As we posted here eighteen journalists were murdered in Irak last year. They were guilty of the crime of being journalists.
For those of you who don’t read Arabic I’ll translate:
- Baghdad: Seven journalists murdered.
- Mosul: Five journalists murdered.
- Kurdistan Regional Government: Two Journalists murdered.
- Basrah: One journalist murdered.
- Salah al-Din: One journalist murdered.
- Diyala: One journalist murdered.
- Kirkuk: One journalist murdered.

18 in 2008. And two last week. Iraq is the deadliest place for journalists, for the sixth year in a row. Fitting news on this, the sixth anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq.
Thank you, Mark.
Dugg.
Thanks 4 opening the digg.
Thanks mfi.
Thank you, mfi. The corporate media may say we’ve forgotten about Irak but many of us know better.
Oh I rather suspect that those who have “forgotten” are about to be reminded.
Laura yes, we haven’t forgotten that disgraceful anniversary. I wouldn’t say there’s been much improvement for journalists. Particularly not in Iraki Kurdistan. In the first two months of 2009 [link is to Arabic language report] there have been:
* 9 cases of persecution of journalists recorded in the city of Sulaimaniyah,
* 7 cases were recorded in Arbil,
* 4 cases in Dohuk.
