Sadness. I am pretty sure there is no other cat with that name, so if you live near me, yeah, that’s my boy. Sorry Mister, you have been outed.
Thanks for the information….yes, peace to all the spirits that hurt and miss our SD. He had been a part of our morning for a long time. In so many ways he is still with us.
